Any serious music fan needs this box set! The live discs prove The Who where the best live band on the planet !
Or at least any serious Who fan.
I knew The Who were a powerhouse live band just from the Live At Leeds album. I’d loooooove to get this set, I already know how much it’s going to run in stores. 😮😮😮😮
It's the best ever boxset. Only missing are Pete Townshend s demo recordings for the abandoned or.lost WHO 1972 album "ROCK IS DEAD".
That’s because it was only an idea that turned into Quadraphenia. The songs have all be released in one form or another. But it would be nice if they gathered up the tracks and released it as originally intended. I’m surprised it wasn’t included in the Quadrophenia boxset.
I have the 24k gold CD of 'Who's Next' remastered from the original 2- track masters and believe me when I tell you that you cannot improve upon that version of this album and i've got every version they have ever released of it. On a good audio system, it sounds almost holographic. The depth of the sound is like 3D imagery. The cymbals and synth sounds have a shimmer to them you can't believe was possible to capture way back in 1971. It reveals the quality of the mics used and the recording equipment of the day.
👍
My absolutely favorite Who album. All killer no filler. Box set is worth every penny for a crazy Who fan. 😂
I just got my WHos Next box set yesterday! There's so much great stuff it's almost overwhelming!....I cant wait to get such a deep dive on! Im even upgrading my home sound system to listen to this thing properly!
Brilliant
I look forward to your reviews.
Always so positive.
Amazon have my copy flying to my enthusiastic hand.
An old friend picked up a copy of the radio play from back in the day.
So looking forward to spending a weekend with this set.
Greetings from Western Australia
I see no reason to be negative. If I don’t like something, I don’t cover it. That simple. But for this boxset it’s a beautiful thing and well worth it IMO. Enjoy yours when it arrives.
Great Job!! Thank You! I Ordered Mine!! 💿 😎
Excellent! Enjoy! 👍
Now THAT is a boxset!
It so is!!
Great review and a great as always,I have the box set and I think it is brilliant.....Thankyou for all your shows Brendon,as they are great viewing.
Cool set. I don’t have any Who albums in my collection but have been contemplating doing a deep dive since I’ve only heard their hits. Love hearing that you did the deep dive with Pete at Sea of Tranquility. He’s such a great guy
Thst is how a boxset should be done. I am not a The Who fan but I like how they put the effort to deliver a nice package.
Cool boxset. 😎👍
Indeed!
Damn, that’s a hard core box set!
Cool. That's probably the nicest one you have
Your collection BLOWS me away!!! So awesome. Your passion for music is next level! Keep up the great videos. Enjoy seeing your discoveries at the record shops! ⚡️⚡️
Great box set!I got the 4 lp set that has the civic live set and downloaded the 2 disc deluxe plus various live tracks that I wanted to hear when I’m out driving.Big fan of the entire set! Thanks for the video!
I found that I actually liked the Young Vic show best. It that’s due to the set list mostly.
Thank you for sharing this. I can’t wait to get this box set
I hope you enjoy it when it arrives!
@@BrendonSnyder thx my dad told me to order it from Amazon today. I get it Saturday
Great unboxing video Brendon. This set looks superb as you say maybe the graphic novel could have been reduced in favour of a thicker book about the album/band. Thanks for the heads up re the Uncut Magazine CD, I've picked up a copy of that today and the tracks sounds fabulous including the band demos banter (makes me want the complete set). Kudos to Pete Townsend for putting this CD box set out - extra power for the CD format! 🙂
Just heard the two live San Francisco tracks on this sample CD. Wow amazing, this is a never before released live recording folks until now and rarely bootlegged in soundboard quality. Sounds absolutely fantastic cranked up to max. What else is still in the vaults by The Who?!
Totally awesome box set!!! Love the Who
I love everything about it. They really did a superb job. Except of course not protecting the buttons so they don’t damage the things around it. But otherwise amazing.
it's beyond awesome. it's overwhelming.
I'm a big Who fan. I ordered the two disc version. The big super deluxe box set looks like a really nice well done set, but as much as I would like to have it I just couldn't justify shelling out that kind of money for it. But like I said, looks really nice.
For me this was something I’ve been waiting for since the first time I found out about the aborted Lifehouse project which is probably 25 years ago at this point so I had to jump on it.
Well done Brendon, Great review. Differently getting this Boxset.
Great review.
Thank you Simon!
Great review Brendon!! Thank you! Just ordered mine. I have the Lifehouse Chronicles box, and wasn't going get this. But I decided to pull the trigger!!!
I am surprised a film has never been made. I feel the time is right.
The Blu-Ray contains Dolby Atmos bonus tracks that you won’t find on streaming platform versions
👍
great review Brendon. Many thanks. When you have had time to digest the box, would be great to hear what you think of the individual discs.
