Right. Years ago I had a small goldfish pond in my backyard and my chihuahua slipped in it while I was at work. When I got home I couldn't find him in the house (had a doggy door) so I went outside to look for him. He was hanging on to the side of the pond with all his might and I have no idea how long he'd been like that. It was frighting thinking he could have drowned. I can say that he never went near that little pond again and you couldn't make him go near it. He learned from his experience.
Long time resident of Florida here. There is another option. Show your pets where the steps are and they will know how to get out. Cats have no problem climbing out because they are more agile. Only one drawback, you will not be able to keep them out of the water, because they love to swim. This same thing happened to me 40 years ago. I had just moved into my first pool home and was lucky find my dog in time. I shoved my other dog in who was actually trying to help my other dog in the water. I walked to the steps and called them, they swam to the steps, and easily got out. To this day I still kindly tell people that have dogs and pools the story, as a warning. I can not count the times that they say, my dog stays away from the pool. Well all I can say, is accidents happen.

@@lathafalls7675 the owners were out, not home, how could they have came for the dog? We don’t know everything that happened, so why assume that the owners were incredibly irresponsible, when some tiny mistake could have happened
no they need a barrier or some sort of fence surrounding their pool so they can’t fall into the pool in the first place or MAYBE they should not let the dogs outside when they leave their house. a ramp wouldn’t do anything, they already have steps in their pool and the dog did not use them.
Or put in some steps like our pool has. Should be mandatory because you never know what happens when you're not there. Now it's a little dog, tomorrow the next door toddler that wanders off???
@@WillemJandeRooij - Having steps is good, but the little dog was panicking and even went near the steps. It appeared that he could not make out the edge of the pool because the step was so steep that he still felt that he had to swim. Also, when a dog (or a child) panics, they may forget totally that there even ARE steps or be so disoriented that they cannot find them. This even happens to some older kids and adults--especially if they are injured before or during a fall into water. Personally, I would never leave any pet or child under 13 alone at a pool. Probably not anyone, actually. Pools are dangerous and just like when swimming in a lake or the ocean, having a buddy who's awake and aware is a great idea, I feel.
I would think that a ramp would be better , because it's a small dog , and if the cover ever got a small gap in it and the dog got in them he would have practically zero chance of getting out !
It's heart wrenching seeing him swim around like that, not finding a way to get out of the pool😢. Can't believe he was in there for 34 minutes! It's amazing that the other dog saved him. This really could have ended in a tragedy but thankfully it didn't❤️
I really hope they learned from that mistake and have put preventative measures in after this.. Having a dog that size is like having a small child, anyone with a brain would have/should have known to put a cover on the pool..
Really ? you are blown away by the fact a dog realizes when another dog is struggling to survive? Animals help other animals. Seen it thousands of times. I would have been more impressed if the big dog would have jumped into the water to help. The small one fought on its own and was lucky to survive.
Why do people think animals are stupid? There are many occasions when they're more intelligent than humans! And this video proves it... leaving a small dog unattended at a pool it can't get out of by itself and then thinking it's a "freak accident". Lmao. It's very common for small animals to drown in pools, because the walls are too high for them. But humans only think about things their own size and usually don't spare a thought for the safely of anything else (should be mandatory to put a cover on a pool).
@@SkyeAten alright don’t be ignorant now.. “more intelligent then humans” sorry but no😂 we are an apex species and the smartest animal on the planet for a reason.
This is amazing , you can see Jessie bark out "HELP" before realizing she's the one thats going to have to "help" And the bonding that went on after the rescue was ❤❤ Love it
Yes! Early on, you see Jessie bark and quickly look around to see if anyone was coming to help. Once she realized this was going to be a solo operation, she got to it. Simply beautiful.
Thirty-five minutes is an incredibly long time for Chucky to have continued to swim and remain above water💦 Perhaps he was given an extra portion of strength from the idea that his friend Jessie wouldn’t give up his rescue attempts for him. An extraordinarily heartwarming example of true friendship and unconditional L❤️VE
actually the dog in the pool would have died much sooner if the other dog would not have arrived. Studies found animals try a lot harder and a lot longer if they are not alone during their "fight". Seeing the other dog tryn to help motivated the dog in the pool to go longer than he would have if he had been alone. Believing in support/rescue strengthens us.
What a good buddy he is. I pray they showered them both with treats after this ordeal. You'll NEVER be able to tell me that certain animals, especially canines, don't have emotions and don't experience love.
Darwin wrote a book about animal emotions--it's not disputed in scientific circles. What is over-the-top amazing is an animal that actually helps another animal that is not related by blood. Rats--regular lab rats--have been shown to do so--rescue a rat not related to themselves under controlled laboratory settings. They get very attached to their cage mates. But I don't think it has even been proven in dogs. This proves it to me once and for all. No question. A lot of social animals have emotions just like humans--rats, crows and jays, parrots, elephants, dolphins, wolves. It promotes their survival, but usually of family members!
