U can push up on the back part of clip using a screwdriver or something similar and pull back at same time thatll allow u to slide clip off or u can squeeze from behind using needle nose pliers
I don't know where you got your torque specs from but if you look at the top of your oil filter assembly cap (opposite the treaded end) it says right on the part "Tighten To 25 N•m". 25 Newton meters is equal to 18 ft.lbs.
It came with the oil filter, yes, i know the housing had the torque spec, but could of been a revised torque spec so i decided to go with the torque spec that came with the filter.
@@backyardchevy328 Didn't you use an STP oil filter? Why would you trust STP to give you the torque specs for a Toyota oil filter cap? That makes zero sense. That's something that maybe STP mistakenly printed on the box because they print it on all the packaging for all their spin on filters? Still 22 ft.lbs. I'm sure is fine. It's not enough to cause a problem. I commend you for using a torque wrench and making a great instructional video. Also IF you read the instructions that come with Toyota OEM filters, they say not to use a pick or screwdriver to remove the o-ring. Just so you know. I don't see a problem using a pick or small screwdriver but since you are instructing others maybe you should just mention that Toyota discourages that practice.
@@stevensevek6151 it was a paper that came with the o ring and yes it was stp..its like when u do a timing belt on a toyota camry..the timing belt set comes with revised instructions for the original spring to replace it with a newer spring, sometimes u get revisions..and since 22ft lbs isnt that much tighter than 18ft lbs..it wont affect it...im sure if i torque it to 18ft lbs and set it to 22ft lbs after i probably wont even get any movement from it.
Hi, backyard Chevy. Thanks for the post, very helpful. Two questions here. Do you think this technique would work on 2019 models? And what is being released when you open both “valves “? ( Is it oil coming out through both ends? )
Well on the 2019s i believe they got rid of the cartridge style filter, so itll be the standard spin on filter...u mean the oil drain bolt and the filter? Its oil through the drain bolt and oil thats held in the oil filter as well.
@@backyardchevy328 got it. I’ll have to check it out myself. And yes, that’s what I meant. I was wondering why oil passes through both ways instead of just one way, but I got it now lol. Oh and what kind of lubricant do you use for that second piece? The cap, I think.
@@writer46m72 well the oil passes through the filter and gets cleaned before running through the oil passages so that's why the oil is where that filter is as well...and i use the same oil that ur gonna put into the engine to lubricate the o ring
@@backyardchevy328 oh okay. When I first watched the video, it looked like you were using a white substance from that one cap. But when I looked again, it was just the color of the inside of the cap LOL. Thanks a bunch, man!

