Shawn, I did not know your music before I saw you live at the Blue Note, now I’m hooked, really interesting melodies and instrumentals. The wonderful ‘and more’ Brass band was truly epic. I recognize the Shakuhashi player !
The fact that you guys can achieve sounds that sound like they could only be emulated through computers so effectively live like this is so amazing to me. You guys are genuinely awesome. Cannot wait to hear more
@@LavaAndDiamond I know, but the fact that a lot of it is done by hand is extremely impressive to me. Just the fact that they can seamlessly match the computers that are involved lol
@@LavaAndDiamond Well yeah, they're not getting those sample sounds by rubbing twigs together, but what my man obviously meant was that they are able to actually perform these advanced tunes without getting distracted by the complicated rhythms or the fantastic layering and blending of otherworldly sounds together. Most people couldn't compose this through a DAW, while these guys are playing it live like it's no big deal. Pretty impressive.
@@taylorhirschmusic You can see they're running a single backing track on Adam's laptop using ableton live. It's likely the tune was composed electronically, which would allow them to dial in complex polyrhythms, and later just learn the parts, record them using live instruments, and then drop these specific tracks out for performances to play on top of the backing track. It's a cool tune in its own rite, but IMO such a reliance on a single backing track defining the character of the performance flies in the face of the virtuosity clearly prized by these musicians.
@@xtan150 Yeah I caught the Ableton track as well, the only thing is that we don't actually know which sounds are and aren't curated specifically into that track vs samples that are generated using effects gear, or pads the drummer hits that then carry out their own pre-programmed roles, or anything else that would require temporal awareness to use live. Sprinkle that in with the skillful lines and layered polyrhythms and it can become difficult to keep track of everything as you're playing. I think Adam might have released a video a while ago on the debate between using programmed material vs au natural. You might enjoy that, it seems like it might be right up your alley!
@@beanzthumbz I wonder whether they wrote that melody first then used it as the click track; hearing 19 clicks per beat (whether 6+6+7 or whatever) would drive me insane! Also, konnakol (South India's rhythmic counting system, I don't know what you know about it) helps me a lot with this kind of music!
"Threshold" is the most gloriously strange song I have ever heard. My brain literally doesn't know what to do with it. How to groove. Yet why do I find myself rocking in 6/8? WEIRD.
Me too!!! I just like naturally account for that last sliver of a beat somehow and it’s not strange. It’s so cool that weird time signatures like this can groove - like it doesn’t have to be some weird only theoretical thing cuz IT WORKS
In many cultures, music is not subdivided in equally spaced beats, but the beats are "flexible" and follow some pattern like "long-long-short". In this case, the 19-tuplets are subdivided as 6-6-7, so it feels like some kind of "short-short-long" pattern. And it's only natural for us to groove on it 🙂
When you're paying for studio time, you want to spend the least amount of time possible on not recording. Cable management can do one if you haven't hired it out for multiple days lol
Unbelievable !!! This is THE BEST NEW MUSIC I've heard in years! It's prog without being metal, kinda like Animals As Leaders with no guitars (if you can imagine that!) AWESOME!
fuuuuuuuuck bro this music is so incredible. the way you guys can groove so hard in these intricate beats with so many different, intriguing sounds is beyond words. thank you for your music!!! (had the pleasure of seeing you guys in Cleveland on Adam's birthday! you guys were by far the coolest live performance I've ever seen)
Ok, having watched both versions a few times now, I have to say I dig watching the performances in this video a tad better than the animated version! Ben's animation is incredible, and the highly mastered version of the song is superb, but the energy of this does it for me!
Sungazer has quickly become one of my favorite bands.I'm so glad you and Adam put a full-length album out. This is a fantastic song to start it off with.Your drumming is incredible.
This has gotta be a new favorite. Everything was excellent. I've never heard anything like it, and this has me super pumped for perihelion. Nice work guys!
This song is so beautiful. I was so mesmerized by the 33BPM video - using this track in the video completely caught my attention and gave me chills! Keep going!
I’ve listened to this song 20 times on Spotify, and watching this video was the first time I realized it’s actually a human playing on a bass. It’s insane.
I just found you guys this week and I'm absolutely blown away. This album has been on repeat. Incredible drumming, man! Can't wait to see you guys with Plini and Zytecki next year!
I love this song, and I've heard Adam play some neat things, but that part beginning around 2:00.. what the hell. I've been thinking that was only a pluck synth sample arpeggiated, how the hell is Adam playing that on bass for like two straight minutes?? I had no idea he was that good.
Ever wondered what a jazz saxophonist sounds like on a shakuhachi? 3:43 - 3:46 (Really love this track tho as well!! That shaku-intro is beautiful, the chorus honestly really gets to me.)
Sick!! Saw you guys in Seattle last night. Great show! Sound was not so good though, this captures the subtlety of your arrangements and playing much better. The energy was great though and you guys rocked it!!! So glad you came to our town, please do again!! Many fans here!
Pre-save the album here! bit.ly/2XHMUzc
does presaving benefit you guys in some way that saving it after it comes out doesn't? just curious, I haven't heard of this
It helps our 1st week numbers, which may influence algorithms (in theory). But otherwise, any stream, any time helps!

You guys are gonna run out of subdivisions sooner or later.
I don't know... there's infinitely many numbers to choose from...
but they will someday reach the threshold
Actually they already explained they've just ran out lol, in this video

@@notenc1387 that's kind of the point of this song! this is one of the subdivision thresholds

What a historic year…
Zappa would love this
I hope Dweezil sees this!
Yeah exactly what i was thinking
Also Dave Brubeck

I am so hyped for this new Album
Never heard 19-tuplets sound so musical... in fact, I don't think I've ever heard 19s! If this continues on from Drunk's 9s, are 29-tuplets next? :P
it could also be 2n+1 => 39
@@MrTheSmoon Oh, very good! That's much more like it!
Wait wuuuuuut these are 19-tups? I thought they were just quintuplets... How did you even count that listening to the video?
Holy shit you're right, in the bass fills bit at around 2:00 you can hear adam playing 6+6+7 groupings. Very cool

I can either feel it in very slow 4/4 or oddly enough in 9/8 🤨
That cable management though...

Zac Zinger in the line up is a sure winner! The shakuhachi blends perfectly in the piece!
Edit: typo
Agreed! Such a wonderful timbre
It's Zac Zinger*
@@TuTosRARE OMG /u\ thanks for the heads up! corrected
The contrast between the fast, almost chaotic lines of the bass and the slow, melodic lines of the shakuhachi is really cool. Love this sound.

Big difference between this and the animation version. Listen to the sound of the cymbals. This is a very raw mix.
