Excellent review Sam! It seems we're all tired of SEGA not really caring about the quality of Sonic. It's hard to be excited for a new Sonic game when even some ports and a rerelease ends up like this.
Yeap Sega ruin Sonic Colors Ultimate and now Sonic Origins, this makes me not confident in trusting them to re-releasing older Sonic games anymore such as Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 otherwise they would ruin those too. Remember Sega ruining old Sonic games are not new, they ruin Sonic 1 on the music aspect when they port it to the Sega Dreamcast as part of the Sega Smash Pack collection and after that ruin Sonic 1 again when they port it to the GBA later on as Sonic Genesis. It's always Sonic that they could easily ruin when it should be Sonic that they need to perfect every time.
@@VOAN don’t worry pal you don’t need to worry about Sega ruining SA1 and 2, they already did with DX and battle on literally anything but the Dreamcast
Yeah...personally my love for the franchise died at Team Sonic Racing. It became clear Sega were never going to give us a good level of quality any more. Just not touching current and future Sonic games, but will always enjoy the classics. Thankfully have the Mega Collection Plus on PS2 still, least Sega can't do anything to mess that up!
I definitely was interested to see your thoughts, especially since you’ve had more time with the game. I personally enjoy the collection, but I can also see it’s flaws. Great review, and happy to see the return of Bob Cinos!
Fun fact: The drop dash in Sonic 1, CD, and 2 is actually just a spin dash the moment you touch the ground again. You can even see Sonic stand right before you take off lol. However in Sonic 3&K, the drop dash is the same as Mania’s (and even has animations!)
Kinda odd how they couldn't get it right cause in the Sega Ages versions of Sonic 1 and 2, the drop dash that was in those versions was the same as in Sonic Mania as well. Sega mess up big time here, Headcannon should had just give M2 the games instead of Sonic Team, I betcha Sonic Origins would had turn out a lot better had M2 gave it the finishing touch.
Sam’s reaction to the music is hilarious😂 - Never played Sonic 3 and Knuckles so I didn’t know they changed that much. Glad you saw so much of the differences and give a great review
This was a dope review bro! Glad you covered both the good things and were really critical of the negatives. They were so close to making Sonic Origins the definitive version of the classics but its a shame that it didnt come out this way. Hopefully we get some good updates and patches in future. I've been tryna play it for the last few days but the slowdown I've experienced in these near 30 year old games has really put me off. I love Sonic but if it performs worse than a version I can find on a browser, it makes it hard to justify picking it up to anyone else. Once again, great review bro!
I died laughing at Sam's reaction to Sonic 3 & Knuckles new music. My stomach hurts as I laugh too hard! XD Thank you for sharing your honest review to Origins, Sam. I totally respect that. SEGA should take notes to Origins. They should listen to Sonic 3 music clearly to see how it sounds good or not.
The old Sonic CD cutscenes were actually upscaled and cleaned up by a team of professionals. You can notice that some of the ghosting and film imperfections are gone now!
The craziest thing is that this is basically Sega of Japan hijacking the Taxman/Stealth ports by using Hedgehog Engine 2 as the core of it all, and then running the Retro Engine ports on top. So Sega themselves were the ones that introduced bugs everywhere, Headcannon got pushed for releasing 3&K before it was finished according to Stealth himself to meet the birthday deadline, and Sega outright hijacked the audio playback, both music and sound, to handle the audio themselves. Which is why CD has shifting volume levels every other track, all the music sounds like recordings of original stuff instead of the remastered takes that the old ports had, and why all of 3&K sounds like muffled garbage doing second-hand recordings off of Model 1 Genesis hardware. Sega tried to take over and define the project their way, and they introduced new bugs, took lazy solutions or did nothing at all for other things, and basically expected it to sell either on being another Sonic collection, or on Headcannon's work with 3&K while treating Headcannon like disposable contractors in the process. The whole thing reeks of a dispassionate and gross mishandling, and only furthers the perception that Sega of Japan - not Sonic Team mind you, specifically the off-team stuff at Sega - just doesn't care.
I appreciate your insight, your reviews are always well articulated and informative. I'm sorry to see that you and many other fans are experiencing several technical issues with the game. I'm 80% through story mode on PS5 as of now, and I'm grateful and happy to say that I haven't experienced any of these glitches or bugs that have been demonstrated, so far. The game has been an absolute blast for me! I look forward to your future content, Sam!
