I believe Labyrinth Wall never left the field. I think it is immune to the effects of Polymerization but still allows the fusion summon to happen. So, it remains on the field but Wall Shadow is still fusion summoned. This would make the most sense since nothing actually seems to happen to the wall apart from Wall Shadow becoming part of it. It's also possible that Labyrinth Wall isn't even considered to be on the field or in the hand and the anime version of Polymerization works on monsters outside of the hand and field as long as they are in your possession and not in the deck or graveyard.
@@OmnicidalClown1992 Well, here's the thing. Burning Land in the anime doesn't just destroy any field spell. It destroys field spells susceptable to fire like the forest field. I think you misidentified the problem with Black Skull Dragon. It wasn't because it flies, it was because it was too big to fit in the narrow passageways. It couldn't fly over the maze because there was a ceiling, which I think is where your confusion was, but if you summoned, say, baby dragon, it could walk through just fine
Which makes the premise even more complicated these days with all the wacky size scaling of yugioh monsters. Legitimately difficult to work out the size of so many of them without comparing them to other monsters and locations across 2+ card arts where they both appear.
I think the narrow rule makes more sense considering that gate guardian was a large monster and he never entered the maze during the duel. he just sent out attacks like the water surge.
In the manga, they explain a couple of things that differ here. First, only monsters in Attack Position can enter the maze. I believe this rule wasn’t explicitly explained in the anime, but in practice, they never once have any Defense Position monsters in the maze at any point in the duel, even though it would’ve been highly advantageous to them, so it seems likely that this rule was still in place for the anime. IRL Labyrinth Duels are another story, of course. Second, regarding the “flying monsters cannot enter the maze” rule. Again, the manga explains this far better. Although from our point of view, the maze appears to have no ceiling, that is just for players’ convenience, and the Labyrinth Wall actually creates a barrier above the maze to prevent anyone climbing over the walls. It also prevents flying (or particularly large) monsters from entering the labyrinth. Moreover, this rule was explained before anyone actually played any cards barred from entering the labyrinth (Joey had just forgotten when he played his Red-Eyes Black Dragon, but Yugi did remember and still fused it with Summoned Skull to create Black Skull Dragon because of his strategy), and the rules were shown to affect the Paradox Brothers as well (Gate Guardian can’t travel through the maze either, and they were planning on summoning it at some point). So yeah, no shenanigans here.
My friends and i played D&D then i thought it would be cool to duel in the story. So i came up with Yugioh D&D i took a bit of inspiration from this duel moving your character token the amount squares with a 10 sided die. Its a board game version of yugioh playing survival duels against multiple opponents. You move around with a set field if you beat an enemy. You get battle rewards if you beat an enemy in the form of forbidden card and some Life Points. There are more rules but thats the basics
@@robrick9361 i know of it but rpg video games aren't really my thing. But my friends who played yugioh D&D did reference it and thought it was nice that it felt like that game
The only thing I can think of that is close to replicating this except of course building one yourself is Duelist of the Roses which have Labyrinth tiles where only certain monsters can pass like Wall Shadow. Alternatively you could use those wall tiles and just build your own labyrinth albeit limiting space.
Yugioh's alternative gameplay styles are one of my favorite aspects of the game, and the ParaDox duel is a big reason why. I have the duel on VHS still and that alone made me a fan of the series, only understanding the basics of the actual card game. I know later series would expand with turbo duels, actions duels, etc. and I appreciate that, but I felt they lacked the same variety Capsule Monsters, Dungeon Dice Monsters, and Labyrinth Duels brought to the table. I think there's been a failure to properly capitalize on alternative Yugioh, but I'm really glad a game like Cross Duel is getting made for a more "out there" way of playing the game.
honestly never put the two and two together that labyrinth duels were a precursor to dungeon dice monsters until you brought it up. loved the video as always
To me the rule about flying/floating monsters being a no-go makes sense. I personally imagined that there is a ceiling to the labyrinth, and in that case the corridors are probably too narrow to let most flying monsters open their wings properly. I donno, I didn’t find this rule too out-of-nowhere myself.
