  • The Schnee Family Semblance of Glyphs is the most diverse semblance we have seen in the RWBY series, encompassing multiple abilities into one Semblance. So let's break down what each Glyph can do and how this semblance can be modified and changed through Dust Augmentation. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

    A couple corrections:
    1) Weiss has summoned her Arma Gigas without using Myrtenaster. It is notable she hasn t used other Glyphs without her weapon.
    2) Weiss used Time Dilation a second time while fighting the White Fang Lieutenant at the end of Volume 2
3)Weiss used her glyphs with Wind dust in her fight with Flynt and Earth dust against Cordovin's Mech
Thank you to everyone who posted corrections in the comments! I try my best to include everything but I do miss things here and there. It's because of all of you that I will continue to learn more so I can bring you even better RWBY content! So thank you for offering corrections in a respectful manor 😊

Wiess' semblance seems like symbology or alchemy rather than magic. I think the basis of her semblance is using aura to manipulate, alter, enhance , and/or rearrange physical properties on a molecular level. The glyphs act as tangible 'pathways' and 'circuts' that allow a fine and precise manipulation of aura. In Volume 1 Phyrra explains to Jaune that anything a huntsman imbues their aura with can be used as a weapon. I think the Schnee Semblance is a very advanced version of aura projection that allows the user to use the world around them as a weapon.

The Snchee's glyphs are my favorite type of Semblance. Aside from elegant designs and aesthetic, it also posses different form of functions. Defense, Summoning familiars, Plataforming, Iceskating and Synergy with Dust.
*5:39* - However, I wanna correct that Weiss actually used Time Dilation *TWICE* both back on Volume 1 and Volume 2, during the chapter "No Brakes", against her fight against the White Fang brute with the chainsaw.
Another thing to point out that about Weiss's Glyphs is that she only uses her two fingers from her free hand.
Last edit. I would like to add that Winter also have her own style of using Glyphs. Back on her first debut on Volume 3, Winter seemed to use a similar speed-propultion-move during her fight against Qrow. Although she seems to relly more on her Summonings than using different varieties and her dual-wielding fighting style.

She did use her fingers to focus glyphs against the first nevermore when she propelled ruby up the cliffside and also when she was captured by raven to summon ... as for her weapon I think it's a form of focusing her aura .... but not completely necessary .... just preferred as a focal point like a wand to witch amd or wizard

What if the Schnee liniage comes from one of the daughters of Salem and Ozma because they were shown possesing power. We don't see them getting killed. For me, in a narative, unless you see the body, or someone says they are dead I will assume at least one of them survived. And they probably had kids too so I think the Schnee bloodline might have a descendant from one of those children. BEcause the glyph semblance seems passed down from generation to generations, it's more of a magical summons and I think they tap into their aura for the summons but what they do after with them is more akin to magic and how it works. ANd I disagree about Weiss sumoning with only her weapon, it might help her focus and direct her Glyph but when she was imprisonned in the camp with Blake she had no weapons and she summoned her Knight... She made the Glyph appear.
But yeah... I suspect magic comes into play, the Schnee family does use magic but are limited through time time that passed and had other bloodlines mixed with them.
Another indication would be the hair, all of the Schnee descendant seem to possess white (or platinum) hair. That would be a really hard gene to keep and yet each generation seems to be born with it. I don't think it's coincidence.

    • @SheenaMalfoy
      @SheenaMalfoy 4 года назад +1

I think the children weren't shown dead because that would force the show to have a higher maturity rating. Instead, it was only implied to keep it within reason.

I think we’ve already seen Jaune boosting Weiss’ aura and it’s impact on her summoning. This was in volume 5 after Cinder critically wounded her. After she had already been healed by Jaune boosting her aura, she produced a glyph in her palm and told him to “keep it up”. Shortly after that, Weiss summoned a Queen Lancer powerful enough to impale Hazel, who was outside the building, and yank him back into the building - a distance I’m guessing was at least 50 yards, but probably more. Not only that, but it was particularly durable, as it lasted longer than I’ve seen most summons last, even while sustaining damage. I’m guessing the reason why this Queen Lancer summon was particularly nasty was because it had been supercharged with Jaune’s aura.

Completely agree. I think the weapon is just for fusing dust to her glyphs to make it different eg. Ice, Fire, Electricity (time dilation rip) etc.
I think the basics she can do without the weapon such as push/pull and summon (not really basic).
Back in the character short, Weiss couldn't do anything to get out of her situation without her weapon, just pushing and pulling couldn't stop her from being pinned. She needed her summon (hasn't unlocked it yet) or other glyphs. If she could use other glyphs, that would have helped but she didn't (from no weapon to fuse the glyph with.)