I’m not a casual fan, I’ve been a fan for years which is why despite having fun with this collection since Launch Day and with Colors Ultimate launching at a bad state, I can’t help but feeling bad for SEGA knowing that the games that are supposed to bring in new Sonic fans after the movies are not properly made. Seeing as how your review was literally perfect and so fucking funny, I hope SEGA listens and patches this game because if done right, this collection could go to big heights!!
Patches won't change the reception, colors ultimate is still remembered as a buggy mess despite most of the bugs being patched out, Sega hasn't handled Sonic with respect in years now
@Gunman yeah colors ultimate was soo terrible so origins is alright I really loved this game so freaking much but the things that are irritating is the super sonic theme changing to a sucky 4th version prototype but the game is still okay as usual
We should say "momentum based gameplay" that includes slopes, air, wall running, and more. But, the point is that it specifies that we want gameplay more closely BASED around momentum.
SEGA not caring about the quality of its most popular I.P. Sonic is definitely a recurring theme! The fact that ugly sonic was even allowed to be made by paramount in the first place is prove that Sega is careless and is often incompetent with quality control
Sonic 1's weird jump movement can actually be fixed in-game. It requires entering level select, enabling sonic 2 and 3 items, and that gives sonic the insta-shield, and loosens his movements a bit On that note, why does level select have to be used to enable things like elemental shields and super sonic in sonic 1?
Thank you for keeping it real, Sam. With recent example how Mario and Rabbids is turning out with the quality and passion even in marketing, Sega Japan needs to aim the bar higher. If they want to be a successful business, they need to return to the basics.
It sucks when you realize why the new Sonic 3 remake isn't as good as it could've been. It was Headcanon's passion project ever since he showcased his concept for a Sonic 3 mobile port made with the Retro Engine. Now that him and his team have been given a chance to fully realize that passion, the company higher ups made his team rush out a buggy build of the game, ruining yet another masterpiece. He has a whole Twitter thread discussing this. It's always the higher ups' faults. Companies do not like fun, they like money.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had input lag and ran into several bugs. At first I thought it was a me problem 😂. Hopefully something that can be resolved in an update.
I think the issues that NEED to be fixed, stuff that even casual players can spot are: -Fix the Tails glitch in Sonic 2 -Fix whatever is going on in Marble Garden Zone Act 2 24:29 -and fix the blur …and probably Carnival Night Zone’s music because holy hell!
Solid review, Sam. 27:54 Just a slight correction: They do have some IDW covers, at the bottom of the Normal Collection. There's six covers in total, but yeah, it would've been nice to actually be able to read some comics. This collection is full of so many missed opportunities.
I have to admit, there were a LOT of bugs and glitches in 3&k. Taking a risk by saying this, but I personally don't have any problems with the music though, I think it's cool! Still, I really hope they don't just leave this game out to dry and actually work to improve it to the best quality.
heres the thing if you where a sonic fan and owned a PC in the 90s the old PC port had the same tracks with the MJ ones taking out . so there also still nostalgic. i like both MJ and beta PC track. as for the remixes they could grow on me . sonic origins as bigger issues like Bloody tails not respwaning so you cant hear the music any way lol
Amy being so prominent in the animation and promotional material is weird. I just... really wish she were playable. I don't even personally like Amy, it's just weird to see her given such prominence despite how insignificant she actually is (a minor role in a single game). Her fans will certainly love it and if they're going to do a "Plus" version, she would be appealing.
Love that you can prove these is a middle ground between blindly loving everything about Sonic, or being Arin Hanson. Finally having these games in widescreen is great for those who were annoyed by the difficulty in seeing what's up ahead. Makes me hope we get widescreen remasters of the Sonic Advance games, 2 in particular. My biggest irk with this game is the lack of options. Why am I forced to have the drop dash? Why does story mode force Tails to stick with you? Why can't you play Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles by themselves? Choose lives or choose coins? And that ties back in with the classic mode thing. Maybe I prefer the original games over the retro engine with its pretty rough collision detection. Getting near anything that's moving up or down is pure stress.
Great review dude. Basically agree with you on every single point. Mines a minor point but I'm bummed you can't play sonic and knuckles solo. I've always enjoyed it more than sonic 3 and it has my fave title screen too!
