    What’s so crazy to me about them is it’s essentially a tight drummer playing simple lines (in very, very good time), a tight bassist doing a mellow but groovy line, and a guitarist with a ton of reverb playing melodic lines combined with triads and leaving space in his playing. It’s so simple on paper but so fresh.
    Goes to show when you think everything in music has been done someone comes along and can have a simple yet great musical concept you’d never thought of before them. Awesome band.

      You know, she's actually really good too; they all are, but I mean her bass lines are TASTY! Really great choices of melodies and riffs. I heard an interview with them and she was completely new to the instrument when they started, one of those "I went a bought a bass because a wanted to learn to play..." types of things. Their minimalism, both in terms of gear and music, is inspiring. They really embody the old "it's the notes you don't play that matter" mantra. DJ and Leezy just lock in tighter than anybody in the business and Mark floats on top, it's fantastic. Mark's guitar is a basic MIM 70s reissue with upgraded pickups and Graphtec nut/saddles. Leezy's got an SX(!) with DiMarzio pickups. DJ plays a minimal four-piece kit. No crutches, no cheats. My absolute favorite thing about Speer's playing is that he really doesn't rely on blues or classic rock tropes. As you note, he's outlining the chords and exploring the whole scale, not merely wheedling away aimlessly on pentatonic scales, which a lot of rock guitarists never graduate from. He gets inside the song and walks around. Super rare to be simultaneously innovative and also just really nice to listen to.

      Triads are your friend, get to know them well. And once you've found a triad- say you find an Em7th you like- now find the position of the E minor scale that's close enough to where that chord is you can devise a line which ends on the same note that's defining that triad. For instance- if it's a minor triad, find the flat third and end the phrase on that note- if it's a 7th then find that note, a major- find the perfect 5th and 3rd- etc. It sounds very melodic because you're outlining the chords with your lead line.

She focuses on the I note. Since he knows the I will always be there, doesn't have to focus on playing it.
    He said he plays flatwound strings so he never has to change them -- which means they always sound the same. That, and using the same pick for months at a time. It's pretty amazing.

    I'm so glad he's finally getting recognized as the modern guitar hero he truly is. His live sound was hands down the most perfect and beautiful guitar tone I heard in my life. His improvisation is where the genius really is. It's never the same thing twice and it's always super well executed and tasty.

    Glad you are promoting them! I discovered them listening to NPR a couple years back and had the pleasure of seeing them live recently. As much as it is about Mark's drippy melodies, the rhythm section is KILLER and key to their groove. It's not often these days that a group comes up with such a signature sound.

    Love this band. I discovered them while walking through a festival several years ago and their sound stopped me in my tracks and made me listen. Little did I know they would blow up within a couple years, work with Jay Z, etc. I would love if they did an album with more vocals, but the guitar player is a very melodic player so that's certainly not necessary.
    I've been trying to figure out August 10 by ear and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite tunes just to whip out when I want to just play something.

    Thanks for a great feature on Khruangbin... they're now at the top of my new music list. I was particularly happy to hear you mention their Midde Eastern and African influences. From almost the moment you started playing them, I was reminded of Ali Farka Touré. While we're on the topic, I'd love to hear your thoughts on his music and style. He has an instrumental voice and melodic sense that seems to stretch beyond much of what I've heard in American blues and jazz over the last few decades. Thanks for yet another great video!

    Glad you picked up on Khraungbin. I've learned many of their songs on guitar. A hint on the song August 10. It's 82 bpm and Mark bounces his triads off this reggae type groove. Also, after each lead line he bounces back to the A and D triad. I have a video here on RUclips showing if you want to watch.

    I totally flipped over Khruangbin and binged on everything they had on youtube. Mark Speer captured my ears with his lush guitar playing. Laura Lee (Leezy) invented a new style of feminine campy stage outfits while playing infectious grooves. DJ (the clock) has a universe of nuances in his drumming. Then after a year of Khruangbin mania the pandemic lull sort of dulled my cult fascination. The shine left for me... and the sameness sunk in.

    • @nomadman123
      @nomadman123 Год назад +2

      Yeah, you can’t listen to them over and over. It’s like some of the older jazz guys. Barney Kessel or Herb Ellis. I love their playing but every once in a while I’d think, “c’mon man, bend a string.” But I know it’s not them, it’s me.

    • @djtommykeys
      @djtommykeys Год назад

      @@nomadman123 you are so right because more often good jazz lays down a feel and tickles it slowly along making you beg for more action. Then when they let it rip you are so engrossed in the groove that you soar above it with them. Khruangbin leaves you dog paddling in the groove. It's a great groove but I can see in the comments here that I'm not alone wanting a little more rip. Maybe if I were younger and very stoned I wouldn't care.

    Mark has totally changed my approach to the guitar in so many ways. Huge fan of the sound and the influence. Ernest Ranglin is another fave that he mentioned on the KEXP set - incredibly different guitarist, but somehow that vibe carries over through Mark. I'm from SE TX and so happy there's a band like theirs from H-Town, an incredibly diverse city!