Indeed. This ordeal illustrates why it's vitally important that families train their furry loved ones to locate and use to steps to get outta the pool.
Exactly I'm wondering why they left the dogs in the backyard unsupervised with a pool that doesn't have a fence around it? on top of that it's in South Africa, they have wild animals that no one else on the planet has to deal with! And no I don't mean a lion or a hippo is going to come in the backyard! I mean there's just more critters that you would not want to see in your home or backyard.
@@NovaNix4 Precisely. Who ever heard of an animal or human being who didn't struggle very hard to survive? It comes naturally. Predictable phrases such as 'resilience of the human spirit' is a meaningless attempt at ennobling what is a fundamental human/animal instinct. Have seen ants to all intents and purposes drowned, with their body seemingly destroyed, lie completely still, and then stir, struggle, and recover, carefully clean their body and limbs, and trot off as if nothing had happened.
@@NovaNix4 Pretty sure the phrase is used because of not really knowing what is going on. The Buddha, however, speaks of existence craving: the craving to exist, to be alive, in your words, desire to live.
This is my #1 Video in RUclips history. I cherish it , that poor little guy fought to stay alive and his best buddy, deathly afraid of water but more afraid to lose his dear friend 😍
@@NovaNix4Agree with this completely. In this instance, the little dog isn't on its own so it isn't pure survival instict. It's also a communication with the other dog and they both need to fix the uncomfortable/scary situation and get a relief. I think another way of explaining the difference between humans and animals is that no animal enjoys pain whereas some humans/if not all, in certain circumstances, do. That's because humans apply different meanings to these basic/fundamental experiences. Death is something we can make our mind up about and then develop a will for or against or indifferent. And yet whatever we think about death will often not matter when our basic survival instincs are triggered. We might suddenly feel the need to survive (more like a sensation than feeling) or disregard our own life for someone else's.
The part where Jessie holds Chucky down with her paw after she pulled him out was quite telling. She wanted to be sure he didn’t fall back in. “Listen Chucky, I just faced my biggest fear to save you. Please be still a moment because I don’t know if I can do it again!”
What a brave one, despite her fear of water she still trying her best and saved him. Love how they both running away from the pool right away to be safe.
Retired ocean lifeguard here. Fantastic work dog. Don’t just jump in there or we’d have two victims. You stayed within your abilities and helped as you could without risking a second victim. Very often (with humans) we find two victims submerged as in brother and sister 5 and 6 years old.
I was a pool lifeguard one summer. A 10 year old boy showed me he could swim from one side of the pool to the other. I then asked his little sister if she could do what her brother did. She said "yes" and jumped into the pool. She immediately began to sink. I grabbed the little girl by her hair and pulled her out. I said, "I thought you could swim!" For those who don't know, this was one technique pool lifeguards are trained to use to save someone.
Even I was stressing out watching him struggling in the pool. Jessie really did a heroic act by saving Chucky and also ensuring he don't get in the pool again. Both of them deserves plenty of Treats. 🐾 ♥
How freaking AMAZING are these 2 doggo's!?!? The stamina of the senior one & the eagerness from the other to help him in his time of need! I am literally in awe.. One of the MANY reasons that it INFURIATES me when one learns of how man kind mistreats these creatures & treat them less than.. when all they want is to love & make US happy
A friend's family had 2 dogs years ago. One of their teenage children left the house, thinking both dogs were inside the house. He forgot something and returned to the house to retrieve it. Upon entering the house, he heard barking and scratching sounds. He walked into the room to find one dog inside and could see the other outside in the pool frantically trying to get out. The dog inside had scratched up the carpet, pulled down drapes, scratched and bitten the handle & lock on the sliding glass door. The carpet was spotted with blood from his mouth & paws, as he was trying to get out to help his friend. As soon as he opened the sliding glass door, his dog rushed out and jumped in the pool to help his buddy. The dog who ran to rescue his friend was a herding breed mix. I was told this story one day as we were spending time at their pool. I had asked why one dog kept "herding" the other dog away from the pool. I said "It looks like he doesn't want her to go into the pool." That's when they recounted the story of what had happened months before. They said previously both dogs had enjoyed the pool. But after that event, the herding dog did not want his pal to get near the pool again.
This is the best video I ever seen! Both dogs never gave up. That old little dog? Dog paddling for that long? And the big one was determined to get him outta there. That is unbelievable, amazing and heartwarming.
What a wonderful ending. I'm sure the dog guardians have learned their lesson on leaving the dogs unattended by the pool.Let's all be grateful that it turned out for the best. Good job Jessie.
That must have felt like the longest 34 minutes of Chucky’s 13 years of life 😭😭😭. My heart was breaking watching this poor senior dog paddle for its life for so long so helplessly. I can’t imagine my elderly parents, let alone my grandparents (who would be the equivalent age in dog years), jogging on a treadmill nonstop for that long. 💔 Both of these dogs are heroes - Jessie for being a lifesaver and Chucky for never giving up.
Dog years 😆 don't be so silly . A year is a year because that's how long it takes the earth to orbit the sun that doesn't change for dogs unless you're an idiot .

