My papa was a haaf netter on the Solway.A lost skill nowadays the stories he told me were funny!Strong hard men,not easy.I've watched my gran gut many a salmon in the kitchen sink.Excellent video.
Such a shame to see these methods lost, though it is very necessary. The damage was done long before even these days though, it’s a shame the impact it must have had on communities
I mind when auld Woodman there painted his boat dark grey so he could go shrimp poatching in the dark to far inshore. He was giving it to a wee burd up near the Weyroc. Haha
Looks a lot like the river Severn , I worked with two guys who fished the Severn at Frampton. Both grew up adding to their families income by fishing and shooting on the river. Lathe nets, and elvers , and eels geese, and ducks. Sadly both have passed away and their knowledge and skills are gone with them. God bless, Geoff and Dasher.
The two worthies talking are, My Cousin Robert Aitchison(with the beard) from Annan, and his long time friend, George Chalmers from Back o' the Hill...Annan......A beautiful film about ordinary folk!!...J Mcm..
I am a salmon rod fisher on the nith i dont think you see many men do this now the runs of salmon are very poor the nith the salmon has nearly no hope to go to the sea and come back to many of the nets for one fish farms sea lice of the fish farms covering all the smolts comarts birds goose sanders its very sad ever year less salmon seatrout all the old fisher men tell tales of the past there one thing there be no more tales from the solway salmon soon .

That film fairly took me back to when, as a kid, I lived at Cummertrees and the Solway at Powfoot was my "Summer Playground"!

Are you from there too?
so much work for only a couple fish
Ĺ
Beautiful camerawork, decent commentary, awful music.
Rubbish handling of the fish .
First thing that I noticed!
