  • Before jumping in to buying a family milk cow a few years back, one of the main questions we were asking is what will this cost? Having a family milk cow looks dreamy on social media. But what costs are involved - both in dollars and time - and is it worth it? We break down those questions from our experience of owing a family milk cow for 2.5 years.
    Equipment we use:

I like your focus on doing things simply on your farmstead. I think that's what makes it seem like I could do this too, without needing allllll the expensive equipment. And yes, absolutely it would be a lifestyle change!

Add the amount of compost you generate which makes the soil better every time the land is being grazed. In other cases you compost and use it on vegetable patch as addition to the soil. For 6 liters of milk a day, you would be needing at least 4 goats.

Just a suggestion if you are into alot of cheese making then perhaps get a dairy buffalo. Mozarella is original made from buffalo milk. The fat percentage is 10% in dairy buffalo. I heard in North Eastern USA there are farms that deals with buffaloes. The breeds like Murrah and other Asian breeds produce 20 to 21 liters of milk in a day in dual milking sessions.
They are similar to the cows but they produce less milk than the cow but 9 - 10 % fat in it. Perhaps if you are thinking of expanding then a dairy buffalo with the family cow would be great. Buffalo breed from Italy and in India. The size of the buffalo is same as your milk cow.

That's so interesting! Never would have thought of buffalo being the same size as a cow but we'll need to look into it!

Are buffalo as nice as cows… in terms of mellow temperament?

Yes! We have a hodge podge of premier one fencing that we found used. I think the main one's we have are called electrostop. Not sure if they still make that line. Thanks for watching!

Good video, but I don't think you realize how often you cut your hisband off or how you talk over him.