What Sega did here is the exact same thing that Rockstar did when they brought out the GTA trilogy: delisted the better versions of the games, and then made us pay an astronomical price for objectively worse versions. If that's not a scumbag move, I don't know what is. And I know the higher-ups are responsible, because Simon Tomley already said his piece on Twitter
I like Origins. I'm having a lot of fun with it. It is, however, very unpolished. It would be a total shame if they don't patch it soon. The classic titles deserve better.
Another thing I really didn't like about this collection is once you complete the campaign and choose that save file again, it just brings you to the final stage instead of giving the option to choose whatever stage you want. Except for Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Hopefully that can be addressed in a patch because even the mobile versions had that option.
@@danield.8233 I know. But you shouldn’t have to input a code every time you want to select a level. If you beat the game, you should be able to pick whatever level you like without having to input a code.
I'm going to cut and paste what I said on another channel. Great video. You broke my heart as a classic Sonic fan, but still a great video. Thank the heavens I still have Sonic Jams on the Sega Saturn. Sonic 1 in Sonic Generations. Sonic 1 and 2 in Sega's Mega Drive collection, and Sonic 1, 2, 3, S&K, and CD on the Xbox. And I still have the original Sonic CD for the Sega CD (although I don't have the console anymore). All that said. Looking at the gameplay of the original Sonic games, with him bouncing off items in the stages, falling into tubes and piping zipping and looping in the inner walls of a stage to reappear elsewhere, breakable walls and grounds with secret areas, waterslides, snowboarding, swinging, boost pads, springs, and other items throwing sonic into high speeds, and robotic enemies with the animals in them that actually attack you, at least ONE carnival style, or cool thematic circus style stages with very creative and inspiring obstacles, and above all, you can actually EXPLORE the stages! You can find powerups, and extra lives hidden everywhere! The ONLY 3D Sonic game that features these legacy gameplay features of the 2D Sonic games is Sonic Adventure 1. Maybe that's why I seem to keep replaying SA1 over and over more than any of the other 3D games. They did away (In my opinion) with all the gameplay that defined the Sonic that I loved after Yuji Naka left Sega. All you get now is so much boosting and rail grinding. ZERO stage explorations, uninspired humanoid looking orange robots to just blast through, and you cant enjoy the background environment that's just blurred for high speeds. And even if you stop, there's nothing worthwhile to explore. No hidden powerups to collect. Instead you customize Sonic's loadout before a stage starts (?????!!) by purchasing power upgrades (WTF)?! I'm speaking mostly on Sonic Generations and Unleashed, since I've given up on 3D Sonic after that. They weren't horrible games, they just wasn't my style of Sonic games. Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes are close seconds with the legacy gameplay (I'll give Heroes the closer nod) but still very, very distant from what SA1 achieved.
The idea of remastering the classics with a bunch of extra content and extra elements and cool stuff is like guaranteed success and they couldn’t even do that right somehow
The problem is Classic Mode is marketed as "playing the games as they were originally released", but in the original Sonic 1, Sonic couldn't spindash. I agree with Sam that Classic Mode should've been emulated roms of the original Genesis & CD versions while Anniversary Mode was the Retro Engine versions.
AIR doesn't need the Steam version of Sonic 3, any S3&K rom will do. This shouldn't be kept from people like it's some dirty secret, SEGA took down the only legal way to buy the rom when they took Sonic 3 down from Steam, so I say download without guilt. While you're at it, look for the latest versions of the decomps of S1 and 2, they added the drop dash and insta shield.
Headcannon were not happy about it, despite their responsibility but SEGA rushed it, (SEGA will get the blame not Headcannon) it seem like they still haven’t learn their lessons and when they keep repeating history (or more likely keep rushing game in productions) they’re doom to fail For S3&K they should keep Micheal Jackson OST or let Tee Lopes his version of S3&K OST
13:55 Wasn't Knuckles always playable in the Christian Whitehead version of Sonic 1? I remember going through the secret areas they added in Marble Zone specifically for him if you climb the walls in the right areas.
I got this collection for Sonic 3 and Knuckles and I stick by my choice for getting it. For me, I can look past the little things and see that this game collection is still the games, They're still the classics and despite the bugs I've enjoyed it from the start.
Agreed. I never played much of the classic Sonic games so this was really good for me. I enjoyed it a lot, however I can see and understand the flaws. It’s very unfortunate and I do hope it gets fixed, but I do really love this game still.
@@DankyKang96 no. i literally just like the game??? I was born in 2002 and didn't play the classic games until around 2015 2016??? So I have NO nostalgic connection to these games???