Elise it might actually be a little bit more than that. Think about it in terms of Harry Potter, where their wands are a focal point for their magical powers. This could be the case for Weiss where, in high stress situations such as combat, it helps her focus her semblance to make the glyphs appear easier. That being said, unlike Harry Potter, Weiss doesn’t need Myrtenastsr in order to summon her glyphs, as she’s done so multiple times when not in nearly as stressful situations.

However, interesting thing there is that before that fight, she gave her dust cartridges to Blake to go fight Roman, meaning that for this fight she was seemingly dustless. I remember in the SMITE x RWBY skin showcase of the Weiss skin they mention that while working with Rooster Teeth they were very particular about getting the glyphs accurate. When it comes to the summons, what they can summon isn't just a tough fight they had, but rather an unforgettable experience that impacted who they are, which they draw from to make their summons.

The way I understood how so much came to the glyphs semblance is that as the generations go by, the semblance sort of pulls pieces from the other parent’s semblance and adds it to the glyphs (starts with just the white and glyphs, then maybe dust imbument, then the teleportation, etc.)

And also considering this, IF somehow Weiss gets the Winter Maiden Powers, she'd be unstoppable, literally untouchable even. Plus at some point the Relic of Creation, in her possession, could be used to give infinite amount of aura to someone.🤯🤯🤯😲

Someone already clarified the Glyph without Myrtanaster.
Mind you this has only been via the summoning Glyph and no other and even was a point of contention for Weiss in the fight with Flynt where she was helpless without her rapier and sacrificed herself. She did indeed also do it twice with the boarbatusk as well. Once at the party and during the reunion.
Time dilation meanwhile has been stated as the process of speeding up action. And it has been used twice. Weiss used it on herself on the train against Banesaw.
Winter has also summoned a pack of Beowolves and a Centinel.
Now I've seen the theory that the size of the summon can be made larger than they originally are based on the Alpha that Winter used being far larger than one we have ever seen but I think it's just she killed a much bigger one.
What I find interesting is how physically exhausting glyphs and summoning seem to be yet they tend to maintain a fair bit of aura. It seems to take more of a physical toll than an aura drain. But the defensive aura they have does not reflect the capacity. Meaning the aura used by the semblance itself is surprisingly low instead of meaning a massive aura capacity. Because they seem suffer breaks no different from anyone else. I'd argue Ruby has a stronger defensive aura than Weiss.
The source is obviously up for debate and could be magic related and I'd like it to be. But either way it is the most powerful and versatile semblance in the series by far.

So essentially, Weiss is a glass canon.
I've thought about this a bit lately, but I've wondered how semblances and auras work.
I've noted that certain people's auras seem stronger than others, like Blake and Watts, who've been shown to be physically a bit weaker than the rest of their counterparts. [I think.]
Out of team RWBY, Blake's has probably been the one we've seen flicker the most, despite being able to take a few hits. Watts' gets hit maybe once or twice and his was just shattered like a dropped mirror. As opposed to maybe someone like Yang, or Ruby, who we know to be probably the most physically strong in their team. Ruby, carrying a six-foot scythe All The Time, and Yang... Well. Being Yang.
Then there's Weiss, who seems to do well against grimm, but has had a hard time up until now against human opponents. I'd say she's the baby of the team, weaker even Blake in strength. But her Mental strength has to be doing numbers on everyone else's, even Blake's.
Not to mention, Semblances do form from someone's personality, right?
So this has made me wonder recently. Does how long someone can last in a fight depend on their strengths? Mental, and/or physical, as well as their personality? Is Weiss Able to do so much Because she's gone through so much, constantly evolving into better versions of herself through the series, while being able to take on other things, like her father, Whitley, her mother even at some point, training, the company? I'd say that'd qualify her as some sense of a multitasker. Maybe that's why she has no real issue handling everything she does at once. It also makes me wonder what her breaking point is. What her limit might be. If she's using a gravity glyph for lifting something heavy, does she struggle in lifting it if that thing is *too* heavy?
I'm rambling here, but this has made me think a lot and I've finally been able to form my thoughts properly! Thanks to your video.

Weiss Used Time Dilation multiple times, including in the White trailer, during the train fight and against Flynt Coal. It seems to Speed up Her local time, making her move faster, but it Also results in Her Slowing down VERY much once the effect wears off and she "syncs" back to local time. You see this in her fight on the Train where she moves lightning fast while hitting the White Fang dude with the chainsaw, but then all of a sudden she slows down and is moving in slow motion. Slow enough for him to be able to grab her face. I think that's the downside of using that technique, it speeds her up for a while, but then it slows her down to re-sync with the surrounding time reference which leaves her Vulnerable for a period of time.

