- This has been one of my favorite midge pupa patterns for the last 20 years, or so. It does a great job of imitating the large, bulbous thorax and head of the midge pupae as they start to emerge to become adults.
Thanks for the history lesson on tying materials for this midge! 😂
Seriously, great video as usual. Love the old school flies!!! Keep ‘em coming please. 👍🏼
Hahaha. No one would believe how creative we had to get to tie flies 25 years ago! 😂
We’ve fished this pattern for many years, and the fish never seem to get tired of it! We say “if you want to get lucky, you better have a Trojan in your wallet”!! Get pattern Jude!!
You had the best tag line Doc! 😂
I’m gonna try this this weekend! Thanks for sharing bro!
Great! Good luck!
thats really cool i do something similar with putting small utc wire in micro tubing and get almost the same color as this with the sculpin olive wire color will have to tie some of these up for sure thanks
That’s an awesome idea! I bet your midges slay on the river!
Trojan Midge FTW!!!!!!!!!!!
And you know thiiiiisssss!
cool technique, I think the rotary cutter is key to make consistent cuts of the material. Is size 20 the best size for the San Juan pupa that you are imitating?
That’s a GREAT question because I think people use flies that are smaller than they need to be. 85% of my small flies are tied in size 22. This one I like in size 18-22