Very wonderful review overall. I am glad that you gave the game both positive and negative but in a fair, constructed criticism without the obvious hate or blunt like some people would usually do when they think of a Sonic game. Lets all hope SEGA see this video so that they can show to the higher ups to fix the glaring issues Sonic Origins is facing right now
Yeap now I know why Headcannon was very mad at Sega for releasing this collection in the state that it's in right now. They gave Sega access to very good versions of these games and Sega just crap all over them almost like they don't give a damn. This collection should had been an easy slam dunk on day one, hopefully they patch it soon. This is just unacceptable.
Sonic fans: "It's impossible to mess up the Genesis classics, they may be old games but at least we'll get a good Sonic release for once" Sega: "hold my derpy Sonic popsicle"
They had the perfect opportunity to use the ORIGINAL prototype music for the stages, and the UNUSED song for Super/Hyper Sonic. I agree that they blew it.
I didnt run into a lot of bugs with my playthrough. The only thing was I jumped into a Super emerald ring and i just got booted out before i could even try the special stage. As for me I am very happy that I can play all 4 classic games on my switch. And I have never beaten Sonic 3&K before so i was very excited. And I beat it 100% with all 3 characters. I love 3&k easily my 2nd favorite Sonic game right after Mania. Only thing that sucks is the music is different which Sega really, REALLY needs to get the rights to. I dont understand why they cant get the rights. It just doesnt make any sense. They cant be asking for to much money. And I guarantee if it was money that was the issue the fanbase itself would throw in money just to have the o.g soundtrack.
I’m upset about the original 3 & K MJ music not being in the game, the prototype versions aren’t as good and don’t fit as well Plus the prototype music they used while fine on their own aren’t as good and don’t fit as well Plus the prototype music they used is worse than the original prototype music Why can’t they get this issue sorted out so they can use the release versions, these versions don’t fit as well and the tone and feeling isn’t the same at all. IK there are still versions with the original music and origins will have mods on pc (and the music is online) but still it’s not ideal I am at least glad CD still lets you select the soundtrack versions Also I wish they had included other games as well as have other options like playing 3 or sonic and knuckles on their own and maybe a few more modes or something (perhaps even a few more characters even as just skins) This is all on top of issue of the games having issues of them not all playing exactly the same Also yeah the tails jumping in 2 is an issue and idk why it is cause it wasn’t an issue in the original Sonic 3 and knuckles does sound very off like the sound is muffled And the change in super sonic music is annoying too Yeah the pixels are blurry and that is annoying Tails getting stuck is very annoying
We all know SEGA never stop listen to themselfs and not listen to their fans. They are always rushing things up end it up releasing games in the wrong way and we are pointing fingers to blame the responsable. I guess they never learn the same old mistake ever since Sonic 06 to Colors Ultimate. We only hope they dont make one more mistake in Frontiers. At this point we still think they also made a mistake of firing Roger Craig Smith from Sonic Team. We're losing it lads.....
You should've given a shoutout to Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute and Sonic CD Restored. They're essentially Sonic 3 AIR but for the decompilations of the Christian Whitehead remakes, and they are AMAZING! They even include a MUCH more accurate Drop Dash without the directional lock from Origins, and CD even has Knuckles playable as well as exlcusively having a playable Amy! These versions along with Sonic 3 AIR almost bring Sonic Origins to shame and I hope SEGA can fix this because I truly wanted Origins to be my go-to for these games. Until then, I'll happily continue to play these fan projects on my modded Nintendo Switch! (Thanks to @heyjoeway for porting the decompilations and Sonic 3 AIR to Switch with full mod support!)
It shouldn't be that surprising that Knuckles wasn't added into Sonic CD. It was the first of these remasters and he simply wasn't there in he 2011 release (with Tails being featured instead). He was however already playable in Sonic 1 on mobile, which had the benefit of releasing later. Nothing was gained or lost here, although it would have been a nice addition. Also, the roll lock wasn't necessarily a problem before the drop dash. It's just a bad fit with that drop dash since it makes the ability more unwieldy than it was meant to be.