Fire Dust might be a strength enhancement, for no other reason than Fire/Strength is a connection we've seen already in Yang.
Wind Dust might be flight, but floating other items seems more likely. Basically, temporary telekinesis.
Does Water Dust exist? If it does, it makes you either intangible or invisible.
Maybe to summon the Levianthan or the Whale, the family may be able to combine their glyphs together.

I believe summoning comes from when a schnee wins a very memorable fight against a grimm. If you look at Weiss, her main summons are the arma gigus, a boarbatusk and a lancer. The fights that match this are the white trailer's fight, professor Port's class in volume one and the lancer fight in volume 5. In all three she showed defiance against her name and learned to distance herself from said name after the fight. The boarbatusk fight is a bit hard to realise but it is there. The fight taught her that her team is her family and that she can rely on them unlike her main family.

I want to add a few things about Weiss' semblance:
-She also seems to be able to summon a miniature version of the giant nevermore in V9 E8 Dark (but not completely bc she got attacked by some worms)
    - Just like other semblances (like when emerald made an illusion of Salem that everyone could see), her aura gets tired when she uses it a lot, that's probably why she is weaker in resistance. In that same giant nevermore battle, after making a lot of glyphs for ruby to go on she almost goes to the ground unconscious..

Though Weiss did have myrtenaster in her hand in volume 1 against the never more we saw her mostly using her free hand when setting up the glyphs to help Ruby up the cliff as opposed to pointing Myrtenaster at the cliff side to help her with that. She did also accidentally summon the boarbatusk accidentally without her myrtenaster. To be clear as she was running up the cliff not the launching.

    I always figured:
-No Dust = Basic Glyph, simply a solid platform
    -Hard Light = Summoning Glyphs
-Gravity = Black Glyphs, can hold something in place or launch it forward
-Wind = Speed Glyphs, can speed up the user
-Lightning = Time Dilation Glyphs, allows the user to precieve time in slow motion, while still being able to move normally
-Ice & Fire = Ice & Fire Glyphs, obviously
Another theory I had was that all Glyphs are Summoning Glyphs, just being able to summon different things depending on how they were used. For instance, Weiss could summon ice in the shape of a fist (V3C1) or in the shape of her Knight's sword (V2C12), she could summon a gravitational pull (Or, I guess, anti-gravitational push?) with Gravity Dust, etc. Time Dilation doesn't really fit into that, though.

I think the 'time dilation works like Finalfantasy spell Haste or other similar spells from other franchises but it has a weakness (whether due to her inexperience or equivalent exchange is unknown) she speeds up the target but then when it wears off they are slowed or outright stopped in place (see Blake remaining in pose after Ruby calls ladybug until she has already made a full pass on the mech, and Weis freezing mid air during her fight with the WF chainsaw user 'INCLUDING HER HAIR' long enough for him to grab her)

Maybe one of Weiss' ancestors was the Winter Maiden - maybe her great grandmother when Nicholas Schnee was her age. And in her desire to protect her son when the Great War was going on during his youth, she passed on a fragment of her powers into him like Ozpin did when he created the Maidens. Which resulted in him and his descendants developing Glyphs.

Hmm... I'm actually more curious now who else could combine their semblences into something useful. So far we've seen Weiss/Ruby (Weiss' glyph turning red absorbing a bit of Ruby's "speed"-semblence (though IMO that could have also been Weiss using fire-dust, making the glyph explosive, increasing Ruby's acceleration as she fired Crescent Rose to propel herself forward)), Ruby/Nora and Ruby/Weiss, dragging the other along in her Rose Petal Burst (which in Nora's case seemed to have increased the impact the combined form had when attacking the Geist-Golem, adding the kinetic energy of the acceleration to Nora's charged-up hammer strike) and a lot of Jeane boosting peoples' auras, magnifying the reach/power of the others' semblences (Like Ren being able to hide an entire train).
So what other combination of semblences might be possible?

She used her normal glyphs without Myrtenaster during the fight with the barbatusk after it disarmed her in Port's class in V1.
I also don't think she teleports dust to her glyphs. Instead I think she just draws dust energy into her and infuses the glyphs with it as they're being made, since aura is what allows one to use dust and her glyphs are part of her aura.

I always thought that her glyph turning red in Players and Pieces was the addition of red dust, because It seemed early in the white trailer that red dust had repelling capabilities, as we saw weiss blocking the arma gigas' sword when her myrtenaster turned red. And then in volume 1 we saw Weiss roll her revolving chamber before launching Ruby, I thought that meant she was switching to red dust

Weiss also used time dilation when she was fighting the chainsaw wielding member to let her try and take him down with a quick flurry of blows. The use of ice seems to be a standard attribute when the glyphs aren't being augmented, it's not feasible that Myrtenaster's cylinders have the amount of ice dust for all of the things she conjures, Winter when showing Weiss summons for the first time did not show the use of any ice dust when conjuring.

