Desert Blues from Mali is recognized as the origins of modern American Blues. "Tinariwen" is a music group of Tuareg-Berber descent. They have been together singe 1979 and have won a Grammy. They are joined here on stage with legendary Blues harpist (harmonica) Billy Branch.

It's my understanding they are originally from Southern Sahara--part of Northern Mali. Forced to flee in the 70's to Algeria because of economic and political situation --they met in Algeria and formed the band.

These guys are really from the deserts of Algeria not Mali. Fyi

They're established in Algeria, but they're not all from Algeria. The lead singer Ibrahim Ag Alhabib is from Mali. The rest of the group, I'm not sure. They're Tuareg, people of the deserts (Kel Tinariwen), that's all that matters culturally.

I know Ibrahim Ag Alhabib is from Mali, the rest of the group could be from Mali, Algeria and Libya. But you know what, it doesn't even matter, all that matters as a culture and music is that they're Tuareg.
