Another thing I have seen European relatives do (because their houses and storage space is smaller) is buy good quality stylish clothes that will last 2-5 years then replace them with trendier newer clothes. The less options you have the easier it is to get dressed well.
Great tips! I wasn't aware of the "rule" that brown shoes go with jeans better than black. Makes sense. Thank you for sharing your legendary insights with the rest of us!
Solid advice here, John! The only thing I would add is that, in my opinion, light denim can work with a jacket as well, as long as it has no tears or distressing. It's just a lighter, more hot weather-appropriate look. Light denim with a light colored linen jacket and loafers in the summer is a look I really like. And where you live, in California, you get a lot of chances to wear this I think.
When I worked at Nordstrom and sold suits I would attempt to convince my regular customers to go for style over fashion. Some people just want to look fashionable and would follow whatever was the latest. Not for everybody. A few things that would make them look good and might last were the best way to go. I appreciate your idea of mixing things to achieve a seasoned appearance. Dressing well is really not difficult if one starts slow and adds a bit at a time to not overwhelm your wallet.
Very well put together video. I agree fully when you say dark jeans are the best for smart casual dressing as well as office dressing. They have become my staple office wear as dark jeans can be paired with almost any coloured plain shirts, and a nice jacket. Thanks for pointing out the brown shoe bit. Didn't realize that till I saw this video.
Thank you for not making every video sponsored by "insert product here" When influencers make every video sponsored , they dilute the value of their opinion because it becomes obvious that the message isn't about your passion for improving the life of others, its only about the $$ you get paid for shilling these products. I would prefer knowing that the influencer actually uses the products the hock. When every video is sponsored, it becomes clear that they are shilling products they don't use themselves, diluting the weight of their opinion. Again , thank you for keeping it real
As a watch collector ... Yeah smart watches are too hipster and youngster. Like he said fine for working out (even collectors have smart watches or ProTreks or G-shocks) but for work and going out you need a GADA (go anywhere and do anything watch) a thinner dive watch would work (some look elegant from Rolex to Seiko and Orient Kamasu), a simple three hander would work, a GMT is great for travel.
I agree with your tips. Happy New Year! In my opinion dark wash jeans are for the winter months and when you want to dress up, and light wash jeans and distressed jeans are for the summer season. Chealsea boots and loafers are perfect with jeans to dress up.
Happy new year John. Hope to see some car and weekend trip videos this year!!! Thanks for all the good info my friend and prosperity to you and all of your followers in 2024.
Happy New Year John,🎉 Just noticed you have over 400k subscription 👌🏼💪🏼 well deserved and well done mate! Joined your channel when you had about 200k and going through un ugly divorce. I'm getting it through it slowly. Have a great year ahead, and all your subscribers!
Happy New Year and great video regarding jeans. I wear a lighter stonewash as a casual daily setup and I tend to save my darker jeans for more formal outings or a night out on the town. I also like using brown shoes to go with those darker jean colors.
I will never give up my jeans! I would like to add, you can easily rock black dress shoes with jeans, it just depends on what your top is, especially darker tops. Make it less formal with black loafers. Happy 2024!
Happy New Year John, I always struggle with the casual/dress style shoe and jeans, just not confident in it I guess. Now brown casual boots do it for me but in Miami boots seems out of place.
Happy new year John, I've found at 55 that I go for solid colour jeans, grey or black. Find that when I wear a faded pair of jeans, I just feel uncomfortable now.
Give a chance to solid dark wash jeans as a replacement for black jeans. I think you’ll enjoy the new versatility, especially when it comes to footwear.
I dress up my jeans with leather sole, caiman skin cowboy boots. Would also do a chelsea boot or lace up casual/dress boot like what Beckett Simonon sells.
All the best for 2024! What about dark grey/ black denim and a turtleneck? With a corduroy sportsjacket it’s my „ elevated casual“ everyday style during the winter season; if it’s really cold a coat on top…
He specified black dress shoes. There's nothing wrong with black casual shoes worn with dark blue or black denim. If you wear a black sweater with dark blue jeans, brown shoes don't go very well. Black leather/suede casual boots or loafers look great with denim.
@@edennis8578 What is a black casual shoe? Is not a trainer, loafer, deck shoe etc. To me a black shoe is a leather shoe you would wear to a formal event or work. I suppose a shoe is generic really covers anything you were on your feet, unless you use a specific term.
Thanks for your videos, I allways love following. I mostly wear jackets to my Denims, so I do not need to darry around a handbag ;-) Allow me one comment re the watch. A good solution might be a Scanwatch from Withings: Hybrid of traditional watch and Smartwatch with medical functions....
Happy New Year! Are there any jeans that fit right that I don't also have to pull up constantly? I like the fit of 502 and i'm a bit over weight, so is it the size of the jeans or my weight?
As far as watches go, several years ago in an upscale hotel, a guest who was wearing a digital watch, this was way before smart watches were thought of, they guy broke out a pen to do some calculations on his watch. This was the ONLY time I've seen it done. Needless to say, watches are for telling time not figuring a percentage or figuring dollars into Euros, or vice versa. If it at all, spend to get a pair of dress jeans not the ones you wore when you changed the oil in your car.
I like how you approached this topic with kid gloves. Telling people how to dress is touchy territory, similar to telling them how to raise their children. But sometimes we need to hear the truth. Good job.
Happy to help! :/ Three years is 156 weeks and I make at least two videos per week. I’d say that’s a pretty good ratio. You’re free to think otherwise.
I couldn't agree more, but these tips are basic. If you are over 40 and you don't know these things, you are pretty much hopeless. As a 45 y.o. European i would add one more tip.Your jeans for occassions like these should be of a premium brand ( Armani,Dsq2,Diesel etc).Any unknown brand wouldn't do the trick
Seriously, there are less and less guys these days wearing analog watches. You can like them all you want but they’re becoming cuff links. Meaning that they’ll never go away entirely but hardly anyone will be wearing real watches in 10 years. But waste your money if you want.
Another thing I have seen European relatives do (because their houses and storage space is smaller) is buy good quality stylish clothes that will last 2-5 years then replace them with trendier newer clothes. The less options you have the easier it is to get dressed well.
Wear that sport coat! It's the key to dressing up anything .. and adding a bit of class. Happy to see stores stocking more of them now!
Thanks the the great advice! You make this way easier than I thought it would be. Love your videos!
Thank you!
Same here!! Just ❤ ur videos