Here’s the kicker! The hidden palace tweeted out saying “hey Sega! We are more than willing to rip the sonic 3 prototype tracks FOR YOU!” Sega should let them…
I hope these reviews show Sega that rushing Stealth's team and forcing another Senoue Massicre onto us, wasn't cool. This game was an easy win and they managed to screw that up too. The fact that there's still people trusting them to make some awesome open-zone 3D game, is astounding. The fans are truly Sonic's life support. If not for fans doing everything Sega's incapable of, Sonic would've long died by now
That's why it's justified to be concern with Sonic Frontiers. Sega already has Christian Whitehead versions of these classic games in Origins and even a new Stealth version by Headcanon for 3 and Knuckles. Sonic Origins is already set up to be one of THE definitive versions if not the definitive versions of these games, yet Sega still manage to put their claws to somehow ruin it. Hopefully Sega allows Headcannon to patch the games in Origins to fix the glitches and polish it up. Tails not able to fly automatically up to Sonic after off-screen in Sonic 1 and 2 in Origins is pretty unacceptable.
@@retrofan4963 I agree with every bit of this. If I weren't poor and had a PC I wouldn't have bothered buying Origins. We have the best versions :) fans made them. Christian Whitehead and Stealth started with the best fan games, made Mania and fought Sega throughout that, and now Sega just, treats them as bad as they treat Sonic. They literally don't care...and that's why fans have been Sonic's life support the last decade. He'd be long dead without the dedicated fans.
Sam, I love your review and honestly I agree with most of it. I think one thing though that should've been brought up is the ridiculousness of the requirements to run this game. The new menu is cool and seeing all the islands in 3D is absolutely amazing, however is it worth shutting people out who can't run the menu from being able to play the collection? A friend of mine who has a 10 year old laptop can't play the game because he doesn't meet the minimum specs. And while it sounds like a personal problem at first, it's actually very much Sega not taking into consideration a larger audience. At the end of the day, Origins is a collection of Sonic games that can run on a potato. The games themselves are not even a gig each, yet it requires you to have a decent spec'd machine? The menus use Hedgehog Engine 2, which explains why they look amazing, but also explains the needed headroom. I think that's very unacceptable. There's no way to play the new S3 remaster UNLESS you get Origins.
What sucks is that you can't play the steam releases of the sonic games. Why? Because now people can't play sonic 3 air and play the original games in a true classic way :/
Along with the bug fixes, I would love for them to add in character skins as DLC similar to Mania Plus that can be purchased with coins. After claiming everything in the museum, (which was unfortunately very disappointing since everything in this collection has been released in another collection in some form..) I still have 999 coins.. It'll never happen, because Sega, but yeah.
Well, luckily for me, I bought Sonic 3 & Knuckles before it was taken off of STEAM, but I haven’t finish playing it yet. But the fact that I got it at the last minute is cool.
I must admit the bit when the sound of Tails jumping was blocking out the sound of your voice made me laugh quite hard. Oh I don't mind the new Super Sonic Theme btw, if I was being totally honest the old one was really annoying where this one I find it easier to listen to but each to their own.
I honestly really liked Team Sonic Racing, I didn't think it was bad or needed any Update Patches, I'm really happy I got to play it and I'm Happy that Game Exists Sonic Colours : Ultimate was as good as the Wii Original back in 2010
Awesome review! Even though I enjoyed Origins, you can tell that there are so many bugs in the game that needs to be fixed & I hope that fix them pretty soon.
I'm so happy I managed to get the originals before they got delisted. They yet again rushed another sonic game AGAIN. Frontiers is literally their last chance to impress me. If it sucks, I'm done with this series
First, great video! I really enjoyed it & I agree that while the game isn't bad, it could have been done a little better. And second, the only thing I would disagree on is how you can play Sonic 3 AIR. I don't think you actually need a copy of Sonic 3 & Knuckles on Steam in order to play it. I already have AIR on my laptop & it runs perfectly well without the Steam version, which I don't have. Other than that, very good vid! :P
This was a fantastic review, Sam! However, even though I love this collection, I'm just as baffled as you are on why they would still rush another sonic game for the millionth time and not learn from their mistakes as Sega said they would.
Awesome review, Sam! I’m kinda on the same page with you, yes, I’m having SO much fun with this collection, especially S3&K, but they definitely need to iron out those bugs (the Tails one specifically). I don’t find the new music bad, just forgettable if anything. Again, amazing review, and I seriously hope Sega patches this game soon
This is so disappointing. I had no idea that the music changed in Sonic 3. Carnival night and Launch Pad zone were some of my favorites... I can live with that. But the bugs... and other issues that where mentioned and I heard about... I canceled my pre-order. I was really looking forward to this. I do have other ways to play the teams, so do big deal.. but still. SEGA almost had my money for this one.