Great review! Idea for a show/series on here or something with Sea of Tranquility. What makes this compilation album great? (A beginner's guide to a band that's new to you). Keep up the great work!
That is certainly a good idea. I may have to steal it for a video! 👊
@@BrendonSnyder Please do!
My photo has that bump as well. Seems that they've had them all packaged the same way ...
Super 👍
👍
I got my who’s next box set tonight. Came in great shape. Only thing the preprinted autographed pic was dented at the bottom corner cuz the buttons was turned wrong
Glad you got your box and I hope you enjoy it. Sorry to hear yours was also damaged but I guess at this point it was to be expected. I’ve heard from so many that they have experienced the same thing. But the music is where it’s at anyway. Enjoy!
@@BrendonSnyder true. Thx bro Merry Christmas
The 155-tracks, they counted the 23 tracks on the Blu-ray twice (once per different mix....original and SW atmos and stereo.) Hence from 132 tracks to 155 tracks. And if you just count the tracks on the 10 CDs, it's 109 tracks on the CDs. 23 + 23 on the Blu-ray, make 155 tracks.
Haha…I thought it might be something silly like that. I figured it wasn’t just a mistake but a different interpretation. Thanks for clarifying.
Hi Brendon, Thanks for a great video once again! I had the same issue with the pins pressing through the photograph. Have you had any luck getting it replaced? I have reached out to the seller and the label but no one can seem to help me. Thanks!
The great thing about the "Who's Next" album is how rare it is that a bands 5th album is their best album. Typically it's the first or second album.
It also shows the power of taking a little longer to develop good ideas.. in this case revising Lifehouse into Who’s Next. While the Lifehouse material is great in its own way (classic early-70s Who, but sounds like a 5th album)… after some time and perspective on the part of the musicians, we ended up with the all-time masterpiece Who’s Next as we know it.
Also: My order form Amazon didn't include the inner shipper box! It was inside a large amazon box with air-packing around it. The plastic wrap was torn in several places, but was 90% intact. Box wasn't dented or scratched, so I wasn't too upset.
Have the two cd version arriving today. The price tag for the full box didn’t make sense to The Captain. Cheers
I understand, the boxset is super heavy and it’s too much cargo for one ship. 👍
@@BrendonSnyder Lol yes don’t want the ship to run aground.
Brendon - I purchased mine from Amazon as well and have the same issue with the buttons damaging the photo & replica tour programs. Do you address directly with Amazon or some other method? I’d hate to ship the whole thing back to Amazon and receive another if there is an easier way. Great video review BTW.
No it’s not Amazons fault. I don’t even consider it the shippers fault. It’s the fault of the boxset designer not thinking about how the buttons could cause damage. So for me I’ll be reaching out to the record label.
@@BrendonSnyder ok, thank you for the quick response. If you have any contact to share for the label, could you share? I cannot find anything for Universal UK/Polydor support.
To include a hard, bulbous object in a box liable to cause damage to its other contents is the height of folly. Some ‘cushioning’ or even a matchbox-size box to contain the badge, would have prevented the harm caused to other memorabilia. Given the vast outlay in cost, this lack of attention to detail is most perplexing.
I am totally jealous Brendon on this set.
Yeah it’s pretty special. Check it out online if you can. It’s worth a listen.
Just seen a video highlighting that the book is missing pages 73 to 88. Not sure if your copy is affected, hopefully you can return it in time.
It's too bad that rock opera didn't happen back then. I'm weird, I always want to hear the new stuff. I loved The Who back then. The first time I heard Who's Next in 1971 I was in Berkeley, CA, at a commune across from the Berkeley campus. Heard Derek And The Dominos and also Surfs Up (Beach Boys) for the first time. The Who has always been in my top five bands of all time, even now. The new stuff is is almost painful for me to listen to though.
Here is a short ditty that has nothing to do with this box set but does involve The Who. They were playing a gig in the city where I lived, called The Freedom Palace. The place was not air-conditioned, making it unbearable, so much so, they quit playing mid-show and that was that. Very dramatic.
Oh yeah, this does appear to be a very inviting box.
Yeah that sounds awful! I’d be out of there too.
Nice who shirt Nice box set what is on the blu-ray
It’s the 5.1 surround sound mixes
Just bought the 2 disc version
👍
Oui monsieur. Merci beaucoup
Awesome set! I hope this won’t be a 1 time listen situation all that money spent. Just saying. I will be listening to it Spotify when I get a chance.
No not at all. I like how the discs are broken down. The order of the tracks makes each discs listenable. I’ve really enjoyed Disc 2 - Pete’s demos for Lifehouse. That disc right there is worth it alone. But I also like Disc 6 - Singles & Session and the live show at Young Vic’s.
