This video had me accessing parts of my brain that I haven't used in 30+ years. I thought I'd forgotten all of the old dos commands used back then, but apparently they were just being stored in some subdirectory of my brain's C: drive. It's crazy how the mind can recall seemingly unimportant memories from so many years ago.
One of your best videos ever! Brought back so many memories. Three of my favorite games of all time: World of Warcraft, Duke Nukem 3d and of course Descent. I too had a joystick, by Microsoft. Pretty expensive, but worth every penny. Remember that bonus disc with all those custom maps of Descent made by fans of the game? So much fun. You are right, some of the best games were DOS games.
@@TechDweeb Yeah, just seeing you go through those commands brought back memories. I remember having a notebook that was kind of a cheat sheet for me for getting back to the game!
I’m so excited you used my questions!! This was great! I was a kid in single digits when I was playing my first ever DOS games. Some of note: Jill of the jungle, Hugo, Zak McKracken, Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventure. Most of these were shareware, but I didn’t know the difference when I was 7.
@@TechDweeb I added words to the theme music about my grandma’s insistence on having sugar-free cough drops and her main method of exercising called “lift the leg”. That was an all-time favorite of mine. Make sure you have the manual for all the codes to get to different sections of the game. (Unless there are hacked versions where you don’t need the codes now)
Descent blew me away when I first played it, especially when you're not sure if you're facing up, down, left or right at times. Epic video of retro nostalgia, Dweeb.
Just wanted to jump back in and say that when it comes to controls in Descent, I found that the ideal way to play the game was to map your controls so that you're using the numpad along with the keyboard rather than just the keyboard. It spreads your hands apart more comfortably and it gives your right hand a much more functional, versatile, and comfortable control set.
When my father bought our first computer I was 6 years old. I remember sitting together playing Descent, sharing the controls exactly like you described ! Thanks for the trip back down memory lane. Great guide, thanks for sharing !
Man I still remember a lot of the dos prompts for my favorite games, I’m excited for a lot of my favorite side scrollers. Duke one and two, commander keen, thexder 95, abuse, magic pockets, Halloween harry, lode runner the legend returns, and one my all time favorites, jetpak.
Haha same. My muscle memory kicked in and I just started jumping between directories, starting games, moving files, renaming folders, it was all 2nd nature to me even though I haven't touched dos in years!
Some laboratory departments within US Veterans Affairs facilities still use DOS; It's kind of surreal in 2023, but it's cool to know that it is still relevant in certain settings (not that dweebs aren't relevant).
Hah, me and my brother played Descent like you and your friend did, copilots. This is amazing. More and more I'm considering getting a rp3+. Thanks as always techdweeb!
Man, growing up on DOS games was such a fun experience. I too had a large collection of diskettes filled with Shareware games that I downloaded off of BBSes. Sometimes the BBSes would have the full version. I am guessing they had some kind of special deal going on with the developer.....

Good times you would learn some command line in DOS and feel like a hacker while playing games
your poor co-pilot pierre was simply replaced by a joystick 😞 im 41 years old and man - got little tears in my eyes by that amazing video!! still lovin the good old days!!
Awesome, I didn't know about magic dosbox. Your setup is cool. I think you could do this with an Android tablet and one of those third party steam deck docks. Then you could attach a wired keyboard and mouse and joystick and have the HDMI go out of the dock.
If you really want to go retro, it's all about Pentiums. If you don't believe me, ask Weird Al. The man knows! Maybe you'd also like to mention other runners, like ScummVM, or a dedicated Duke 3D runner, or maybe even my favorite OMW (might be a bit risky now, I think Bethesda under Microsoft is trying to hide it so people would buy their upcoming port). Oh, and those Abandonware games, I was shocked at some titles I found there. Simpson hit and run is on there! Plenty of Nfs titles too! So maybe they deserve another video. Many of them could run on Android through Exagear, but that's a completely different can of worms. I'd keep it simple and PC-centric honestly.
Please make a Dos Box tutorial video. Ive barely messed around with it but have MANY old games id love to play. Edit: i commented before i searched your videos because i enjoy demanding things before knowing if they exist. I regret nothing.
When I was a kid, I played Red Baron, Command & Conquer, and Ultima Underworld on my Dad's DOS PC. Seeing any of those titles running would be awesome, but I really want to know how to get them running with just the RP3+'s controls.
If you're using the RP3+'s controls you can either go with retroarch (easier to setup, but not as good at the emulation and you might have to tweak the controls), or with Magic Dosbox (you'll have to setup the controls yourself but you can set them up any way you like).
