Final Assembly series part 3
We install more pony motor (donkey start) components including the fuel tank and main engine throttle. It is also time to install the firewall, floor pans and oil / temperature gauges. Overall, progress continues on the 1939 Cat D4 / RD4 agricultural crawler / dozer with a D4400 diesel engine. 4G9986 "Lil Lefty" has never been so much fun and fulfilling. I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.
We are operators pretending to be mechanics!
Thanks for watching!

Someone else commented on where you get the vintage looking wire, i am also wondering where you got it. I also am frustrated at times working on my D2 when you have to remove this thing, then remove another thing, then break something to just get to what you want to actually work on. But for some reason i think its a fun hobby or addiction ....whichever
As much as I complain I love it! I get the wire and components from "Flywheel Supply." They have a very broad selection of wire and fittings. Different sizes and colors. Very quick shipping too! 👍 @flywheelsupply
@@lifeafterourloss Thank you very much, I'll investigate that.
I can imagine those original Cat mechanics trying to build the first D4 and all the "nice" and "complimentary" things they must have said about the guy the designed those assemblies!
I was just thinking, "I would solder that end..." and you did it! My psychic powers are amazing.
In WW2 Cat made a radial diesel tank motor. I remember reading where a long-time engineer looking it up & finding the specs on it. That would be very interesting!
I was not aware of a caterpillar Tank Engine. That would be very interesting to see. 👍
The Cleaner cutting himself and you getting the first aid kit had me laughing. I hope The Cleaner is ok!
It was very minor. I don't even think he felt it until he saw the blood. 😊
I'm late to this channel, I'm an Australian farmer with 3 daughters, I had to go back to understand the channel name. I'm absolutely heart broken. You sir are an incredible man, this channel deserves more subscribers. Not only do I love working on my equipment with my kids, showing them how it works, but like you work with dad, couldn't be more blessed.
Much appreciate the kind words. Hug those girls of yours and enjoy every moment with them. The youtube channel has been a blessing for Dad and I. We feel like we are doing something good for my son Henry. I am very glad you are here with us. God bless you and your family. 😊
On my Dad's D4 7U the brake pedal for the parking brake broke in half. He kept it for the memory of a bad day.
🤣, I think we have a similar "bad day" collection on the windowsill of our shop.
Blood sweat tears tooth & nail, You guys are getting there! I have that Danny Kaye inchworm song stuck in my head right now.🐛😁...✌👍
I had to look up that song and now it's stuck in my head, 🤣.
Can't get over how amazing it looks, especially having seen it when you first got it.
I go back and look at that occasionally.
Keep up the good work, so we can see it run soon!!!
Good job on the gas cap Cleaner, good as new! You guys put so many pieces on this time.
These memories are going to last forever
I hope so. Glad to share them with everyone. 👍
I gettin excited to see this baby run!
We are so very close! The first week of October is going to be a very good week!
Careful with pot metal these things can break without any forewarning. Your lucky yours was not a crusty piece or being open to elements for decades. I can say so much the Joseph tractors have the same kind/analog sediment bowl on for the pony engines. But they are 90% of the time missing or replaced with the soviet KP-I2 valve. The Brass screen for the main fuel tank looks all original. Early Belarus tractors and usually every soviet crawler came with the same setup a screen, locking ring and a dipstick. And rarely only the screen is there the rest is gone. Dipstick is very easy to lose. Take it out forget about it and it's soon stamped into dirt or missing entirely. Sharing a personal experience. 😂Do love the progress on the D4
Your comment gave me a good laugh this morning. It reminded me of a fuel cap that ended up missing. That might be a good one for Dad to tell on camera. Come to think of it we've had several occasions where that happened. Fuel caps, eye levels, tools and a horror story about a grease gun. 😖
@@lifeafterourloss Glad I could make your day happier 😄
I really like how you two work together.
Thanks! We worked together for about 30 years in the Excavating business. I spent about 8 years between working in Antarctica and heavy equipment sales / rentals. Now we're back to working together.
You guys are doing a awesome job! I’m rebuilding a old John Deere 950 tractor, parts are near impossible to find for it here in Canada so just ordered a bunch of parts from Alabama to rebuild my engine
Thank you! Glad you are here with us. I have found ebay very useful for some of the hard to find parts. Occasionally we get lucky there. Best of luck on your JD 950. Great tractor! 👍
I remember one of the manufacturers sent a machine designer out to help us install a new machine. He said it really helps them make a better machine. They did most of there research at the factory but field work was the real world.
