Shrikes main role was suppression of the SAM sites which they arguably achieved historically. Whether the Shrike is accurately modeled or not, is kind of a moot point imo as DCS SAM operators have no self preservation and keep on radiating even if they see an inbound ARM. Hopefully SAM AI gets a better suppression mechanic.
Skynet IADS makes SEAD both funnier and more realistic in DCS, but with the Shrike it makes it more effective as well since the SAMs actually do get suppressed even by missiles that miss.
Different tones for different bands probably isn't for a specific purpose, it's probably because the audio tone is a product of the RF energy received, so different freq RF = different freq tone. The easiest/most simple ways to produce a tone that is 1:1 with the signal received would leave some component or derivative of the received frequency intact.
Thanks for the videos Casmo! Tell you guys what, if you listen to the 10 percent true podcast, there's this F-4G/F-15E WSO named Starbaby who gives a phenomenal presentation about being in the back of one of those babies.
I would highly recommend trying the A-4 mod, it's as high (or higher, honestly) quality as any paid module in the game. It's also easier to learn than the Phantom, if a bit less capable. My favorite thing is to load 9 rocket pods and crank down the firing interval to 0.3, for like 90 continuous seconds of rocket fire.
@@CasmoTV Just checked. When FD is on, ADI needle is guiding you to wpnt, as soon as shrike sees something FD jumps to source of radiation with both needles. Works on direct.
You are awesone Casmo! I was looking for a shrike video (I love SEAD or Iron Hand as they called it back in the old days), Big THUMBS UP for this video!!!!
Excellent video. The Shrike makes SEAD unpredictable and very fun, if you use the Viper and the HTS pod I'd go as far as to say it's quite easy and almost predictable.
Hey Casmo many thanks for this tutorial it's been a great help. The reference chart is very useful too, but what I found is that the MK-50 kit locks to SA-19 signatures. Thought I'd leave this here for anyone wondering if the Shrike can lock to those
The thing about the shrike is that they were very accurate for most radar systems. The issue with the "combat data" is that the sam sites shut down their radars which caused the missiles to miss. Another thing about the arm is that there was 2 different types of attack, loft where you dip check and send it out of the range of the sam or just jam it down their throat Also isn the nav ball supposed to have the ILS needles to line up to the target?
The tone from the AGM-45 in game is NOT realistic. You are listening to the seeker head frequency reception. The director bars in the ADI will show the approx. angle of reception to the seeker head. Hope Heatblur will fix that later.
Great video. I do have a question for you Casmo or anyone that wants to answer, what are you using to be able to track the distance to target? I saw you kept looking down at the HSI and ADI, but what are you reading that gives you the distance?
Casmo have you ever considered taking the harrier out for a spin? I feel like it could be an interesting choice for you with its role feeling somewhere between an Apache and a strike eagle. Plus, it has Sidearms for some incredible low level SEAD shenanigans
When you picked up tone on that first SA8 at about 9:45 I noticed there was some radar screen return (noise?) That was centered on the scope. Was that related to the radar you were tracking?
Casmo, I apologize if you mentioned it, but how did you know the first SAM site was “eight miles” away? I saw you look down…does it show on the ADI if your in a certain mode? Also, the other guy was talking about the radar “not turning”…how can he tell?
Is it possible or realistic to do an asymmetrical shrike seeker loadout like have 4 shrikes that can seek 4 different radars? Or is it have to be all the same for avionics reasons
Shrikes Were Really Trash Missiles . They Had Bot Enough Range , They Weren’t Fast Missiles and They Weren’t Accurate and If The Tracking Radar It Was Targeting Went Offline , Shrike Would Lose It Almost Immediately and Their Seekers Were Not Broad Band . Standard ARM Was Way Better Missile But It Was Heckin Expensive Compared to Shrike and It Required Some Major Modifications To The Aircraft ( in F-4 there would a Huge Dedicated Standard ARM Panel Added to WSO Center Console ) As Soon As HARMs Came To Be , Shrikes Were Used Less and Less ( Up To Desert Strom I Believe They Were Still Used In Very Limited Quantities Because They Were Significantly Cheaper Than HARM and Standard ARM ) Couple more things ( edited ) : The Launch Call Out for Shrike is NOT “Magnum” , It is “Shotgun” . And Launch Sequence of 4 Shrikes Onboard Is Not a Bug , it actually starts from Left Outboard Then Left Inboard and then it jumps to Right Inboard then right outboard.
@@CasmoTV Gotta Ask MDD For That 😅 Even AGM-65 On LAU-88 Is Like That It Will Use All Of Left Inboard Mounted Mavs Before Switching to Right Inboard Mounted Mavs ( and You Cannot Force it To Jump Between Left and Right with Missile Reject Button 😅 unless you deselect Left Station )

Hence the "Suppression" in SEAD. If it was "Destruction," the acronym would be "DEAD" 😅

I would add 1 very important thing. Turn your FD on. It will show direction and angle on ADI, to help judge if launching parameters are good.
I think the ADI only works with the pre planned system but I could be wrong.
