When Aeration Is Not Enough To Stop Algae

  • Pond aeration can often have a dramatic effect on algae blooms. Increasing oxygen throughout the pond body supports some very important processes that actually help to clean and balance the pond of excessive nutrients.
Aeration can also slow the aging of a pond down. By aging, I mean the gradual filling in of organic build up and debris. As years go by, this "compost" build up simply fuels more algae and weed growth.
Aeration coupled with some beneficial bacteria supplementation is a great, natural, targeted way, to slow this entire process down.
But there will usually come a time when the build up becomes signficant enough, that dredging should be considered as the best way to reclaim and restore the pond.
In this city pond, that's exactly where we are at. Over the spring and summer months they have applied algaecides a few times, only to have the algae roaring back worse than before. And when this happens, it's a good time to make a fresh start and clean it out.
The moral of the story? Aeration is a great foundational tool for pond management, but it isn't the silver bullet solution for an aging pond, once it gets to a certain point.

Hello, great series of videos. I see you promote aeration a lot. What's your opinion on offering pond aeration as part of scheduled maintenance service? A couple hours a day once a month? Will that help at all? Not all the properties can offer a decent aeration system but they can afford a monthly service. TIA

Hi Julian...thanks for the kind words. I am indeed a big proponent of aeration. But to work well it needs to be used as much as possible...24/7 operation is best. So a couple hours a day...once a month, won't really make much of a positive difference I'm afraid. Its the consistency of use that makes a big difference. Thanks again for the question.