I like the creativitiy you can get of this duelling Style, but it is so difficult to play this in real Life. My Brother and I build a Pacour in the past and played with that rules. It was kinda strange and a total chaos but it was very funny.
I did wonder what cards like Satellite Cannon or Number 9: Dyson Sphere would be like in a labyrinth duel. Would they be allowed to attack through the maze's ceiling?
My best guess is that they'd be unable to attack anything since in-universe within the game the labyrinth is in an underground cave. Can't exactly hit the inside of a cave from space without completely destroying the planet right? Although Dsyson Sphere prpbably could since it's so big that it completely dwarfs a star
The no flying monster moving confuses me because by that logic, Dark Magician also shouldn't be able to move since he usually levitates above the ground rather then standing on it, same for Dark Magician Girl. Therefore, why aren't they considered flying monsters? Are only winged monsters considered flying monsters? And in that case, is it only winged monster with wings that look big enough to lift them or are any wings enough to consider it a flying monster? And also, why wouldn't a humanoid winged monster be able to travel by walking? They still have legs and if the argument of if you can explain it you can do it stands, it'd be pretty easy to explain why a monster like Harpy Lady may PREFER to fly, they are still capable of walking and therefore should be allowed to move.
The no flying prevents them from taking of, but they can move on their legs if they have them. Problem it's when the monster it's too big to fit and flying over it's his only option.
I feel like the „no flying monsters“ rule is explained in a strange way. It would make more sense to restrict level 9 and above monsters, since they are „too tall“ for the maze.
If you haven't already, could you try and analyze the rules of the ancient Egyptian 'Diaha' and/or the Shadow RPG from the Millenium World arc? I thought it was a really cool system, and I wish they'd elaborated on it a little more.
I remember when this episode came out. Me and my friends made a map of the labyrinth and used it to duel. We also played a game that was similar to Duelists of the Roses game but irl with the Yu-Gi-Oh tcg cards just played how the game was, so with deck masters, moving trap and spell cards, etc.
As much as we give OG Yugioh before the Battle City arc a LOT of crap, I will admit that OG had more unique sets of duels with the other season to do this being 5DS. That and it was a good duel to have Atem and Joey work together and the duel itself was fun. Nice look into the rules!
@@petercross1879 Look when I watched 5DS were I was younger, Turbo Duels, to me, felt very gimmicky like some of the OG Yugioh duels but I do know that they are normal duels in 5DS's world.

really wish yugioh continued to explore side games more often like they did in the first few seasons. I mean, newer series like 5ds would experiment with things like speed duels or duel links, but those were more like small alterations to the rules rather than something really different. And usually only had like 1 alternate play style per series.
we loved to play labyrinth when we were kids. Drew giant labyrinth maps on paper and spent weeks playing 4 player games there. refined the rules bit by bit to our liking.
I do really love this format. And I just love the animation for this duel, to see the more RPG like set up with Yugis warrior with Joeys are just such a cool sight. And here you would benefit from the horrible weak lv5 monsters they had in this era of Yugioh becuse they could move far.
I believe the reason that meeting the defense of the monster destroying it, is because in D&D you get to hit your target if your attack roll is equal to the target Armor Class (AC)
3:22 this will Surprise you..... Wall Shadow didn't become a Fusion in the TCG........ instead became an Effect Monster which can only be Summon IRONICALLY by Sacrificing Labyrinth Wall with Magical Labyrinth Equipped to Labyrinth Wall.... yeah like I said did NOT become a Fusion....
Something I thought about would be if you added Link monsters to this format, their arrows could point to the spaces in the maze, rather then monster zones when it comes to Link Arrows pointing at stuff.
So monsters can fuse with the walls to move anywhere they want, and monsters can dig under the maze to go where they want, yet flying was apparently the one that wasn't allowed? Ya that definitely felt like a bogus cheat rule to target Joey's dragon deck.