One thing I think most people wouldn't notice is that you actually still can put the spin dash off in the level select of Sonic 1 in Classic mode but still sucks because not many people would get the idea to go to the level select screen.
This was a well thought out review. I am not a long time Sonic fan who didn't grew up with these titles. But, you laid out excellent points with the game.
Those who say Sonic 2 happens before CD is forgetting the fact that Naoto Ohshima wasn't involved with Sonic 2 and CD is the direct continuation of sonic 1 because tails is in the hidden files of CD saying see you next game implying his first debut sonic 2.
But Ian Flynn himself even said it made more sense that CD would be after 3 in his bumblecast so I am taking his word over Sega who never cared about continuity for Sonic at all
Thank you for this review. For directly calling out the issues that shouldn’t exists, and need to be fixed sooner rather then later. But also pointing out effort cool changes. We be lucky if half of them are fixed. Glad I hold off. I hate sloppy high priced releases.
I feel you on Sonic 2. My first video game ever, and the soundtrack gives me the feels! In fact, I'm working on remaking that soundtrack because I love it so much. And I appreciate your review - very thorough, cracked me up, and my thoughts exactly!
Fun Fact about Sonic 2 in Origins, if you failed to get your 5th or 6th emerald say in Chemical Plant and don’t feel like using your coins, you can restart the zone and try again also the emeralds you contain by far are still there. You can get Super Sonic in Emerald Hill Act 1 if you want to. I did it out of curiosity and it worked.
The visual differences don't mean much to me personally as I have very bad eyesight and physically can't notice them a lot of the time, and the glitches haven't been too bad for me so far (on Switch), but I really do hope they patch things so everyone can enjoy these games to their full potential. I'm not expecting a patch though...
Short story long, Sonic 1 (16-Bit) is Sonic 1, Part 1. Sonic 1 (8-Bit), is Sonic 1, Part 2. Sonic 2 (8-Bit) is Sonic 2, Part 1. Sonic 2 (16-Bit) is Sonic 2, Part 2. Sonic CD is Sonic 2, Part 3. Sonic 3 is Sonic 3, Part 1. Sonic & Knuckles is Sonic 3, Part 2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles/Sonic 3 Complete is the full version of Sonic 3. And Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus is the true Sonic 4. Sonic's first robotic doppelganger was Mecha Sonic Mark 1 in Sonic 2 (8-Bit), Sonic's second robotic doppelganger was Mecha Sonic Mark 2 in Sonic 2 (16-Bit), Sonic's third robotic doppelganger was Metal Sonic in Sonic CD and Sonic's final robotic doppelganger was Mecha Sonic Mark 3 in the Sonic 3 series.
I also thought the reason for all this extra art work in the trailer was so the cut scenes in story mode would show sonic going from one stage to the next. But you know Sega, always doing the bare minimum for the fans!
Uh okay, uh we're like tired of you not being funny.

Perfectly done. I really hope Sega keeps an ear open to you going forward. You perfectly laid out everything the game needs to earn its namesake.

XD
Thank you for sharing your honest review to Origins, Sam.
Patches won't change the reception, colors ultimate is still remembered as a buggy mess despite most of the bugs being patched out, Sega hasn't handled Sonic with respect in years now
Why would you feel bad for a company that just wants your money?
@@gunman8452 Yep. Even if a game that ends up being broken and bad get patches later to fix the problems, the damage is already done
@Gunman yeah colors ultimate was soo terrible so origins is alright I really loved this game so freaking much but the things that are irritating is the super sonic theme changing to a sucky 4th version prototype but the game is still okay as usual
I'm not shedding a single tear for SEGA, they're doing this to themselves
We should say "momentum based gameplay" that includes slopes, air, wall running, and more. But, the point is that it specifies that we want gameplay more closely BASED around momentum.
SEGA not caring about the quality of its most popular I.P. Sonic is definitely a recurring theme! The fact that ugly sonic was even allowed to be made by paramount in the first place is prove that Sega is careless and is often incompetent with quality control
Sonic 1's weird jump movement can actually be fixed in-game. It requires entering level select, enabling sonic 2 and 3 items, and that gives sonic the insta-shield, and loosens his movements a bit
On that note, why does level select have to be used to enable things like elemental shields and super sonic in sonic 1?
I agree. Those should just be accessible from the start
@@josephhinojosa4715 I think those options are best for new players, so they really shouldn't be hidden away
On another note, why did only Sonic 1 get this?