DOS Games on Android are easier to setup compared to finding Windows 98 PCs or laptops that can play most of the DOS games. Sometimes, we just don't want to keep opening the BIOS menu on the PC to adjust speed for older DOS games. Having Magic DOSBox makes it more convenient. Also a smartphone or device with mid-range chipset will still do a decent job in emulating DOS games.
The retroid pocket 3+ looks more genius everyday I think about it. Can probably function as a smart home remote control, security camera monitor, etc. Most things that an Android device can do
I love that little setup. One question, Would you recommend the RP3+ or is there another handheld you think would work better is this set up? My bream is to have a DOS base cyber deck.
I wasn't sure running Dos games on Android devices is possible until I watched your video. It's amazing that I can use any bluetooth peripherals for controlling all kind of genre games. 🙂 I will give a try for Magic DosBox Lite to play Settlers 2 Gold Edition, Worms, Duke Nukem 3D, King's Quest 4-5-6 and other great Dos games.
Yeah, I'm still watching the video over and over. I. yeah, I'd like to see a video on Magic Dosbox. Don't know that much about it. Heard about it before, but never really got into it. I guess just didn't know if I'd have the confidence or know anyone that could talk about it where I could understand. Thanks again.
Some of the DOS games have very nice Windows versions, and more are getting made as time goes on. Doom 1&2, Descent 1&2, Quake, Star Control 2 (the Windows version is called The Ur-Quan Masters), C&C, Red Alert, Warcraft II, even Dark Forces got a nice Windows port in the last couple of years. I've only been using DosBox for Raptor Call of the Shadows and Dune2 (well, and Warcraft 1) lately, and even Raptor had a Windows remake recently, but I don't like that it stretches the game to 16:9, and the DOS version allows you to have a soundfont, such as EmperorGrieferus's Roland SC-55, which works great with GZDoom/LZDoom, too. But, lately, I've been rediscovering a lot of DOS games that don't have a Windows port, and you can totally play them on a PC as well!
Oh for sure, it's like 10x better when these old games get updated native versions, or proper ports. Doom has been ported to every device known to man!
Ah... Hugo 2, Hugo 3... A Day In The Life Of, Offshore Fishing, Cross Country Canada... Commander Keen... I never liked the hardware until I built my own PC in 2015, outside of the Icon computers at school with those built-in trackballs.
Android I used a 4tb WD digtal gaming drive the device detects it in file manager but when I look for it I cant find the location or its not there so not sure if its a format issue or a problem with the emulator
Dude, for me my Doss game of choice was Jazz Jack Rabbit. Amazing game. I had spent. so many hours playing this as a kid. It got me through a lot of really hard times. There ever was, and I was helping sponsor and helping. do content when? the. team was trying to remake. a game for. King's quest 9. It was a big. undertaking and it never came forth. Later, Sierra brought us the king's quest. Now that everybody might know from the Xbox. the project was called silver. lining, but never came Out. The game was supposed to put a quote unquote silver lining on the end of the story, wrapping things up. There was a lot of development and people that supported this project and initially to make the game. I guess the funds weren't there or something. of that nature Glad to see this here. I came back and made King's quest for the Xbox to me. It just kind of wrapped things up. in my mind, or at least the scenarios I played through. I think Sir Graham is my favorite video game character. Spent so much time in my childhood playing the games and all on the sea. That's probably the series that my mom helped me play the most because I had some reading disabilities. We went through lots of Hint books. together. I would only get a hint if I needed it. Back then, I needed a lot of hints. LOL. I remember those games so well and the Times that I had spent with my mother playing those as a child. I go back and play from them time to time. It always Reminds me of how my mom was such a great mom and spent so much time with me as a kid playing these games that she honestly knew nothing about. But we work through the puzzles together. Looking at the adapter you use for the joystick at 22:57 makes me wonder if you can use a USB-C dongle with the RP3+ to charge and use controllers at the same time.
This is totally awesome!!! LOL... Yeah, I'm super jealous of the mouse/keyboard/RP3+ all right! So, real talk, is Reuben a real person and is that story true? I don't even know why I want to know... On topic though... I'd love to play Terminal Velocity on a handheld but, apart from old phones which I don't like to use for gaming (even though I brought a controller for exactly this reason), I don't use any handhelds with Android. I'll have to play around with Retroarch on those Linux handhelds and see if I can make that happen. Thanks for the refresher on DOS! I feel like I should do this just to get some practice in case there's some kind of apocalypse and the only computers available will have to use DOS. It's not a perfect plan but I just want to be able to play Descent while I"m dying from radiation poisoning. That is all.
