    "Entertainer Jon Stewart ripped military spending as out-of-control and unfocused during a wide-ranging interview with the Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks on Thursday, saying that more needs to be done to get money to troops and families instead of defense contractors.
    “We got out of 20 years of war and the Pentagon got a raise,” Stewart said during remarks at the War Horse Symposium in Chicago on Thursday. “I can’t figure out how $850 billion to a department means that the rank and file still have to be on food stamps. To me, that’s fucking corruption.”*

      We are a flawed democracy on the Democracy Index because of 1) the electoral college 2) plurality voting 3) the Senate 4) allowing state politicians of the majority party to draw district lines instead of an independent commission 5) money in politics (aka, legalized corruption), Citizens United, lobbyists, etc
      Because these things have a near zero chance of changing, we will continue to suffer the results.
      Trump is a warning sign, a symptom, of a broken political system. So, try not to hate the player. Hate the game.

    • @Bat_Boy
      @Bat_Boy Год назад +1

      Keep in mind, as an Independent, your register to vote, and the census, don’t count you as either party, when drawing district lines. If split up evenly b/w left and right (aka, NOT gerrymandered), independents in that district are often the deciding factor in who wins.
      FYI: Most Americans are left leaning, however, the House of Representatives is currently controlled by the right. 🤔 Hmmm…that’s odd. 😅
      Edit: One more thing. You should absolutely HATE plurality voting (our current voting system), that makes 3rd party candidates as spoiler candidates.

Just to get an X-ray or MRI the nearest facility is 1 1/2 hours away. When I have asked about a hospital being built closer, I’ve been told the land is too expensive to buy and build here. They could have built 30 hospitals with a fraction of the money that has gone missing. The older I get the worse my injuries are getting, I’ve had 7 surgeries and I am thinking I have to move out of this area because it is becoming harder and harder to get back and forth to the V.A. It is complete bullshit that veterans are not taken care of much less less handed every possible mental or physical health care they need! They should get the best care available in the country and have salaries that allow them buy a home, enough to eat, health care mental/physical, proper life insurance, the same raises that their superiors get. They put your lives on the line, come back with awful unknown health problems, plus cancer and PTSD. The "support the troops" is a joke, and the citizens should be angry. I do not support war, I don't support the billions spent on the military-industrial complex. However, I support human beings, especially those who are not taken care of properly by the government they defended! They should be able to afford housing, food, and much more. Nobody should be homeless, especially not those who risk their lives and health.
      Class exists! The wealthy live in different worlds compared to everyone else. None of us can imagine what they have access to, their privileges or what they can afford. They live in gated communities with private security guards, their children and schools have security guards. Nothing is beyond a billionaire's or those with several hundred million dollars. Nobody can spend that much money in a lifetime, no matter how many fully furnished houses, and apartments with butlers and maids, 24 hour childcare, snd politicians all over the world; yachts, airplanes, and cars. No matter how much expensive jewelry, clothes, land, islands, or anything else they desire; they can never spend it all. The interest from banks alone is more than enough to live on if you don't buy everything until there is nothing left to buy, or maybe even if you do.
      The government has trillions of dollars and they complain about a few hundred million dollars to bring the poor out of poverty, to feed the hungry, to take care of disabled people, to make sure children are taken care of properly not abused in foster homes. Increasing tax on the very rich has been done in the past to rebuild the country and help the less fortunate; it can be done again. The very wealthy can be taxed far more than they are, including finding hidden money in other countries, and fining them properly for wasting resources like water, and polluting the earth massive amounts. Private planes, huge mansions, high performance cars that contribute greatly to pollution. Inadequate fines for polluting land, air and water; lawsuits when people are killed or seriously injured by their products or pollution are just part of business.
      All of us put up with mega-rich corporations paying much lower wages to the point that their employees can't afford a mortgage or rent, food, utilities, healthcare, clothes, education, and just the cost of living is crazy! A bad economy is an excuse, and other countries to provide incredibly cheap labour for the goods that more prosperous countries buy, while at the same time gouging consumers to make more billions.
      People need to go on strike for better wages and benefits. To raise the minimum wage to keep up with inflation. It is not okay for people to live out of their vehicles or on the street. People need to be paid enough to afford more than just the necessities which now include a computer and the internet, at least, but also some entertainment and non-necessities to increase happiness. Happiness lowers crime rates, leads to better health, lowers drug use, and has other benefits to society. It isn't something we can dismiss lightly as a luxury. Why should bring misery, poverty, and suffering be the default?
      If young able-bodied people are having trouble making ends meet, how are the elderly, single parents, those permanently injured, who have long-term illnesses or disabilities, etc, supposed to live when they can no longer work full time or work at all without enough government assistance to cover real living expenses?
      How can the government justify the rich paying taxes so low they pay zero taxes or get money back when the poor and middle class have higher tax rates?? How can the government justify the very high salaries some politicians receive with benefits, and the fact that many receive huge donations (bribes) from corporations to vote the way they want them to? If a corporation gave you millions of dollars to vote a certain way would you say no? What about several corporations all offering you millions of dollars from each? They are bribes pure and simple. We wonder why westernized countries are less and less prosperous, and the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. Nobody can work hard enough or long enough to make it to "the top" anymore. Rich people are born rich, even the "self-made" are really born rich. Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and anyone else that claims to have gone rages to riches (including actors, singers, politicians, and CEOs were born rich) became more rich.
      The wealthy have connections with other wealthy people who can help them and their children find more opportunities to grow their wealth; the right private schools, the right universities, and knowing the right people get rich peoples' kids get high paying jobs.
      Rags to riches doesn't happen. The rich help each other stay rich, and they don't want outsiders joining their party. Rich people are born rich, including those that the media paints magically inventing tech or becoming stars.