My 2014 Corolla is leaking a little bit of oils from the oil filter housing I think it might be that I have to replace the oil filter housing. This happened after I did my oils change
A footnote many of these cars do not have the original oil filter, they have been replaced with a full canister oil filter. This might be good information to have before purchasing an oil filter. I had to jack my car up just see what kind of oil filter was on it before I went out and bought one.
@@stevensevek6151 The point of my comment was to make sure you know which filter you need to buy before you drain your oil. My Toyota had the original filter rig replaced with a canister filter. So I continue to buy the canisters. To go back to original equipment I would have to buy the whole rigamarole that holds the old filters in place. You don't want to drain your oil to find out you have the wrong filter.
Very useful video :) I have a small problem, if you can help me I would appreciate: I have an Corolla from 2017, 1.6, valemantic, 132hp, 45.300 km on ODO. I bought this car second hand, from Germany. Recently I've made oil change - 5w-30 they put me. They said that this is the correct oil viscosity for car age and km on ODO I've seen that the owner manual preferred is 0w-20. I can used 5w-30, but after that to switch back to 0w-20. I'm living in Romania. Temepratures during the winter can go to -10 Celsius, to +35 Celsius in the summer Theoretically, they put correct oil for these conditions, but owner manual is recommending something else. Questions and concerns: They put the correct oil after all giving weather conditions? If I have right now 5w-30 it will affect my car? Should I switch back to the 0w-20 at the next oil change?
Well 0w-20 is thinner oil in colder weather..and in below freezing weather u want thinner oil so it can circulate better when u first start ur car..while a 5w-30 is slightly thicker in cold weather and better hotter weather performance than the 0w-20 the oil ranges for ur temperature both oil's can be used safely..and yes u can change back to 0w-20 if u prefer...i would also rather prefer to stay with the original 0w-20
@@backyardchevy328 Yesterday I was unable to remove the cap. it was too stuck. First time this happened, after 8 years. I think in the process I was also rounding the cap with the wrench. @@anthonydefex the best one ive found is the one i put in the description..it grabs it really well..i have been finding em overtightened..and normally its after coming from the dealer..not sure what torque spec theyre using but has to be much higher than it should be...hopefully the tool works great for you too..good luck🙂👍
I'm completely car illiterate but want to start by at least doing my own oil changes. Can you please tell me the tool(s?) used to do this? The thing to loosen and then to screw back on with toque is just a regular wrench or? Thank you
Definitely..i used a 3/8ths drive ratchet to loosen the bolt(the longer the ratchet the more leverage to loosen the bolt)...and it can tighten the bolt but to be accurate with the torque spec..youll wanna use a torque wrench u can get that in 3/8ths drive as well..if u have a local harbor freight..u can get all this there at a pretty good price with coupons..and u can either get a 3/8ths drive socket set to go with the ratchet, youll wanna get that 6 point 3/8ths drive also...and that filter wrench will work with the 3/8ths drive also so you should be good with those
Yea sadly i cropped it out while editing to make it shortly and didnt realize that i cut that part out too until it was posted...yes u wanna just click it back in place.
I didnt forget, just when cropping the video to shorten it..didnt notice that i cut out that part of the video..and once it was posted it was too late to add it in
lmfaoo i just did my girls car on this video saved me like 60$ total cost of items come out to 40$ depending on what you already have oil filter - 10$ full synthetic - 20$ (autozone sale) oil filter wrench - 10$ Question: does it matter which filter you use because they both fit (solid cap) & (soft filter) can you use both?
Well the main reason for a leak around filter would be if the o-ring wasnt installed in the right groove or if it tore cause it was installed dry....around the oil pan plug could be the gasket is missing or torn.
@@backyardchevy328 looked back at it and I guess I wasn't paying attention. I see the crush washer has been mushroomed in and i never noticed when I first began. I thought it was strange when it was hard removing the bolt. It was difficult to turn in the beginning. I will check back on the O ring and make sure that I put it in the right spot. I did lubricate it before putting on but you may be right on the location. Thanks again for the reply.
I was able to do the oil change to my car without a problem thanks to your video. By the way what are the blue napkins you used to wipe off the engine oil?
Thats awesome..so glad to hear it🙂..theyre blue shop towels they sell em by rolls best price for em are at home depot or costco now though everywhere else they seem to be doubled
The manual does say it is safe to use a higher viscosity in extreme load conditions and im sure higher temperature would apply to needing slightly thicker oil, but i would prefer to stick with the original unless it does stay around or near 40 degrees celcius most of the time.
If you really have to use a higher weight, then make sure it is synthetic. 0W20 only comes as a synthetic. Synthetic is far better for higher heat resistance, and better flow, which is necessary for a modern engine.
Unfortunately some places overtighten these and make it horrible for the next person who does em..i had the same issue on the toyota rav4..it ended up breaking the adapter on my breaker bar..and i had to use an impact gun to get it off, but the housing cracked in the process.
Negative couldn’t get it. The socket tool kept slipping I even used a screwdriver to put pressure on it so it wouldn’t slip but couldn’t get it loose. I even tried some of those filter plier/tong ended up snapping one of those lil tabs on the side of the housing. Oh well.
@@mrbogie4392 the tool keeps slipping? On regular oil filters i put a blue shop towel in between the tool and the oil filter so it can grip the corners better..maybe that might grip it enough
I wouldnt risk it...cause they can crack with enough pressure and if u can get the one i got it costed me 7.99 or so at oreillys itd be worth buying instead of risking it