I always found flying monsters being unable to move at all to be a bizarre rule. Even as a kid I couldn't understand why Black Skull Dragon couldn't just fly low to the ground and move a square at a time like normal
I once tried to organize a tournament of my own that was inspired by this when I was a kid. I put up one crappy A4 flier in my local village's library (I live in a very rural area) and I believe one in my school. Only one kid showed up (who've I invited personally) and I was too lazy to get out of bed in order to play with him. That's when I learned that doing stuff is hard and requires a lot of work. Also, don't be like me and send your only guest away because you felt like sleeping for 10 more minutes.
Anybody remember duelist of the Roses. A lot of those vibes. It also had a "mana" system like hearthstone some 20 years earlier. Those first games that where more fantasy than cardgame were weird but fun.
Would you please cover duelist of the roses duels, or as I like to call them “Rose Duels”? It is similar to the grid based dueling of the labyrinth dual, I would be interested in seeing how they could be compared
Anyone else watch the TCG history series you can see that Takahashi likely drew some inspiration for this chapter in the manga from the Monster Collection TCG due to its mvmt mechanics. However it is substantially different
If anyone is interested, the "team" that Joey and Yugi's monsters form have some "standar" kind of characters on role plays (like dungeons and dragons), those being: the elf (Celtic Guardian), the barbarian (Axe Rider), the warrior (Flame Swordsman) and the mage (Dark Magician). Well, at least that's how i think it looks like.
I think the 'no fly' rule was there just so Para and Dox would be the only ones to circumvent the Labyrinth Duel rule. Wall Shadow and Dungeon Worm both can move around the labyrinth freely.
Ngl, i was hoping there'd be an archetype trivia on either the numbers, or the world chalice storyline (this is kinda long as it coveres 8 different archetypes & series)
Shadow Ghoul with Labyrinth Wall could easily make a pretty cool fusion monster in the real world. It could attract in defense position, and maybe something else too. I think I’d call it “Shadow Labyrinth”. :)
Because Heart of the Cards refused to give Yugi Giant Soldier of Stone to destroy the Labyrinth Wall even though its defense dwarfs the Giant's attack or Catapult Turtle to lob monsters at the wall, but that method would've destroyed Yugioh's life points so the King of Games needed a new strategy

I had an idea for a fun "who would win" video. It's from the live action series Revelations of the Seal of Orichalcos and it's from episode 36. The question here being: Could Xashin have defeated Valtor?
Here's my question though in the duel Para uses Kazejin (middle piece) to just attack Joey's Flame Swordsman in the maze without moving from the start; why could Black Skull dragon just fire fireballs across the maze if that's the case?
I love it bitch that dragon can’t just fly over the maze it isn’t allowed in. Dark Magician just leaps over the entirety of the maze to get to his space.
can you do true rules of action duels? I'm really looking forward to it and maybe the True rules of the Duel Coaster from Zexal as well? cause I'm really looking forward to them both
even though labyrinth wall was presented as a monster, I do not think it really fills that role in this type of game. Remember, during duelist kingdom, they did things like setting time wizard in the spell and trap zone, as well as having joey play flame swordsman in its purple fusion skin from his hand. In this game, labyrinth wall is more of a field spell than anything.

Looking back, a party composed of Axe Raider (Human Barbarian) Flame Swordsman (Human Fighter) Celtic Guardian (Elf Warrior) and Dark Magician (Human Wizard) sounds kinda dope
Plus the inherent comedy of having just one member of the party be able to live for centuries
Check out Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses for the PS2.
I always wanted a labyrinth wall retrain as a field spell who’s effects reference this duel and it’s rules.
I can’t wait to see the “True Rules of Action Duels”
Thank you for doing this TGS Anime. This duel was totally amazing in the original as the 1st tag-team duel
Really wish a game would come out that has all these alternate duel versions. Labyrinth, Dungeon Dice, etc.