Time is a relative concept, so time dilation probably does exactly what it says to an extent. It dilates a targets sense of time. Since if you accelerate someone's sense of of time, it would seem to them like the rest of the world had started to slow down. Harriot and Ruby both seem to experience a sort of time dilation when they use their semblances, as show with the giant mech and geist fights. Plus I would assume that any sufficiently powerful huntsmen would experience a sense of time dilation, since both Qrow and Tyrion where show to be to fast for Ruby to follow in their first fight. And yet they where able to maintain a steady level of control over their movements.

  • @leyrua
    @leyrua Год назад +1

I doubt the writers put this much thought into it, but I think it would be fascinating if, rather than teleportation, the fundamental concept behind the glyphs was one of "structure".
She's not teleporting dust through the glyphs: the use of dust is giving her semblance the blueprints to restructure itself and copy the energy pattern created by the dust.
Creating her summons takes time because she has to _fully_ visualize every detail of the creature before her glyph can recreate its physical form.
She wasn't teleporting her summon through the glyphs: she had already fully visualized its "structure" in her mind, and was holding onto that image, so momentarily dropping its physical manifestation to remanifest it somewhere else was no problem. But this is an advanced technique because if her concentration waivers even slightly in that moment of transition, she has to resummon it from scratch.
It would also provide a neat explanation as to why they can only summon things that have challenged them: those kinds of fights leave a lasting impression, and the adrenaline burns the image of that enemy into their mind. They wouldn't be able to cheat this by handicapping themselves, because they have to genuinely fear for their life.

    • @leyrua
      @leyrua Год назад +1

This would definitely fit well with her background, because a semblance as complex as hers wouldn't be able to be used effectively unless the person was fairly intelligent and educated enough to clearly visualize structures and anatomy in their entirety.

I think it's likely Summoning is more of a psychic "with your mind" power since Weiss has had to stay perfectly still and concentrate vs the swift motions of easing a Dust imbued glyph. And the usage of Glyphs is more of skill, especially since nearly every glyph circle Weiss makes (Summons exempt) needs Dust to work. (Without her Dust loaded weapon wand, she has to default on the summoning)
With Glyph the Semblance making it easier for a Schnee to use the Glyph Dust skill in ways other people likely can't.
It's possible making floating glyph platforms uses no Dust and is more of a Schnee Glyph ability.

She can definitely use her semblance without Myrtenaster. In Vol. 5, she grew her Armor Gigas to get out of the cage the bandits had put her in, but Raven didn't tell Vernal to give Weiss her weapon back until after she was out of the cage. That said, I could easily see the sword helping her focus it in some way, or at the very least, being able to act as a conduit for it. It seems like there's a whole subset of semblances which are object-dependent (such as with Adam's Moon Slice or Flynt's Killer Quartet, though in Flynt's case he might be able to make an acapella quartet, who knows - but I feel like without his sword, Adam can't actually use his semblance), and then there are some where it seems like they can be directed through an object (Ren's Tranquility, as directed through Storm Flower in Vol. 8 when he, Jaune, and Yang were hanging from the side of a cliff, or in Vol. 6 when he sent it through a whole train, etc.) So I think that Weiss's semblance falls into that middle category, where she CAN use it with an object, but she doesn't HAVE to.
As for Ruby's, she also uses it on Nora in Vol. 4 to create a burst of pink, electrified petals, which is cool. Volume 8 didn't have that detail in the Atlesian Military Compound, but I suppose the number of people involved there had something to do with it. Though it would have been neat to see a bunch of tiny petal bursts in red for Ruby, white for Weiss, pink for Nora, black for Blake, green for Penny, and blue/purple (?) or maybe yellow for May. I'm gonna go ahead and theorize that since Ruby was pushing herself to accomplish this particular use of semblance, her aura color was dominant over all the others in that moment, and that's why we only saw red petals. Definitely wasn't to simplify the animation process or anything, nossiirrr.
At any rate, I'm really looking forward to finding out what's up with the Schnee family's semblance.

  • @lordvaust5830

I think the Schnee’s summons only take a specific amount of aura to summon and not any extra to maintain. They take a set amount of damage before disappearing, larger ones are stronger but they take longer to make, and Weiss never seems taxed after having the summon out for long periods of time. It certainly tired her out to use her glyphs over and over again though. Basically, glyphs are an aura ability; meaning using them costs aura to activate. So she activated her summon glyph, pours in the necessary amount of aura for the creature she’s calling, and it sticks around until it takes enough damage to wear down the aura that was spent to make it.