@@dereksans178 the lower mark, itll dip into the oil in the oil pan leaving same mark on both sides..but as it travels up dipstick tube one side rubs against the tube showing more oil on the side that rubbed against it
Not for those oil filters since they are tightened using the tool...but there are some 2016 corollas that have the spin on type filters, those can be removed by hand in most cases as long as they werent tightened with a tool.
Its a pennzoil part number 19906. Most of the others they make are too thick and wont fit around filter housing without hitting up against the engine block.
Unfortunately on the rav4 where i had same problem..i had to use an impact gun to get it off..guess this is happening more often on these corollas as well..i had someone else comment the same problem a couple days ago on his corolla.

@@backyardchevy328
Didn't you use an STP oil filter?
You have one of the better videos on RUclips, very helpful thank you for uploading, Cheers.

My 2014 Corolla is leaking a little bit of oils from the oil filter housing I think it might be that I have to replace the oil filter housing. This happened after I did my oils change
Look for any cracks in the housing, if not, it could be the seal didnt sit properly all around and maybe got damaged
Very helpful. Could you tell me what tools are u using to change oil. I wanna buy them.
I used a 14mm socket, a 3/8 ratchet..and oil filter wrench this one might be a good choice amzn.to/2CQupyc
A footnote many of these cars do not have the original oil filter, they have been replaced with a full canister oil filter. This might be good information to have before purchasing an oil filter. I had to jack my car up just see what kind of oil filter was on it before I went out and bought one.
Definitely important step, especially before draining oil...thank you🙂
How do you know this? You are aware that in 2009 the Corolla was available with two different engines (and filters)?
@@stevensevek6151 The point of my comment was to make sure you know which filter you need to buy before you drain your oil.
My Toyota had the original filter rig replaced with a canister filter. So I continue to buy the canisters. To go back to original equipment I would have to buy the whole rigamarole that holds the old filters in place. You don't want to drain your oil to find out you have the wrong filter.
Very useful video :)
I have a small problem, if you can help me I would appreciate:
I have an Corolla from 2017, 1.6, valemantic, 132hp, 45.300 km on ODO. I bought this car second hand, from Germany.
Recently I've made oil change - 5w-30 they put me. They said that this is the correct oil viscosity for car age and km on ODO
I've seen that the owner manual preferred is 0w-20. I can used 5w-30, but after that to switch back to 0w-20.
I'm living in Romania. Temepratures during the winter can go to -10 Celsius, to +35 Celsius in the summer
Theoretically, they put correct oil for these conditions, but owner manual is recommending something else.
Questions and concerns:
They put the correct oil after all giving weather conditions?
If I have right now 5w-30 it will affect my car?
Should I switch back to the 0w-20 at the next oil change?
Well 0w-20 is thinner oil in colder weather..and in below freezing weather u want thinner oil so it can circulate better when u first start ur car..while a 5w-30 is slightly thicker in cold weather and better hotter weather performance than the 0w-20 the oil ranges for ur temperature both oil's can be used safely..and yes u can change back to 0w-20 if u prefer...i would also rather prefer to stay with the original 0w-20

Hi! I have the same car, and the filter is super tide! It’s my first time doing oil change in my Corolla! It’s normal to be super tide? Thanks
Its not normal, but lately the dealer has been overtightening em, before they would do it mainly on toyota rav4s but now its happening on corollas too
I have an oil leak around the oil filter housing and see a leak around the oil pan plug. Did I do something wrong? Too tight maybe? Same car as yours.
Well the main reason for a leak around filter would be if the o-ring wasnt installed in the right groove or if it tore cause it was installed dry....around the oil pan plug could be the gasket is missing or torn.

Backyard Chevy Thank you appreciate the response 👍
If you really have to use a higher weight, then make sure it is synthetic. 0W20 only comes as a synthetic. Synthetic is far better for higher heat resistance, and better flow, which is necessary for a modern engine.