@@NeonIceyy I think it's because the elemetal shields and insta-shield conpliment Sonic 1 level & enemy designs more than the other games.
@@josephhinojosa4715 Still, there's no reason for them to not be in Sonic 2 and CD as well. Including the extra Special Stage and the Super Peel-Out.
Thank you for keeping it real, Sam. With recent example how Mario and Rabbids is turning out with the quality and passion even in marketing, Sega Japan needs to aim the bar higher. If they want to be a successful business, they need to return to the basics.
Why i never get any of those bugs besides tails bounce. Seems like most problems coming from PC version
I think the issues that NEED to be fixed, stuff that even casual players can spot are:
-Fix the Tails glitch in Sonic 2
-Fix whatever is going on in Marble Garden Zone Act 2 24:29
-and fix the blur
…and probably Carnival Night Zone’s music because holy hell!
And I know the higher-ups are responsible, because Simon Tomley already said his piece on Twitter
if someone wants to mod the original rom then they habe to pirate it instead of actually purchasing it, it's so stupid
There is a code that should allow you to choose a stage for sonic 1 & 2
@@danield.8233 I know. But you shouldn’t have to input a code every time you want to select a level. If you beat the game, you should be able to pick whatever level you like without having to input a code.
This is my main issue right here, glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels this way. Kills replayability for 1,2 and CD
The idea of remastering the classics with a bunch of extra content and extra elements and cool stuff is like guaranteed success and they couldn’t even do that right somehow
all they had to do was delay the damn game. precisely NOBODY ELSE cared about it being in time for the anniversary
@@Seiyol SEGA did. That's somebody.
I don't really get why anyone would complain about having a spindash in Sonic 1. "Ah yea! I love having less movement abilities!"
Headcannon were not happy about it, despite their responsibility but SEGA rushed it, (SEGA will get the blame not Headcannon) it seem like they still haven’t learn their lessons and when they keep repeating history (or more likely keep rushing game in productions) they’re doom to fail
For S3&K they should keep Micheal Jackson OST or let Tee Lopes his version of S3&K OST
13:55 Wasn't Knuckles always playable in the Christian Whitehead version of Sonic 1? I remember going through the secret areas they added in Marble Zone specifically for him if you climb the walls in the right areas.
As an unlockable, yes.
In the original Genesis version as well
@edmpunkfire7793 No? The original version only let's you play the Blue Spheres. You can't play as Knuckles in Genesis version.
You mean they’ve got you by the nostalgia receptors and you’ll buy literally anything they put out
@@DankyKang96 no.
i literally just like the game??? I was born in 2002 and didn't play the classic games until around 2015 2016??? So I have NO nostalgic connection to these games???

@@EnergyTheFoxProductions of course it does
Very wonderful review overall. I am glad that you gave the game both positive and negative but in a fair, constructed criticism without the obvious hate or blunt like some people would usually do when they think of a Sonic game. Lets all hope SEGA see this video so that they can show to the higher ups to fix the glaring issues Sonic Origins is facing right now
Your reviews keep getting better and better, can't wait to see what you have to say about Frontiers when it comes out, keep it up Sam!
Remember, you can always emulate the delisted original ROMs. It is always morally correct.
Best course of action: Wait for the game to go on sale with patches. Better yet, wait till the patches have been ironed out with DENUVO removed.
I'm still waiting for a physical version
@@AkameGaKillfan777 There's No Hoping Waiting I Doubt They're Putting This On disc
Eh, I was already going to skip out on this one anyway. I'll wait and see how Frontiers really turns out.
Sometimes I kinda think that they put less effort into Sonic games these days is cuz they know the fans will just fix them for free
18:15 "WILL YOU STOP!!!"
Sonic fans: "It's impossible to mess up the Genesis classics, they may be old games but at least we'll get a good Sonic release for once"
Sega: "hold my derpy Sonic popsicle"
They had the perfect opportunity to use the ORIGINAL prototype music for the stages, and the UNUSED song for Super/Hyper Sonic. I agree that they blew it.
I heard nothing but genuine facts and honesty here!
SEGA please patch the flaws ASAP!
I really hope they fix the problems since you're like an ambassador and they should listen to you.
I’m upset about the original 3 & K MJ music not being in the game, the prototype versions aren’t as good and don’t fit as well
Plus the prototype music they used while fine on their own aren’t as good and don’t fit as well
Plus the prototype music they used is worse than the original prototype music
Why can’t they get this issue sorted out so they can use the release versions, these versions don’t fit as well and the tone and feeling isn’t the same at all.