There was a board game version of Dungeon Dice monsters. The sets are probably quite expensive now though.
Labyrinth Duels, Dungeon Dice Monsters, Duelists of the Roses and Falsebound Kingdom are my favorite Yugioh games
There's less confusion in the dub, as it shows it as the monster, Jirai Gumo, falling under "explainable bullshit"
It should also be stated that Duelist of the Roses used something similar to this, only it's one on one and 7x7
My guess is that monsters that can attack directly or inflict burn damage would be busted
@@canyouwavedash3298 Those effects are not allowed under Duelist Kingdom rules.
They might not be allowed in the maze, cause they too big to fit in the maze
Paradox Brothers have a skill that add Labyrinth Wall on the field in Duel Links, I really wished they did something more interesting with it.
@@dancorneanu9144 That's a reasonable ruling, thank you
I feel like the „no flying monsters“ rule is explained in a strange way. It would make more sense to restrict level 9 and above monsters, since they are „too tall“ for the maze.
WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE, LOVE THE CONTENT MAN 😤
If you haven't already, could you try and analyze the rules of the ancient Egyptian 'Diaha' and/or the Shadow RPG from the Millenium World arc? I thought it was a really cool system, and I wish they'd elaborated on it a little more.
Love your stuff, you single handedly got me back into yugioh
I just know that this was a multi-part episode back when you had to wait next week to see what happened. And it was glorious.
This was my favorite episode from Duelist Kingdom. It felt like such a creative way to use the 3d duel fields.
I'm guessing Labyrinth wall was a field spell for this. Or if someone were to do this in real life
As much as we give OG Yugioh before the Battle City arc a LOT of crap, I will admit that OG had more unique sets of duels with the other season to do this being 5DS. That and it was a good duel to have Atem and Joey work together and the duel itself was fun. Nice look into the rules!
Turbo duels were just normal duels. You are thinking ACTION DUELS that were actually interesting and nit just a stupid gimmick
@@petercross1879 Look when I watched 5DS were I was younger, Turbo Duels, to me, felt very gimmicky like some of the OG Yugioh duels but I do know that they are normal duels in 5DS's world.
@@MrDarksol There are unique instances of duel styles in Season 3: Yusei playing a "memorization duel" with all his cards scattered face-down on a table, the protagonist solving Quiz Duels in the style of videogames, free-for-all turbo duels against Placido's robotic army, Aki and Crow ending up in a mirror match while facing Sherry.
@@c.l.a.u.d.e ImThat is why I did say that 5DS was another season other then OG that did have unique duels.
I mean there was also concentration dueling in 5Ds as well which seemed gimmicky.
Truth be told, the paradox brothers explained it pretty well.
Master Duel need special events like this. Imagine a Duelist Kingdom rules events.
No . Master Duel is the competitive for TCG and OCF. Duel link would be the better question and answer.
@@luiscruz3261 there is a Duelist Kingdom event in DL but it's just like regular duels. The main difference is that you pick an attribute and your monsters of that attribute can get a stat boost and you can get a free card in hand for that attribute. The card selection varies per DK event and usually only for the 2 least played attribute, though on the last few days of the event, the free card is enabled for all attributes.
Ironically this is the first duel I watched on the show and I got hooked instantly.
These were by far my favorite episodes when i watched yugioh as a kid.
I think you missed one thing with the safe spaces, the 3 boxes that gave them the ability to summon gate guardian. When it was time to summon suijin, kazegin and saga of the thunder, all 3 Where in the safe spaces before thay fused and became 3 as 1, i just checked to be sure and yes, all 3 where in monsterzones and none in spel/trap.
As a kid this was always one of my favorite duels and it's probably because of the creativity of it and the rpg elements.
really wish yugioh continued to explore side games more often like they did in the first few seasons.