My husband and I had a pool built some years ago. At the time we had two small dachshunds. We put them in the pool over and over again and showed them where the steps were and made sure they could get themselves out. it's heart wrenching watching the trauma these two dogs went through that could have been prevented.
This is right! Like teaching your kid stranger-danger, equip them with skills, can't always be sure when they have legs and can do all sorts of things without u noticing. In the wild, that's what it means right, you can't help them.

I know this from personal experience. Situations like these often end in tragedy, I’m overjoyed this beautiful rescue pup performed an amazing rescue 💛👏🙏
No one should have to tell the owner that it's a body of water and extremely negligent it's exactly the same as leaving a child around a pool with no one around
A dog slipping and falling into an unsecured pool is not a freak accident, it's a predictable one. Mad props to the big brother for saving the little dogs life.
@@customer5032 You are not required to fence your pool in AZ. That is an option as long as they are completely enclosed by a wall, fence, or other barrier that is at least five feet high, i.e. the fence around your home and backyard.
These people don't deserve either of these dogs. The way they nonchalantly relate the story of their dog almost drowning like they're recalling a lovely summer picnic they had tells me they were probably more excited about getting footage for Dodo than worried about the fact that their negligence almost cause their pet to lose its life.
I love a good underdog story. That little senior treaded water for 30 minutes, true fighting spirit. And Chucky fighting through his own fear, absolutely amazing and inspiring. I'm so happy both the doggies are okay. What a beautiful friendship 😍💖
Your dog’s (or any pet’s) loyalty is the result of your love and care (as well as their love, ofc). Thank you for helping this dog grow into such a hero, and also, teaching these dogs what it means to have a caring pack. And in the future, probably put guards or something around the pool.

Amazing that the bigger dog was able to help! 😍 A good thing to come from this video is that other animal owners with a pool can learn from it and protect their own pets by getting a pool cover or putting a ramp into the pool so their pets can climb out (which will stop wild animals from drowning too). And the owners seem to have learned from the incident too, because they're getting a pool cover! It's always good to see people make improvements to make their home safer for their animals 😊

One thing that is imperative (and also very easy to do) for dog safety is to train them regularly to enter and leave the pool by stairs only. So they learn the proper sate access and don’t panic bc they’ve practiced it a hundred times and it becomes automatic.
Must teach your pets where the steps are and praise, praise, praise them for learning it, and doing it on their own! We did this with our dogs and our big indoor pool because it might save their lives. Also, we took them into the pool to play with us, so they would not panic, and let them go and if they chose to go to the steps and get out, they got praise for that!