Ruben is a real person, but that story isn't really true. I'm still buddies with him and never took a photo of my butt (however, that's totally the sort of prank I WOULD play). When I went to make this video I found my dos skills were pure muscle memory. "dir/w" and "cd duke3d" are just engrained in my soul!
@@TechDweeb I remember learning DOSf from the manual that came with the computer I bought at the time. It was an Acer 486 with a 25 mhz processor and 4 megs of RAM. I don't remember the size of the hard drive but I think it was something like 40 megabytes (?) A few months later (probably to be able to run Doom more smoothly), we bought an upgrade chip to make it a 50 mhz 486DX. All of this came from CompUSA on Rte 1 in New Brunswick, NJ. Man...I was in my early 20s at the time. I am so old... 😀
Man, idk about typing all those commands. Back in the day I’d always use a commander. My favorite one was m602. Probably because it was Czech. Like me 😄
I gotta know, how do you go about color coding everything so well? I want yellow stuff but don't know where to start 😅 I've happened upon red with my MGS V PS4 and Mario Odyssey Switch so far. Or black 😅
DOS was fun. Then early Windows was aspectacular progression. Good memories. I used to play Ascendancy (with its great 3D star map), Sid Meier's Colonization, the Railroad Tycoon series (but I think that only the first was DOS?), Chuck Yeager's Air Combat and many more for hours and hours! Is it possible to play early Windows games on Android? I play a couple on an old PC running Linux using Wine (both of which have improved vastly over the last few years), but a tablet would be physically much easier for me now. I know that it's possible to play some Flash games on Android - a few of them were good. I'm glad that I caught a bit of this live. Thanks. 👍
I want to run some experiments and see if we can run windows 3.1 or windows 95 on android devices (and therefore the RP3+). If I can figure that out I'll make a video on it!
Any chance you could try playing the PC version of Killing Time on Retroid Pocket 3 Plus? For those who have the original version on disc to see if that is compatible with the hardware. I think it was on Windows 3.1 and 95.
My friend I have one more question I want to play Cod mobile and pubg so what is the best option for playing Android games, Ayaneo Pocket Air or RP4 Pro?
Don't really have a favorite DOS game ... Early nineties i was all in on console gaming, Sega Genesis then N64. My first PC was Windows 98 in 1999, but I didn't really get into PC gaming until around 2004 when FFXI (the MMORPG) released.
please explain how i can get jazz jackrabbit on to my rp3+ .. that, doom 2 and heretic with zdoom mod (i need that crosshair). i will be a very happy 7 year old in a 30 year old body.. all that combined with joystick controls..

I just wanted to tell you you're like my favorite RUclipsr. Honestly, II like that you keep your content rather clean and you don't curse that much.
Like me 😄
Im Sorry but- your voice reminds me so much of Craig from South Park i think it's really cool
I don’t think I’ve used a DOS prompt for 20 years. But I still remember those commands…
100% it was muscle memory for me
This is awesome! I remember playing a rip off tetris clone called d-blocks and a platformer called Monuments of Mars. On my dad's tandy.
Yessssss
I saw a video were they loaded commador 64 games to a iphone i think
Neat!
I gotta know, how do you go about color coding everything so well? I want yellow stuff but don't know where to start 😅
I've happened upon red with my MGS V PS4 and Mario Odyssey Switch so far.
@@TechDweeb I am genuinely excited (the upside of being 5 years old inside). 😁
you seem very expert. I want to use the easy method. Is there a wat to use one of the joysticks to control the mouse?
yes
Magic DosBox advance tutorial +1 😊. Also...running windows 95 games coud be great idea for another tutorial 😉
Any chance you could try playing the PC version of Killing Time on Retroid Pocket 3 Plus? For those who have the original version on disc to see if that is compatible with the hardware. I think it was on Windows 3.1 and 95.
Magic dosbox can also play old windows games too
OH!? I'll look into that!
Can you play it also with wired keyboard and mouse?
Yup!
@@TechDweeb ty so much bro I am waiting for the RP4 Pro I can not wait for it!!😁
You are missing one nostalgia program. NC aka Norton Commander! :P
Sabes si también puedo conectar un teclado alambricamente con un adaptador otg?
