    In this series, I will be teaching my Malinois, Arih, Scent Detection. I'll break down each step in a format that is easy to understand, but more importantly, easy to implement.
    In episode four, I will be introducing the fourth step that I like to teach a dog when training them on scent detection. This step we will be using food as the primary reinforcer, however, you can also use a toy if you prefer.

    So glad to see someone showing how to teach scent work! Been looking for a while! I built the scent imprinting pipes and he's already good at searching for them, and he lies down and freezes to indicate the find. But, we're working in hiding the scent in the yard and then him finding it.

    Follow your series and it is one of the best I have seen so far. Finally, someone starting a dog from scratch not when the dog knows already everything. You do outstanding work. Now my question is. I believe in the first video you answered someone the scent you are using and you said lavender. Are you going to show us in a future video on how you can change that scent? I mean you have one of the best breed dogs in the world and I'm sure he has to search for something else than lavender...?? :-)

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 года назад +2

      Wow, thank you! Yes, my dog Arih is very smart, but this is the first time I have done scent detection with her. I do plan on coming out with an advanced scent detection series in the future that will be more detailed. However, to add a new scent, just start on step three with the new odor and go from there. Once a dog knows one odor, it's very easy for them to learn a new odor. :)

    I've been using my medication for the scent as I need her to find it if I lose it.
    I can't really smell it, so I'm curious if I should be using something with a strong scent for teaching this or will she pick up on what I'm trying to teach her regardless?
    I'm sure it has a smell, just not something I can detect.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE what I'm learning from you and will be trying to incorporate some of these things into my own dogs training, but I don't see anyone using the showing the dog the objects to search in the most common scentwork sport venues. And .. I'm pretty sure it's not a regional thing, because I've done scentwork in Colorado and in FL. Am I just missing something or ... ???

      Thanks! I was using lavender, but you can also buy scent kits online for nose work training. If you use any oils, just use one drop and don't put it in a location that the dog can lick the actual oil. Use a container with a cotton ball for the odor. If you want to put the odor on a toy, then put one drop on the inside of a lid container and keep the toy in the container overnight. This way the toy will hold the odor, but the oil wont be directly on the toy. I hope this helps! Cheers!

    How do I know when to advance to the next stage? Or are we just giving the dog different looks of the same thing with no real expectations?

      When they are performing what is being taught in the video, then you move to the next step. :)

      @@NateSchoemer that makes sense. It just seemed too easy, she took to that like a duck to water. Thanks.

    I’m not understanding what signal the dog is giving you when you have them get to the odor and immediately say “free.” It looks no different than the non odor blocks..I built three tubes, my boy checks them out, initially started sitting, then lying down, now he lies down and sticks his nose into the side hole and looks up at me..if he stands there and stares at me, I just say “are you sure?” and he lies down and sticks his nose in..I’ve been doing one of the four akc scents each day, I’m not super motivated to change scents each day, guess I should. I’m starting to wonder “what’s next?” The trainers I have gone to started flaking out, now I’m looking to increase my knowledge..

    What is the best time or age to start the scent detection training for dog

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 года назад

      You can start training scent detection to a puppy if you like. When I went though the Tom Rose School for professional dog trainers, I passed all my scent detection requirements when my puppy was only 7 months of age. :)