Very true! A team of the greatest minds around a boardroom table can miss the biggest of engineering mistakes. A mechanic with a small tool box in the middle of nowhere will find it immediately. To be fair it is nowhere as complicated and frustrating as more modern vehicles. They did keep this design for decades. As usual there's a lot of tricks that we learn after the fact. I'm sure you gave some valuable input to the machine designers. Thanks again Tom and hope you're having a great weekend! We're starting to see a drop in temps here. 👍
Yes sir, temps dropping here a bit too
You are getting so close to noise and smoke, I can hardly wait!!!!!
The first week of October should be exciting.
sweet can't wait to hear it outdoors
Nice work, Lefty is looking better every day.
We are definitely getting to the exciting part! 😊
Hi My Dear Friend Very Very Great Job ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for your kindness! 😊
Nice touch with spark plug wire for a kill wire. Now I gotta do that.
I lucked out by putting my wire on towards the last. I can see myself moving it a few times too!
🤣, sometimes it's the smallest things that are the biggest headache!
My D8 fuel line was replaced at some time in its life time and the copper they used to replace it rotted just as steel, I'm replace the whole fuel line with stainless, I gotten new steel Ferrell ends but I can't find the nutts , I will then use silver solder to put the steel Ferrell ends to the stainless
That's interesting. I wonder what was so corrosive? I think a lot of times people overlook the possibility of electrolysis. We got a quote for the fuel line from the tank to the lift pump and it was over $400.....😖
@@lifeafterourloss possiblity or a very cheap grade of copper , I can't believe that is costing you 400 dollars, two 10 foot pieces of 1/2 .062 wall stainless only cost me a 100 dollars
@andrewklahold2880 After the $400 quote we decided to try and fix the original copper line. Dad has soldered any areas that looked compromised. He also did a solder wash on the fitting into the lift pump. I think using Silver solder was a great idea. It might be something we should do. 👍
Great video guys. You’re a doing a terrific job of showing the meticulously steps you’re taking in putting this Cat back together. Really looking forward to seeing it run!
Great update... looking really good.
Thank you! It's going to get exciting very soon.
Donkey engines are engines used for pulling purposes. Like an engine driven cable sled. Pony motors are starting motors.
We have always called them Pony Motors. In the comments several people called them donkey start. I always assumed it was a regional dialect difference. Your explanation makes perfect sense. 👍
that’s a nice looking D4
Thanks, much appreciated! We can't wait to hear it pull.
Good stuff.
Just remember the right way the wrong way and the Caterpillar way, that's all you need to know.
I suppose caterpillar would say it's the only way.
You pronounced lever correctly 🇬🇧
😂, I suppose so.
This is starting to get real exciting and the parts for the pony motor are just so neat, the little fuel tank and the sediment bowl I love it!
Hey Aaron I was just wondering where you sourced your railroad style bib overalls I would really like to try and find a pair 😀🇨🇦
Thanks Keith. I get most all of my bib overalls from a company called "Roundhouse." It is a 100 year+ old US Company. I found that they fit much better than all other brands. They also last longer. Unfortunately they were out of my size in denim so that's why I ended up with the Hickory stripe bib overalls. I've had them before but I noticed hickory stripe bibs do tear a little easier than the regular denim or duck canvas. I've had some black canvas ones backordered for over 6 months now. Hopefully they make it here for the winter and the greasy part of the next big project! 👍
@@lifeafterourloss Thanks man 😀🇨🇦
Where did you get the Mag shutoff wire? That looks very original.
I get a lot of those components from a place called "Flywheel Supply." After I thought about it it probably would have been a good idea to just make the spark plug wires out of it. They have a lot of assorted colors and widths. Very quick to ship too. 👍 @flywheelsupply
One more comment for the channel...
Always appreciated!
I saw that Squatch253 added a vent to the top of the water gasket in the pony motor. I believe it goes just ahead of the pony oil fill in general. Any thoughts on adding this it let's air out of the high point.
It could be a good idea. I know the late 7Js and early 5Ts onward all have the vent. So this was obviously something that caterpillar engineers determined to be necessary. I figured if the pony motor survived this long without one it will be fine. My other consideration was that as long as the system is clean it shouldn't be a problem. I will be adding a water pump lube and anti-rust to prevent corrosion in the water system. If it flows freely I would think the water pump would be adequate enough to push out any air. Definitely food for thought! 🤔 Great comment!
