    since 2016, I've relentlessly sought an opportunity to make my mark with Epic, but luck has yet to favor me. However, I anticipate a positive shift soon as I intensify my skills in IT and programming. Armed with over 20 years of pharmacy expertise, I currently hold pivotal roles at the largest city hospital: Controlled Substance Analyst, Investigational Pharmacy Manager, Supply Chain Analyst, and, presently, EPIC Final Approver and Sr. Data Analyst.

    So I'm applying to a job in the health care system in NYC. and the job requires to be EPIC certified but you cannot be certified unless you had worked for another healthcare system that provided that to you or EPIC itself. so in other words these jobs are not for you, they are for already EPIC certified people, and just like that, equal employment opportunities are legit non-existent. This is like saying hey! you need a dish to get food but you can only get a dish if you got food??? wtf???

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  4 года назад

      Hi Danny, it depends on the position. I have many colleagues, including myself, that have applied to positions that required Epic certifications, but did not have Epic certifications before getting hired. During the meaningful use era, it was common for employers to put jobs out that requires Epic certifications, because you're not allowed to work on Epic if you don't have one, but will add an additional comment about how they will train you within the first few months. Those positions are not as common now. The path that I see that is more common, is applying to a non-Epic position, getting hired, and transitioning into an informatics position from within the organization.

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  4 года назад

      Hi Emile - that's a great question, but I may not have the best insight into that question. Anecdotally, I've met a few individuals that have applied to contracting positions for at-the-elbow support for Epic positions during a Epic go-live and learn on the spot. It's usually contract positions that can be as short as a day and last up to 1-2 weeks. However, those same individuals have told me the opportunities are rare and they only land a handful a year (~

    I work in patient access in a hospital that uses Epic. I use Epic on the daily. Do I have a good chance of my supervisor sponsoring me to get the training?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  9 месяцев назад

      That's a good question and not sure how helpful my response would be. However, I tend to see individuals that are most likely candidates for opportunities like that are those that not only use the system, but are also 'super users' or 'experts' of it that they end up helping their colleagues to use it better. Or help brainstorm ways to optimize its use. If you fall into that category, that probably gives you a good chance. Also, you should bring it up to your supervisor if that's part of your goal!

    Hi Brian! I am transitioning from a Respiratory Therapist to an Epic Optime analyst for the hospital system I work at. Do you know what the average pay range for a brand new optime analyst would look like. I am having a hard time finding a good pay range for this position online. I am not certified they are sending me to Epic to get the certification which is all virtual now I guess thanks to covid.

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Год назад

      Hi Chelsie - I hope this comment isn't too delayed. Congrats on making the transition and I hope it's everything you're looking for and more. As for the average pay range, it's quite difficult to answer since there's a lot of variance for geography and even past experience.
      I looked at glassdoor for a general Epic analyst (www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/epic-analyst-salary-SRCH_KO0,12.htm) and they estimate 84.7k, which, I would have guessed around too. I'd think their range of 67k to 108k is more or less accurate too, but I would have guessed the max to be higher around 125k for the HCOL areas.
      Good luck on your Epic cert journey!

      Hi Victor - that is a very difficult question because I'm unsure of what your job responsibilities are. @Just_Liz_Here 5 лет назад

      The test when you first go with them. 😄

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  5 лет назад +1

      sorry, i'm a bit confused. Can you define what is "first go with them"? There's two 'initial' tests I can think of. One is when you want to be an Epic analyst/consultant and not already working with an Epic institution - that test is called the sphynx test and you can only take it once. I'm not familiar with that test since I didn't go down that path. The tests I was referring to in the video are when you are already employed by an Epic institution and you are going for certification training. There's usually, at minimum, 1 test for each application and the 'initial' test is usually application fundamentals. Based on your question, I'm assuming you're referring to the sphynx test - which I don't have much information on unfortunately. I've heard it can be a bit difficult though: engagemehit.blogspot.com/2015/08/jumping-through-hoops-interview-process.html

      The test you are given when your employer is going with Epic. Does that help?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  5 лет назад +3

      I think so, I'm fairly certain it's the sphynx test now and the one I'm not familiar with. I think this may be some helpful read: www.reddit.com/r/healthIT/comments/4kagpz/epic_assessment/
      I also work closely with a few Epic folks. I'll ask them when I'm back in office on Monday and see what I find out. Are you taking yours soon?

  • @richardlowell4116

    Brian, what do you think of a retail pharmD working for Epic as a means to get a certification? Which app do you see being the most in demand in the next 10 years?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  4 года назад +1

      Your first question is a bit difficult to answer as it's a bit ambiguous. My first thought would be that it's great to have retail PharmDs working for Epic to get certifications as I am a huge fan of individuals coming into the informatics space that have work experience. I personally have little experience in retail and struggle a bit with the retail/amb build in Epic as it's a bit more foreign to me. I'm not sure if this was the direction of your original question, but that's the first thought that comes to mind.
      To your second question about demand, I think the app with the highest demand will be in their reporting applications (Epic has a few) as the volume of data will grow even larger than it is now with supportive legislation (21st Century Cures) that have recently been finalized by the two historic CMS & ONC rules in March of this year. Granted, data provenance are issues that need be addressed and both the demand and importance of core applications like Epic's pharmacy, inpatient orders, & clinical documentation will always be needed.