I know what kind of homeowner leaves access to a pole for a dog ? Sometimes I think these pet owners shouldn't have pets. I watched another one where this guy took his dogs rock climbing, and that idiot fell off the cliff and pulled both the dogs off the cliff with him. The guy died and someone said all those dogs were so loyal they stayed with them. Both those dogs broke all four of their legs. So it probably wasn't so much loyalty as it was they couldn't walk. I think a lot of these people validate their lives through their telephone camera and put these dogs in really bad situations.

It is an animal bro. Not a kid. I have never worried that a wolf would drown near a lake. If you want to buy a safety belt and car seat for your dog because you love him so much, knock yourself out. This is why you never leave your pets outdoors unattended, especially when there is a pool in the middle of it! Think of dogs like toddlers, they don't always have the capacity to assess dangerous situations and avoid them. Would you leave your toddler unattended/leave the house completely in a back yard with a pool? No? Then don't do it with your dogs either. There was a horror story a while ago in my area where someone left their retrievers or labs (can't remember which breed) out in the back yard while they were out. Teenagers jumped in their yard and hanged/killed their dogs. This was caught on their security cam, but of course, it was too late for the poor dogs.

Anyone with a pool who has a dog or cat, this is why you take the time, however long, to teach them where the steps are to get out of the pool. Get in the pool with them, place them in the pool at different locations and show them where the steps are to get out, doing this could make the difference of coming home to a live pet or a dead one at the bottom of the pool.

That is why those who have an unattended pool should always leave a ramp in the water, not only for their own animals but also for wild ones.
Great idea. Never heard of that but a ramp should be mandatory
Maybe train a dog (repeatedly if necessary) until he understands that the top step means safety even if he couldn't get out of the pool on his own.
100% agree. Fantastic idea.
Can’t believe this isn’t common sense for some people.
no they need a barrier or some sort of fence surrounding their pool so they can’t fall into the pool in the first place or MAYBE they should not let the dogs outside when they leave their house. a ramp wouldn’t do anything, they already have steps in their pool and the dog did not use them.
I want to hear that the parents learned their lesson and covered the pool! These babies are heroes!❤❤

Or put in some steps like our pool has. Should be mandatory because you never know what happens when you're not there. Now it's a little dog, tomorrow the next door toddler that wanders off???
@@WillemJandeRooij There are steps wdym. Right where the little one falls in.
Pools are dangerous and just like when swimming in a lake or the ocean, having a buddy who's awake and aware is a great idea, I feel.
its good that they're getting a cover for the pool now, hopefully that will prevent another stressful situation!
Oh they are?! Thank God 🌹

Blown away by how smart this dog was to recognize his sibling's distress and then try to formulate a recue plan. Incredible.
Really ? you are blown away by the fact a dog realizes when another dog is struggling to survive?

Precisely.
@@NovaNix4
Pretty sure the phrase is used because of not really knowing what is going on.

This is absolutely heart wrenching. I can barely stand to watch.

I said, "I thought you could swim!"
For those who don't know, this was one technique pool lifeguards are trained to use to save someone.

Wow, what a story!!!!
Do you blame him? I wouldn't let the other dog near the pool again either.

And here I thought the big dog was going to show the little one where the steps were. How sweet was this story! Glad you have a hero in your house!
I thought he was trying to steer him to the steps too
Must teach your pets where the steps are and praise, praise, praise them for learning it, and doing it on their own! We did this with our dogs and our big indoor pool because it might save their lives. Also, we took them into the pool to play with us, so they would not panic, and let them go and if they chose to go to the steps and get out, they got praise for that!
Really warms your heart to see this dog care so much and save his friend! Beautiful 😍
Yes and I'm so happy he got a medal for his bravery
I am just seeing this now and it brought me to tears. I love animals and pets. I used to have dogs and they all have passed and I have now a cat. To know he swam for 34 mins was surprising. I know dogs are special and they truly give unconditional love. He is a hero!!!! And so glad that this did not end it tragedy and that you had a camera installed to see what happened. It makes ppl learn that maybe have something in the water that will help animals if they ever fall in. Such Love 🐕🦮
What a story, what a wonderful story. The world need feelgood stories like this. God bless and greetings from Australia
So glad Jessie was really brave enough to go near the water to rescue her best little friend Chicky, it was difficult to see Chucky in the water for a long time but heartwarming when Jessie saved him, so happy that they're getting a pool cover! God bless all
I love how shortly after getting rescued you can see how happy they were!
I saw this previously but didn’t know about the aversion to water. That makes me even more impressed. Who said dogs only have two brain cells? We saw perseverance, loyalty, courage, anxiety, concern not to hurt the smaller dog, joy at having accomplished the task. I also loved the way the bigger dog pushed the backside of the smaller dog farther away from the pool after he got him out to make sure he didn’t fall back in again. WOW!!😮😮😊😊