I love this in Duelists of the Roses, crazy stuff
All i remember from this duel is them flipping, stopping, and going "hhhuuaaahhh"
Rewatching this spin-off style of dueling after the release of the box Maze of Memories. the new cards does reflected what it does in the anime
Possibly the biggest shenanigan of duelist kingdom - I summon a monster now I create sub type of duelling wow
I sorta wished that labrinth wall was a field spell rather than high level normal monster, also wall shadow should have been a fusion monster
Nice vid man as always. Waiting for the true rules of Dimension Duels
haha been waited for this one
This is perfect timing because I am watching this just after watching the episodes
My most favorite fight in Yu-Gi-Oh! :D Damn I loved the labyrinth rules.
Shadow Ghoul with Labyrinth Wall could easily make a pretty cool fusion monster in the real world. It could attract in defense position, and maybe something else too. I think I’d call it “Shadow Labyrinth”. :)
If we use Heroclix logic flying monsters not going into the maze makes sense because the walls would go all the way up to the ceiling
Yugioh War of the Roses also was kind of inspired by this!
I think the biggest rule is labyrinth wall cannot be destroyed and is unaffected by opponent card effects
Honestly a Labyrint Duel spin off would be pretty fun. The Problem would propably just be that Link Monsters couldnt move at all XD
this should be a fucking video game
A competitive Video game version of this would be really cool.
Not competitive. Just human vs computer. That way the game won't become terrible
If Yu-Gi-Oh ever gets a carnival or theme park, and this ISN'T the theme for the mandatory maze, I'll be mad.
Not to be a weird pain, but for rule #17, the anime had them alternate turns.
Turn Order was: Yugi, Para, Joey, Dox
When I first got into Yugioh, I had a labyrinth card. I had saw that episode so I asked my friend how to play this card for the labyrinth effect. I was disappointed
Amazing about labyrinth duel in yugioh anime, fantastic job.
I typed Chinese eggman to see some memes and this was the first none YT short video to appear in the results
No worries I was gonna watch already
Big fan of the channel and your work

Also fun fact: the PS1 (or maybe 2?) game Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist of the Roses has a similar dueling style to this variation.
The rules are kinda similar to Duelist of the roses.
I would not be surprised if this Duel was a major influence.
@@jamesturner6979 there were even labyrinth squares in the game that you have to move around.
labyrinth wall should’ve been a field spell.
yo, this screams duelist of roses. Always wondered if it was just a special game to try and introduce yu-gi-oh and make a game about it or if there were actual rules in the series. glad to know labyrinth is probably what they were going for.
Fun fact: In the manga, both of the Meikyu Brothers’ doors led to the same path
Hello TGS Anime! I love your vids! especially the archetype story videos!
I was wondering If I could see a thunder Dragon archetype video? But regardless, keep up the great work!!!
The reason why they couldn’t fly through the Labyrinth is because technically we were seeing through its ceiling.
This may have some inspiration for upcoming cross duel
I loved this spin-off type of duel, wished it was used more often
If we will use Yugi's logic, he will summon drillroid and dig through the labyrinth to cheese it out into victory
can you do true rules of action duels? I'm really looking forward to it and maybe the True rules of the Duel Coaster from Zexal as well? cause I'm really looking forward to them both
If Joey had drawn "shield and sword" they could have smashed the labyrinth with almost literally any monster
even though labyrinth wall was presented as a monster, I do not think it really fills that role in this type of game. Remember, during duelist kingdom, they did things like setting time wizard in the spell and trap zone, as well as having joey play flame swordsman in its purple fusion skin from his hand. In this game, labyrinth wall is more of a field spell than anything.
@@Impulse154 to be fair fields were destroyed a few times during duelist kingdom, Yugi burned the forest and destroyed the moon to drain the sea.
Also Black skull dragon was strong enough that it could just destroy the labyrinth. (Flying monsters cannot enter the labyrinth. KABOOM What labyrinth?)
I've just checked the duel, and the order goes:
Yugi, para,joey, dox
Are you sure about the turn distribution?
