  • This video is about finding out the lift force generated by NACA 2412 Airfoil using ANSYS Fluent workbench. The results from CFD are compared with the wind tunnel experimental data to calculate the error in the CFD results. This video serves as a tutorial to import Airfoil coordinates file to ANSYS and performing Meshing, Choosing Solver settings, generating lift force reports and pressure contours in ANSYS workbench.

    I think normally the Control Volume for external flow problems will be much larger as there will be wall effects like say for example, the most tested airfoil NACA 0012, for this CFD analysis, generally 20 times of the chord in all directions and a C domain will be used for analysis, this is applicable for every airfoil. The domain cannot be small as shown in the video.

      You are correct. The intention behind this video is to introduce the ANSYS Fluent workbench and solver settings. As you said, there are a lot of parameters which has to be optimized for accurate results such as
      1. Creating C shaped mesh
      2. Choosing proper element size based on grid independence test
      3. Selecting Domain dimensions based on wall effects
      4. Advanced mesh settings near the Airfoil wall such as inflation, mesh refinement, etc.
      5. Choosing correct solver settings based on flow geometry and the nature of the flow.
      And many more to discuss. We will discuss these aspects in detail in our upcoming videos. Thank you for showing interest.

    Here you have used Coupled Method, If you use SIMPLE Method u'll get the [ Lift Force - 35.814 N & Lift-Coefficient - 0.259 ] and which is more accurate values when we compare with experimental results, Because I have Performed the Simulation and i felt to comment, Hope! it Helps to others, if any mistake is there let me know

    Why do you uncheck pseudo transient exactly? And what about analysing the angle where the airfoil starts to stall?? I am trying to do that (w a proper mesh) and it is not converging

    Why meshing is taking so long?

      it usually does, from your question I can see that you are making the mesh fine for the whole domain, which would take time unless you have better computer specifications. But to overcome this, simulators generally isolate the fine mesh about the model being analyzed and leave the system with a much coarser mesh. Of course, this solution is applicable only for simulating applications similar to the video, in some cases, you have no other choice but to wait for it to mesh. I once did a piston combustion simulation and the mesh for it took 1 day. So yeah such is the case.