@@camd0407was that necessary?
@@mogulme6190 Since when did, or should, people comment because it's necessary? Was your comment necessary? No, but you did it anyway. Why is that?
So tense watching this. 34 minutes! Poor baby, rescued by an amazing hero. They are just adorable. ❤
That's such a long time for a small dog to be swimming. They get tired very quickly and give up. I'm so happy he's ok and that the big dog was able to save him. ❤️❤️❤️
NEVER leave your pool open and unattended with your animals nearby. This isn’t about judgement, just pass the message along!!!
I mean. . . . . . . I’m completely judging these people. Their own negligence almost killed their dog. I think they completely deserved to be judged, especially after calling it a “freak accident.” Taking absolutely no responsibility for what happened to that poor little elderly baby.
@@samanthacarpenter3336 yep. If they had a kid they certainly wouldn't be on this channel. More like the evening news. Lol.

@@user-ih4fd9sf8x exactly, and also, we don’t know everything that happened, how would we know if the owners didn’t just make one tiny mistake that lead to a chain of events, those of which being shown in this short clip
*Absolutely amazed at how intelligent this dog is, recognizing his sibling's distress and attempting to come up with a rescue plan. Truly incredible!*
My heart was racing!!! It was heart wrenching to see Chucky fighting so hard to get out. Jessie, you’re a hero… this is all unbelievable! I love dogs so much, they are angels sent from above! Chucky and Jessie, you have a special place in my heart!!! Love and hugs, from the USA. 💜🐾🐾💜
Don't leave your dogs unattended next to a pool!
No kidding!!! That was my first thought when I started watching the video.
Or do, whatever. 😹
@@matthew-jy5jp what if they forgot to close the door? You don’t know. To get to my pool you need to open a door so it doesn’t matter if it’s locked or not because my dog doesn’t know how to open a door lol.
@@matthew-jy5jp that person who went rock climbing probably didn’t think before he did it and if it wasn’t a mountain wouldn’t there be a staff or someone to say you can’t do that.
I’m so happy that sweet puppy is okay. It could have been a different outcome. Please put a gate around your pool or provide a ramp and teach you animals how to get out of the water. Bless both those sweet dogs.
In Australia it’s illegal not to have a fence around your pool area...
We have two little Shih Tzu, and we have taught them where the stairs are. We bring them into the pool with us and even though they’re not crazy about the water, we make them swim numerous times and show them how to get out if they are to fall in
And yes...there should be a safety ramp for kids and pets!
If the dog wasn't smart enough to use the steps in the pool how would it have known how to use a ramp?
@@randyjones3180 you teach it
@@manp1039 so why not just teach it to use the steps?
@@randyjones3180 what ever will work.
It is an animal bro. Not a kid. I have never worried that a wolf would drown near a lake. If you want to buy a safety belt and car seat for your dog because you love him so much, knock yourself out. But not everyone is going to treat their dog like a child. At some point, an animal needs to have basic survival instincts. I’m sorry
I think this video really hit me hard because I currently have 2 Poms, and 1 that has passed away. To see that Pom struggling like that just broke my heart.
Wtf
Gawd I hate sanctimonious people who feel the need to lecture others.
Labrador Retriever is one breed so you are probably thinking of that.
@@_Y.Not_ How about mentioning how they learned their lesson. Not a peep. Myself, I think that is the most important point. Some one has to be responsible & mention it. 🙄
You see ladies gentlemen..this is why I do believe animals have a special bond not just with us but with everything..just beautiful ❤ thank you this as made my year..beautiful...
Seeing this struggle breaks my heart even more for the cat we found in my mom's pool 5 years ago. My sister and her husband removed the ladder and never covered it for the winter. Knowing she probably fought for her life until she couldn't is soul crushing.
Since my mom, sister and bil have refused to cover the pool (or allow us to) my husband and I have punctured the new liners twice.
My kitten drowned in my neighbor’s pool. Same thing happened.
So sorry to hear that.