My husband has a beautiful pair of Thursday boots he wears with his jeans and it always gives him a more elevated look.
Excellent video for entering into the New Year of 2024 as always much appreciated!
Happy new year!

They’re from Thursday Boots.
Great info - Happy New Year Sir!
Same to you! Thanks!
Happy New Year!!🎉🎉 John!! Hope your channel grows more and wish you the best. Love denims jeans with dark brown shoes love it.
Thank you very much!
Black boots also come in black matte, and nubuck. These would be a great casual look.
Light wash bluejeans, nice T-shirt, nice blue sneakers and a seersucker or poplin blazer. I think that lightwash can be a great smart casual look
It is, but would be tough to pull off in winter.
Happy new year John, I've found at 55 that I go for solid colour jeans, grey or black. Find that when I wear a faded pair of jeans, I just feel uncomfortable now.

Perfekt thanks from denmark..

Great vid.
Thank you!
Happy New Year, John 🎉got to many jeans 👖 your right w/ those choices! Need some sweat pants 😳😬🎆
Hi . Do you mind sharing where can I find the light blue sport coat from the cover photo?
Oh boy, it’s about 8 years old from Macys :)
Thank you for answering
Thanks for the tips. Is that shirt your wearing from Weston Boucher?
Yes it is!
Hi John, great video. Where can I get that light blue jacket at 0:15?
Sorry, not sure. That’s a B-roll clip of somebody else.
Have you tried the 365 pants from Huckberry?
Jeans and inexpensive khakis have frankly replaced my sweats - I feel sweats is a slippery slope to giving up on getting dressed.
No. Just no. Please don’t give up on the “Walmart suit” ie sweats and matching hoodie.
Sweats is to be used forcwhen you're gonna 'sweat', like gym.
All the best for 2024!
What about dark grey/ black denim and a turtleneck? With a corduroy sportsjacket it’s my „ elevated casual“ everyday style during the winter season; if it’s really cold a coat on top…
Yep! That works!
Ya I’m all about wearing my darker blue sweats pants with a ok quality blazer sport jacket. Try it first before you knock it
Happy New Year to you my friend. Totally agree on the black shoes with jeans thats a massive no go.
Happy New Year!
What?

Good 1 for 2024 🎉
Thank you!
What's your take on a slight fade/vintage wash in jeans over 40? Most brands seem to have that slightly faded area around the thigh/knee.
Good for casual use.
Happy New Year! Are there any jeans that fit right that I don't also have to pull up constantly? I like the fit of 502 and i'm a bit over weight, so is it the size of the jeans or my weight?
Might possibly be both. If a belt doesn’t help, consider how snug the waist is when buttoned.
What brand of jeans?
As far as watches go, several years ago in an upscale hotel, a guest who was wearing a digital watch, this was way before smart watches were thought of, they guy broke out a pen to do some calculations on his watch. One issue for me is the dark newer jeans can quickly wreck a white or pale shirt since the dyes are fresh. Any solutions?
Good point. Definitely bleach the white shirt, but yes, sometimes the dyes can be pretty harsh.
I like how you approached this topic with kid gloves. Telling people how to dress is touchy territory, similar to telling them how to raise their children. But sometimes we need to hear the truth. Good job.
Thx for the same video and tips for like the fifth time in 3 years.
Happy to help! :/
Three years is 156 weeks and I make at least two videos per week. I’d say that’s a pretty good ratio. You’re free to think otherwise.
Black shoes with jeans are ok!!! Even with jeans! Brown is ok … but never after 5pm where u must switch to black or blue!!!
When did brown shoes with black, gray, blue become a thing?
Happy New Year. Hope you can spread your wisdom and knowledge on the best way for single men to shave their back. Got no help. 🤣
Selvege or stretch denim ? That is the question . Any thoughts ? Happy 2024 John.✌
I love having stretch!
I have found myself going off jeans over the last few months. I find myself wearing Chinos and cords more and more. Am I getting old? lol
Haha!
I wear black leather work type shoes with my jeans. They don't look like dress shoes. So they don't look so awkward...
Can an over 40 wear those better quality joggers out and about , they look comfortable
Ur super good…
I am the proud owner of zero pairs of sweat pants. Let's put an end to the nonsense.
Absolutely!

No tears…no distressing…distressed…throw out
No man should wear Jeans after reaching 40😂😂😂
Dress shoes and a sport coat go a long way….
Dont wear jeans with a blazer looks like crap. where the whole suit!
Just stop trying to dress up the jeans. Better to just stop wearing them.
Jeans look like crap. (My opinion) I won't where them period.
Seriously, there are less and less guys these days wearing analog watches. You can like them all you want but they’re becoming cuff links. Meaning that they’ll never go away entirely but hardly anyone will be wearing real watches in 10 years. But waste your money if you want.
Disagree. The trend will be to disconnect. Less smartwatches…more going naked or with a traditional watch. Gen Z will drive this trend…
I think you have ok style. it looks basic, you look like every other dude. its boring style in my two cents.
What goes with an apple watch and a giant vape?
