Jamie you are a great teacher, far better than others i have tried to follow. One point i would like to add that my first teacher pointed out is that your guitar is correctly setup, i first started with a Squire with an action so high that even my teacher struggled to play it! Thanks for another great video for beginners like myself.

After 3 years of playing I still consider myself a beginner, and as many others, I struggle with the F chord. I have a song suggestion. “For what it’s worth by Buffalo Springfield.” I have watched others on RUclips but I like your teaching style so I thought I would ask. I’m taking your advice and will stop searching around the internet, so many different teachers, some not so good! Thank you
It varies according to the player. Set it at the lowest speed -- for my metronome that's 40 bpm -- and see if you can follow it. If yes, inch it up a couple of notches and try again. Keep doing that until you start to stumble, then keep it at that tempo for awhile. BTW I don't remember what setting I used for the video, sorry.
Wow, I could relate to some of these and honestly I realize my mistakes. My biggest mistake is that "Death grip" which I can't get over.. Can you please give a few advice or say anything at all as to how can I correct this mannerism ? But anyway, It's always been a great help watching your tutorials. Thanks :)
Jamie I just found you. I think I can maybe learn from you. Most of the teachers I have looked at have started easy and quickly escalate beyond my ability to follow. where shall I start?
Hi Jamie! I have a bad habit of tensing my right shoulder and forearm when I play very fast rhythms, like Celtic or Appalachian music- I didn't realize I was doing this until I complained to my chiropractor about my right arm & shoulder hurting all the time, & he asked me what I was doing with it, lol! I try to physically drop that shoulder & relax the tension in my forearm when I get going fast & realize I'm tensing up, but I'm really struggling with this! Do you have any suggestions to break this habit beyond what I'm currently doing? Also, I'm fine with MAKING barre cords, but tend to avoid keys where it's ALL barre cords, because after a short while, my hand starts cramping( which makes it hard to keep holding them) and sometimes doesn't want to uncurl to grab an open cord fast enough! I bought a Daddario finger strength trainer, but it didn't help as much as I had hoped it would. I have issues with my hands from almost 30 years of grooming dogs for a living, & that's probably the cause, but any suggestions you have will be appreciated! I use my capo a lot, but feel like I'm cheating myself because I would be a better musician if I just play in those keys that I'm avoiding. Sometimes I will just run thru the diatonic chords, both major and minor, in those keys, & force myself thru the pain, I have a few simple songs( like Tir Na Nog, by the Celtic Women) that are ALL barre Chords( mainly because of the key I play them in) that I make myself practice with- I'm not sure what else to try, except just keep doing it! Or use a capo! 🥰💖
Capos are not bad, they're great tools. I'd avoid songs that are all barre chords unless you're playing an electric or an acoustic with low action and light gauge strings. Playing through the pain is a bad idea because you could be injuring yourself. Your chiropractor may be able to help you. Being conscious of a tense shoulder is a good step. Other than that you may need a health practitioner to guide you.
I am a perpetual beginner and do not understand how Keys and Scales are used. Should I just forget all that and just learn strumming patterns and finger patterns and chords and practice practice practice for now?
Most beginners are I know are more excited about learning individual songs and the chords, strums and picking patterns that go with them. Learning scales can be fun too but I don't recommend them for someone just starting out.
I got another advice: Keep your guitar close by. Don't pack it away. It must be close enough to grab it, then you feel like it. (Cat in the closet at 4:20?)