My friend I have one more question I want to play Cod mobile and pubg so what is the best option for playing Android games, Ayaneo Pocket Air or RP4 Pro?
I just started using bluetooth mouse too, I'm trying to get used to the pen mouse style, fun stuff
tried everything but still can't make the retroarch/dosbox-pure to recognize analog sticks and move the mouse. rp3+
In the control options of the quick menu make sure "analog to digital type" is set to Left Analog (forced).
Where did you get the stand for the Retroid 3+?
Amazon amzn.to/3nnYb4G
@@TechDweeb Thanks TechDweeb!
I played Deacent more than Doom or Quake. Completely forgot it didn't uave mouse sipport though. I must have used a joystick 🤔.
Don't really have a favorite DOS game ... Early nineties i was all in on console gaming, Sega Genesis then N64. My first PC was Windows 98 in 1999, but I didn't really get into PC gaming until around 2004 when FFXI (the MMORPG) released.
Men… please, please play Death Rally Classic!!!
And also, teach us how to play it on RG35xx too!
Do you think Sacred 2 would work on the retroid pocket 4 plus
I might see if a 1tb hard drive is better
Does this mean DOSBox can do save states now, since it's in RetroArch?
Yes! The DosBox PURE core can.
@@TechDweeb Great, now I can finally win Destruction Derby 2 :D.
Actually can use Keyboard and Mouse on Dosbox Pure
could i play diablo or starcraft on this thing? online?
You can play Diablo, but not Starcraft. And not online. As far as I know.
Gonna have to dig through the whole closet to find my old Descent disks...
Hi,have a nice day..what ur favourite game on ps1..
Hmmm. I think I'll go with Syphon Filter.
Have you ever tried FUTURE COP: L.A.P.D.? I remember it being great on two player.
What happens when you try to park the heads?
Is it possible to play eye of the beholder trilogy with retroarch? I have rpp4
please explain how i can get jazz jackrabbit on to my rp3+ .. that, doom 2 and heretic with zdoom mod (i need that crosshair). i will be a very happy 7 year old in a 30 year old body.. all that combined with joystick controls..
What joystick model is that?
Is windows xp gaming possible on this? I'm dying to replay vampire the masquerade bloodlines again
Not as far as I know. Man Bloodlines would be a blast to play on this!\
@@TechDweeb thanks for the reply. Yeah that setup would be splendid for playing that game.
I know there's a windows XP emulator for Android, but God knows if you'd be able to launch a game with it.
@@TechDweeb I really need to sit down and set up my rp3+ I've had it since launch (matte black btw) but i literally put alien isolation, Kotor one and two on it then left it sitting 🤣🤣
I think you could go as high as windows ME . For xp games I'd try exagear
Hey Tech Dweeb. At this point. in. well at the point. where I first subscribe to your RUclips. to this point with all the videos I've watched and there. are a lot of videos. I've come to the conclusion that this DOS series is actually killing it, man. Love the content. Sorry if the message before was confusing I don't know how to quite word things. You're doing such a good job with the DOS content. You said your favorite system to emulate is GBA. I don't know, man. You know so much about DOS. was born in that. time in that time. and around. for all the DOS stuff. I learned everything I could about DOS. I studied DOS when I went to vocational school for it. Learned everything I thought I knew about DOS. Dossbox. stages you were. talking about looks pretty revolutionary for DOS fans. Thanks for all the information on telling where to get free DOS games. As I already knew this, but I'm sure someone will find that very useful. People are nostalgic for these games that we grew up with and sometimes played at school. Man. dweeb. I love watching your videos. I think the most on RUclips because you talk about the things I care about. Man, I would really. like to join your group. But the only problem I had was PayPal. I'm not using PayPal. but that's the only thing I would say. that is making me a little disappointed right now because I would love to be in the best tier you have. I'm just not willing to use the method of payment But I enjoy all your content and everything you put out. Man, keep up all the good work. I'm not looking for anything. I just wanted to tell you you're like my favorite RUclipsr. Honestly, II like that you keep your content rather clean and you don't curse that much. But you talk about all the interesting stuff I like again. Thank you.
I have the rg405m and cannot for the life of me get the controller to work...any tips to get it going???
so is my s22 ultra ''just'' as fast as the rp3+ ?
I still want a magic dos box video
C:\DOS
C:\DOS RUN
RUN DOS RUN
That's adorable 🥰
@@TechDweeb Sometimes, '90s/early '00s Simpsons references just rise unbidden in my brain. It's a sickness, really.
