Really good information. Sounds like if Oldsmobile had the time to make the DX blocks to begin with, we would be driving a lot more diesel cars here in the U.S. Similar situation with the early 6.0 powerstroke.

nothing sounds better than an Olds 5.7 diesel... Love the sound they make, especially when they are cold!!

Hey Freddy… this is Randy… from the Olds diesel channel….. thx soooo much for watching… yea you are right… when the Olds is cold… and when the fast idle solenoid has upped the idle… she sounds soooo good!!! That’s a very cold fuel knock… that is very loud and pronounced, unlike when the engine is at NOT..! Normal operating temperature! I have a passion for these cars.. and the 5.7L diesel, unlike all of the naysayers out there…. Most all of them that speak out against the Olds diesel, are ignorant in there limited knowledge of the engine and it’s background. I also have my hands on getting a couple of 4.3l V-6 olds diesel engines, and possibly a complete car with it in it!!! Can’t wait!!! I also have 2 complete engines on stands here, complete with pumps, the whole schmear! Soo happy to be able to find another person that enjoys these cars and engines like me! You can holler at me anytime my friend…. My number is 636-622-0016, I am in Moscow Mills, Missouri! I will always be ready to talk engines and the like. Have a good day… Randy Norris

Im 54 and been into Oldsmobiles for all these years. I was there and remember all the "problems" but also remember when they worked good they were great. A friends dad had a bare bones chevrolet company truck in 1982. When new that truck pulled hard for the times and would squeal the tires over a dip in the road taking off from stop sign. This was a time when 170hp was considered a performance engine, lol. A close relative had a used delta 88 and as a mechanic himself, once he did the fuel system and fixed some leaks that car shook down 33mpg in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. As a drag racer myself ive always wanted to do a 440 ci DX engine but finances never allowed it to happen...yet. In its place for now is a 620hp normally aspirated 455 on the stand for my '70 442. It made 620/610tq on the engine dyno in its current form. Life is definitely slowing down for me, with health problems and all. Im in the market for an efficient daily driver and really liking the idea of a mid 80s delta 88 with a 350 diesel done right. ARP studs, quality cylinder head work, ive even thought about running a stanadyne injector pump but not sure about that one yet.
I do have a question...what do you think about a more modern MLS (multi layered steel) head gaskets for the olds diesel? Im thinking they would be an upgrade with the proper deck and cyl head deck machining in lines per inch recommended for the MLS gaskets. With proper maintenance and injector pump timing i believe the upgrades should allow the engine to live many miles and years as a light footed old man behind the wheel around town. Im in Detroit, dealing with winter along with the rest of the rust belt. I imagine having a dedicated 119v ac plug for the vehicle where it will sit ought to keep down cold start wear and throw heat right away for a trip to the grocery store.
Let me know what you think of my thoughts or have anything to add.

Check and see if that manual mentions different size rod and main bearings from factory. My 82 red block 6.2 had some undersize bearings. My manual mentioned this at the time. Great content. I’ve had 2 82 red block trucks and now a 95 6.5 suburban. As a kid, the ol man Wilkens up the street drove a dark blue cadillac coupe whatever the slant backed one was and it had a 350 diesel. I’d follow it on my bike for the smell and loved how it sounded like grandpas tractors. Now I’ve been a Mack truck tech for 20 yrs and love old GM diesels. Yes I’m divorced. 😂

As always when something is rushed the early ones are problematic and people curse them for the rest of time. These engines, the Edsel, Ford Select O speed tractors, etc. people want perfection but a little tlc and time will get a solid piece of machinery! Thanks!👍

Good stuff. Nice to hear the accurate story come out about these engines. So many people are quick to bash with the wrong info. You might like to see the video I have of my 78 Silverado diesel on my channel with a DX block in it. Keep up the god work!
