Standing in protest and other forms of protest are fine; disrupting the actual silence is not. To do so, is grossly intolerant and belligerent. It denies any such choice to others. 🍀

Also the media banging on about 'pro-IRA' songs being sung. What nonsense. The only song sung was about Aidan McAnespie, an innocent civilian who was on his way to a GAA match and was murdered (shot in the back) after he passed through a British army checkpoint. It should never be acceptable that poppy fascism etc be forced on people based on historical reasons but British fascists will never accept that.

I’d stay silent for 1 min , as long a it was made clear it was to remember the dead on all sides of conflict.. all countries, all working class souls that fought against oppression.. it’s not though. The so called bad guys, the Germans, the Iraqis , the Afghans, the Palestinians, the Irish, take your pick.. its aim is to commemorate the empire. Remember all dead, because I have more in common with a poor enemy, than a rich friend

Unless that commonality is broken when the "poor enemy" wishes to observe a minute's silence for which he, of course, perceives to be in honour of the country's war dead, however. It's perfectly acceptable to boycott the minute's silence or protest it in some other way but to actually disrupt it is denying the opportunity of those wishing to show respect for the country's war dead. I'm an Irish nationalist and Celtic supporter that grew up in the midst of the Troubles in Belfast and I find the actual disruption of the silence both reprehensible and repugnant. To disrupt a silence for the dead is crassly intolerant, one-sided and belligerent. 🍀

The subjegation of the irish people for centuries is absolute justification of the booing. Why shouldnt there be a debate to remove the minutes silence in general. We are always being told to keep the politics out of football. The money raised from poppies goes to the British Royal Legion which pays for soldiers that served in northern Ireland. Respecting a royal family shoved down our throats and legally enshrines the protestant faith , excluding catholics is nothing to celebrate. The nonsese that Irish soldiers joined the British army is in no way vindication of that as more often than not this was only achieved through starving and brutalising the families of irish people and was made to seem like the only stable income available.

The proper historical discourse that allows people to analyse all aspects of British history has been buried to allow the jingoistic zealots to beat on about the poppy and what it represents to them without ever thinking about the victims on the receiving end of British imperialism/colonialism. These individuals are 'stone age' in their approach and will only ever accept rhe 'Rule Britannia' discourse without looking at things objectively in a mature, non-biased fashion. Instead the red 'poppy fascism' mist comes out and they cannot accept a rational debate over why the poppy might be seen as a threatening symbol to others and a reminder to these folk of innocent, loved ones lost at the expense of military forces' actions.

Putting the past behind you involves owning up to what was done in the past. The recent amnesty put through Westminster conflicts with this, but yet a minute’s silence will be foisted upon people in Liverpool, Glasgow etc. when one of the British Royal family passes away.

Simon isn't getting the point. If it was the 2 world wars we were commemorating there would not be a problem. The point is that the British establishment have added to these events the conflicts of Iran,Iraq, the Falkland Islands and more importantly the recent Irish troubles where the British paras assassinated civilians in cold blood . Learn the history and get a grip.