    I need Help in Epic. Is there any training I can take outside the hospital I work?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Год назад

      Sorry to hear that. Epic isn't the most intuitive at times, but also usually depends on the individuals that implemented it since it differs by instance. If you're trying to learn more about Epic, be it as an end user or an Epic analyst, I'd suggest going to their epic userweb and reviewing the forums or training materials. Subsequently, I'd encourage you to reach out to your hospital's epic team to inquire about trainings since your hospital will have customized the Epic environment. They should have some time of training and/or resources that can help you there. Good luck!

      Hey S Paul! All of the assessments (exam, quiz, project, homework) are all open book. While your ability to quickly ctrl+f can make a huge difference, the way they ask the questions isn't always straight forward - you'll definitely want to review before taking the test. The class structure is a mix of lecture, individual exercises, projects, and office hours. There is a lot of interaction with the teachers. Classes are typically 3-4 days at Epic. You'll do your project and exams back at your own institution though. They have a pretty unique campus and quite fun to explore - I enjoyed my time there.

      It depends. The in-person training sessions, which are required for 'being certified', are live classes over a span of a few days and sometimes months. You'll take exams (usually 1-2) during that duration. The 'being proficient', entails self-study vs. live classes. It also has the same exams you'll schedule just like the 'being certified' pathway.

Also, the pass percentage depends on the Epic certification you pursue - it's different across the different certification exams. I also don't know the pass percentages for all the Epic certifications, but I am aware that the Willow Inpatient certification is around 55-60%

    Hi Brian,
    I am a senior nurse here in the UK and we are currently changing our system to EPIC this year. My hospital is looking for a principal trainer. My company will also sponsor the certification in the US. I already have some experience from my previous job as an information system trainer (iHIMS) so I have an advantage to this post however, I am thinking what will my qualifications as an EPIC Principal trainer lead me to? I am thinking of working my way to health informatics but I am not sure if there is a career progression in this area. Is is profitable to be EPIC certified or should I stick to nursing and progress to managerial roles? thanks - Andy

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  3 года назад +1

      Hi Andy. This is likely a question that I cannot answer in full as I lack knowledge of the compensation structures for two things: the UK and nurses. With that disclaimer, here are some comments: 1) It's not uncommon that individuals transition out of a trainer role into a builder role. Usually individuals that already have a clinical background (e.g. nurse or pharmacist) and are training the application they would be building in. For example, many of my pharmacy friends that started with training would transition to Willow analysts after a few years. It doesn't always happen and the pay differential can be drastic - so, something to consider. 2) Epic certifications are probably less valuable then they were before, especially in the US, as most implementations have already been done in the US and there are already MANY individuals with Epic certifications. Thus, the demand is a lot lower because the supply is higher. That isn't true in the UK though since, last I recalled, you guys were still undergoing a lot of Epic implementations. The only thing here is that I've always considered medical professions in the UK to be paid significantly less than the US so I'm not sure if it'll be more or less profitable going down the traditional nursing routes towards managerial roles. 3) Personally, the market is hot in technology and I'd think anything + tech would make you more valuable. Be sure to chat with some folks in the UK to get their thoughts too!

    Epic certification exams are open book and open environment. These exams are not hard at all if you actually study. I have dealt with an Epic consultant that's hired by Nordic. She's certified in several modules, but she's CLUELESS about some basic features that a certified Epic consultant should know. I had to terminate her assignment immediately. I never understand why Epic's certification exams are OPEN BOOK. No wonder some certified Epic consultants have no clue what they're saying without a reference book in front of them.

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  4 года назад

      Hey David - I certainly agree. Ironically, I failed my first Epic recertification exam a few weeks ago for reporting. I didn't study and finished the 1.5 hour exam in 15 minutes - so completely my fault. In regards to your comment about Epic consultants, I don't have the best impression either. To be honest, being certified in Epic doesn't mean much either as it's not difficult to ctrl+F for answers. It's just a way to help employers weed out candidates easier as opposed to someone with zero Epic experience. I can usually tell if someone actually knows what they are doing during the interview process as I ask very specific questions about certain workflows and/or functionalities.

Last I checked, it’s like a ~65% passing rate. I have a bit of a computer programming background, but I’m primarily trained in pharmacy. I did chronicles install utilities and moved onto chronicles database programming and found it a bit challenging. So, my vote would probably go towards that :). A few of my pure IT/CS colleagues thought it was challenging too, but I’m sure they’d do better in that then the clinical applications

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  4 года назад

      Hi Lady - it can be! It really depends on the position. When we hire individuals, we typically look to see if they match the specific job responsibilities. If their CV aligns, then whether they have the degree or not, it won't matter. Further, it's usually the interview that we do the weeding out. A degree won't make a huge difference if you do poorly on the interview.
      With that said, I find that candidates that have a health informatics or information management degree do fairly well on the interviews :)

The tests for ALL epic certificates are through Epic, so Epic is the authority that gives them out. If you work for a university that has Epic, especially if you’re in an informatics role, you can likely access Epic materials, be proctored by your university, and if you pass, get certified by Epic. As a student, it likely depends on your specific program and university. You’ll have to ask your program coordinator if it’s possible because they control the process by which you take the exams. It’s rare to see students with epic certifications, but the ones that have it, were usually sponsored by their programs. So - very program specific. Hope that helps