IK there are still versions with the original music and origins will have mods on pc (and the music is online) but still it’s not ideal
I am at least glad CD still lets you select the soundtrack versions
Also I wish they had included other games as well as have other options like playing 3 or sonic and knuckles on their own and maybe a few more modes or something (perhaps even a few more characters even as just skins)
This is all on top of issue of the games having issues of them not all playing exactly the same
Also yeah the tails jumping in 2 is an issue and idk why it is cause it wasn’t an issue in the original
Sonic 3 and knuckles does sound very off like the sound is muffled
And the change in super sonic music is annoying too
Yeah the pixels are blurry and that is annoying
Tails getting stuck is very annoying
Absolutely incredible review Sam. I'm impressed with how honestly you portray your opinions. Keep up the good work.
"Firing Roger" Tf You Talking About
People: The game is so bad
Also people: Buys game excepting good game
12:01 - I'm waiting for the Sonic Origins race, coward 😝
I hope they made a hack to add Sonic to Knuckles Chaotix someday.
I enjoyed it actually. I bought it on pc and got the mod for the mj music. It’s was smooth sailing from there!
Guys Sonic Origins, the digital deluxe edition is now $9 off on the PS Store and Nintendo eShop.
We are more than willing to rip the sonic 3 prototype tracks FOR YOU!” Sega should let them…
I really hope they soon find a way fix up the problems and issues with origins but overall great review Sam 👍
@@retrofan4963 And Now Tails Is Fix
Excellent review! Those were my exact reactions to the music as well!
You're review is 💯 on point. Another thing I wish Sega did with origins is playable Amy,Metal and being able to team up Sonic & Knuckles
Origins is a great collection it has a few problems but I can ignore most of those cause it’s not like there stopping me from playing the game.
Bro it was foolish of me to think we’d have the good sonic 3 and knuckles music and that Amy would be playable in cd as a new thing
Sam, Knuckles being playable in Sonic 1 wasn't new for Sonic Origins. He was playable in the mobile port.
Actually, Knuckles was in the Mobile port of Sonic 1
Well, luckily for me, I bought Sonic 3 & Knuckles before it was taken off of STEAM, but I haven’t finish playing it yet. But the fact that I got it at the last minute is cool.
Glad I held off purchasing this one.
I must admit the bit when the sound of Tails jumping was blocking out the sound of your voice made me laugh quite hard. Oh I don't mind the new Super Sonic Theme btw, if I was being totally honest the old one was really annoying where this one I find it easier to listen to but each to their own.
The biggest flaw: No & Knuckles mode
Nice video. Subscribed.
For what it's worth I did really enjoy Origins.
I honestly really liked Team Sonic Racing, I didn't think it was bad or needed any Update Patches, I'm really happy I got to play it and I'm Happy that Game Exists
Sonic Colours : Ultimate was as good as the Wii Original back in 2010
Awesome review!
14:03 I'm glad this confirms where sonic cd takes place in the timeline.
Great and informative review bud! I died laughing at the Super Sonic - Sonic 4 theme comparison lol
19:11 congratulation eggman join the team
I don't even know if you remember me (Judgment313), but I'm popping in to commend you on a great review. It's a pretty honest review all around 👍🏽
One thing I think most people wouldn't notice is that you actually still can put the spin dash off in the level select of Sonic 1 in Classic mode but still sucks because not many people would get the idea to go to the level select screen.
I knew about Amy's Tarot Cards from Sonic Chronicles of all things.
One of her skills in that game was called Tarot Draw.
This was a well thought out review. I am not a long time Sonic fan who didn't grew up with these titles. But, you laid out excellent points with the game.
I'm glad that most of the issues mentioned in this video are already fixed and improved in plus, but rip sonic 3 ost
27:55 There literally are IDW comic covers in the museum.
Those who say Sonic 2 happens before CD is forgetting the fact that Naoto Ohshima wasn't involved with Sonic 2 and CD is the direct continuation of sonic 1 because tails is in the hidden files of CD saying see you next game implying his first debut sonic 2.
Sega hired 2 teams to make a continuation. I guess cd plays before 2 because tails isn't there
But Ian Flynn himself even said it made more sense that CD would be after 3 in his bumblecast so I am taking his word over Sega who never cared about continuity for Sonic at all
