    I was very interested in the early days of the project. Make use of all the old hard drives laying about but now I see it as a waste of electric and bandwidth if both of them were plenty I may give it ago, but until then I will enjoy watching others that can do what I'm unable to.

    I have a single 1U with 12 bays laying around, I can stuff around 40TB in that box with disks I have. The problem is the energy bill. I would get around €60 to €80 a month from StorJ for the storage, but the energybill alone would also be quite high in the €50's. So it wouldn't be worth it for me. Also, you have to account for failures and I wouldn't be able to pretty much rebuild my whole lab.
    I like the concept, but the energy pricing is too high for it to be worth it for me.

      yea i agree, I was thinking you almost need solar panels. If one could find some free or cheap panels that someone was replacing, it could be used in say a shed to just power the systems for free.

    That’s so cool, I was planing to build a server for hosting my website anyway, I think I will do it similar like you then. Thanks for the great idea. I have 11ct/kwh, I could run additional disks for 0,64€/month. Do you set up multiple nodes to grow them? Is it working that you get more files in total, compared to one big node?

    • @Ottetal
      @Ottetal  11 дней назад +1

      @@Ostenchillt hello friend, good idea! Running Many nodes is just to spread the load over multiple disks. You youre running on modern hardware, I would highly suggest a single node - all data is distributed evenly between a single /24 subnet

    I can buy 1tb drives for 10 euros at my local ewast recycle company. Pretty cool concept, but the drive bay seems pretty expensive to me.

    • @Ottetal
      @Ottetal  12 дней назад +1

      Purchasing new drives for StorJ application is discouraged by the team, and buying 1TB mechanical drives for any purpose is discouraged by .. everyone. They're far too expensive in their electricity cost, compared to what they might yield in gains. I did this only because I had the disks on hand already.

  • @udirt
    @udirt 3 дня назад

    $1,5 to $3 per month with egress sounds kinda much for a storage with almost no service guarantee - they need to have 4-5 copies out, and if they pay for the extra load of rebuilds (audit) then they are highly exposed in case of software bugs etc.

    • @Ottetal
      @Ottetal  День назад

      The current payouts can be found on StorJs website here: storj.dev/node/payouts
      Every single file upload is being broken into 80 shards, of which only 29 is needed to rebuild the file again. Resiliency is built directly into StorJ, and should a node fail an audit, the system will rebuild that piece on another node in another place. StorJ have never lost a single segment - I find it to be very, very sturdy.

    • @Ottetal
      @Ottetal  11 дней назад +1

      Id say it's viable for you too. In the future disks will be cheaper, and you can move to a more dense storage medium - as long as you're not losing money right now, you,re just building passive income *and* helping provide an alternative to AWS in the mean time :)

      @@toseltreps1101 The attached coin is not a regular crypto currency, it's a utility coin. Only a fool would not convert into FIAT as soon as they are paid, because that's what you do with utility coins. Also StorJ only pays for what is actually being stored by customers, so it's an efficient system by design - compared to let's say Chia, where you spend a lot of time plotting lottery tickets that then in the future *might* be used for customer data. THAT is a failing project - StorJ is on exponential growth right now.

    • @Ottetal
      @Ottetal  3 дня назад

      Every single file (or subpart of a file, for that matter), get's split into 80 shards. You get one, and only one shard of the file. 29 shards are required to rebuild a file, and the rebuild happens on client side - not server side.
      From my perspective, all data I store is complete garbage - the value comes only when the network stitches the file back together. This also brings some very interesting performance enhancements, as multiple nodes can work together to send the file, thus getting many of the characteristics of a P2P network ... without any node having the full file of course.

    spændende, kan det betale sig i strøm?. havde en storj server for nogle år siden men serveren gik ned og jeg blev banned for at være offline så opgav at starte forfra :)

    • @Ottetal
      @Ottetal  12 дней назад

      No, these 11 disks will use more power than what the projected $4 income will give. Doing it like this is primarily give me space to add new nodes while I wait for larger disks to become available to me.
      How did your server die? StorJ is (currently) quite generous with downtime - you must have been offline for over two weeks of you got banned.
      Either way, if you have a new server that's spinning anyways it's free money.