Brendon, I emailed Universal Music inquiring about replacing the damaged items and got zero of a response; no big surprise, honestly. I'm hesitant to swap it back out thru Amazon in fear of getting a worse damaged set (right now the 8x10 photo has a ding away from the band member faces). Have you reached out and had any success with replacing your damaged items?
I got zero response as well. I’ve heard this across the board so I think trying to swap it out you’ll just get it again. Also it seems there are other issues like pages missing from the book. Mine has all of the pages but other reviewers have commenting on missing pages. Seems Universal Music F’d the whole thing up which is really unfortunate when the price tag is so high.
Thanks. Which book has the missing pages? My book for the album is complete, but I haven't checked the Graphic Novel pages yet...@@BrendonSnyder
And these big companies don't give a shit about how much we pay. They've always been that way going back past the time when you'd spend $15 on a cassette tape in 1985, only to find ZERO notes or pics inside the blank cover! Still makes me mad to this day! To quote PT: 'Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!' Or is it same shit, different decade, LOL? @@BrendonSnyder
Those live disks are audio only or are they video concerts?
Audio only…the way I like it. I’m not a fan of DVDs and Blu-ray’s. I’d rather get a show to listen to than to watch. But that’s just my preference.
@@BrendonSnyder I hear you, but the Who was such a visual act, especially in their prime, I would like to see a video of those concerts...
Nice review, but for me a lot of unnecessary stuff, I think Tull and Faces - Five men walk in a bar. Did it right.
Ok
is there an actual CD that has lifehouse in a running order as townshend thought it would be?
In a word - "cool"
And what a perfect word that is!
Any follow up to sets with damage? The badges are making dents on the photo in memorabilia. Amazon will not replace, only refund, but buying again runs risk of another damage. Universal Music UK will do nothing if it was not purchased from them. Lots of buyers have seen damage. For the set cost, it’s not fair to fans.
I think it's great but concentrating on one album is overkill I prefer studio album box sets but you enjoy it
But if you already own all the albums then what’s the point of a studio album collection boxset? Plus those types don’t usually come with much if any unreleased material. So I have all of The Who album and I’m absence of a new album I’ll take unreleased material from my favorite era of the band.
It was cool to see inside the box better. Its a beautiful release. As a vinyl fan somewhat problematic but you can’t argue about the beauty of this set.
Not sure where that lifehouse backstory you told came from but ummm not so much.
The failure of lifehouse has a lot of level’s including the film project not coming together and the band wanting to move forward in a timely manner. They were also desperate to drop Tommy and needed the material.
And thats just the beginning of the issues. Which also includes Pete not really finishing it off completely at the time.
Obviously there is more to the Lifehouse back story than I covered but I’m trying to keep things concise. However, what part of the story do you feel was incorrect?
This has to be the best box set of the year.
You’re probably right about that!
This is just like the Tommy re-issue, dead. My old Decca just killed it. Nothing coming out of Abbey Road 1/2 speed sound good.
C'mon man, I'm not making the big bucks like you, I work in a grocery store for God's sake, now it's the Who's box set, I can't afford all this stuff I've got to eat, your killing me!
Trust me I debated on shelling out for it too. But then I looked at all the content and decided it was worth it. It’s a lot upfront but the price balances out over the 11 discs to $22.50 each. But then added in the books and memorabilia and the cost of each disc comes down more. I just looked at it as buying 10 CDs and 1 Blu-ray over a period of time. Also, that’s what credit is for 😉
@@BrendonSnyder you are a wise man, also I enjoyed seeing you on Pete's show, I said to myself the two guys I enjoy watching the most for my music news are here together, that was a nice surprise and an interesting episode on box sets. I also enjoyed how you touched on the different packaging, some good some bad that should be an episode all on its own

Here on RUclips, there are only 109 songs. Is that normal?
Well it’s not what’s on the box. Also someone clarified the box does have 155 tracks if you count the Blu-ray mixes as well.
@@BrendonSnyder Much appreciated.
I would love it more if somehow the posters weren't folded but rolled. It seems if you want to frame the posters they will have fold lines through them. Shame !!
For me the best of the unreleased material has already been issued...plus the price is way too much... I'm good with what i got... looks nice but pass
$257.00 in 2023 would have been $33.90 in 1971...How much was "Who's Next" on vinyl in 1971? I am guess $5.99-$7.99 range?
This is a 10 CD boxset not single disc. And on vinyl it’s a lot more. It all comes down to number of discs/records in the end of the day so it can’t really be compared to a single disc/record from back in the day. They’re two separate things.
@@BrendonSnyder I know, there is a lot of material on it...thanks.
Retailing in Australia for nearly $500 - way overpriced. How much are customers paying for the memorabilia included in the box set? A graphic novel; what a waste of money!
My glossy photo was smashed too. Did you find a contact email or number to see about getting a replacement? @BrendonSnyder
Терпеть не могу эту группу!
