  • Can a 17 Handicap golfer use blade irons, or should I stick with game improver irons?

I play only blades dating from the 1930s through to the 1980s, there's no secret art to using them.
Have you ever wondered how golfers got on before the manufacturers marketing departments suckered us all into believing that we couldn't play unless with GI or big cavity back irons?
Yes, EVERYONE used blades, from total beginners to professionals, they enjoyed their golf and the golfing world still rotated. 🙂
There's such a lot of rubbish written about how difficult a blade is to hit.

Thanks for watching and sharing. I understand where you're coming from, but I think it's fair to say that the additional forgiveness of modern game improving irons means that golfers will get better results from worse strikes compared to bladed clubs, whether new or old.
So I think what Sam highlights as the key to hitting blades is fair...a smaller sweet spot on a golf club is simply harder to hit...and if a golfer with slow swing speed is going to experience a far bigger drop off in performance when missing the sweet spot compared to one with a higher swing speed, then I think it's fair to say swing speed it the key to hitting blades...certainly one of the major factors, with the other being strike location and consistency.

Love the video mate, but you need to get that camera sorted as most of the video is blown out :(

Thanks Golf addict. Immediately after editing this video I invested in 2 new mics so I can have one on me and the guest!
This was a spur of the moment video, so wasn’t fully prepared with my set up. Shot it on my phone instead of my Sony ZV1, But decided to put it out anyway 👍

I am a 18 HCP player, I play with MizunoPro 243. Not a distance club, but giving me consistent carry distance and feel fantastic every time I hit - that's my way to enjoy golf.

love that mentality! Just because clubs are targeted at a certain handicap doesn't mean we have to follow suit! Do what makes the game enjoyable and gets you excited to play!

I own Mizuno Hotmetal irons. I also own Srixon ZX5's. The Srixons are in my bag! Not degrading Mizuno in any way, shape or form... But the Srixons are so much better!
This is my opinion, with my swing. To each their own!

Absolutely each swing to their own, but love to hear you’re getting on well with the ZX5’s…I’ve been looking at Srixons lately and a zx5 & 7 combo has caught my eye for sure!

Gents - love the content, but the sound quality … tough to understand.

Don’t worry. I’ve spent £320 on two new mics so the sound will be better next time 👍👍
