I met Lou Gramm at the Beatles fest in Chicago in 2002, which was outside in front of 100,000 people. He headlined Friday night, and I had a meet and greet backstage pass. I'd brought my Lou Gramm solo album in hopes of an autograph, but security said photo op only. When it was my turn, Lou asked me what was in the bag I had. I told him no biggie, it was his solo album. He told everyone, "Wait!". He looked at the album, and then took the red sharpie I'd brought with me, and painstakingly wrote, "Stacy, all the best to you, Lou Gramm". This was not long after he had his aneurysm. I will never forget his kindness, and the lp, which is one of my prized possessions, is hanging on my living room wall. So glad to see he's doing well. Rock on, Lou!

Kelly does a good job, but it's not Foreigner without Lou. I've seen the Kelly-fronted version twice. Once was a the cover band version (Mick wasn't there...the longest-tenured performer that night joined the band in 2004). Lou is right that Kelly Hansen copies him. Listen to him with Hurricane to hear the difference.
Styx at least still has the essence of Styx, as they still have three classic-era members and as Tommy Shaw sang lead on a number of hits. Lawrence Gowan isn't trying to be Dennis DeYoung and does a fine job. It's not the original band, but we get what we get there, I guess. I've seen the Gowan version three times and they sound great. Dennis DeYoung sounds great solo too (though his backing band is no Styx, and those guys ARE trying to copy Styx), FWIW.
Journey never recovered from Steve Perry's departure.

What a kind human being! Thank you so much for your story! Lou is my favorite rock vocalist. I work as a translator of medical records to help Russian patients to be treated or examined abroad. Lou was my moral mentor and he amazed and inspired me to write my own poems at the age of 10. I write music articles for the Russian creative portal MuseCube from time to time. I'm the editor of the largest Rock Music Community in Russian social media with 18200 subscribers. I also learn to play my electric guitar and I'm blessed to have a treasured friend, who is Lou's younger brother from another mother. I never forget this real miracle in my life! Lou Gramm is a class act, his voice is admired by some of the biggest singers of classic rock. Paul Stanley has admitted he wished he could sing like Lou Gramm and that's a fact. Now in late 2023 Foreigner 2.0 have extended their alleged 'farewell tour' into 2024. It would be awesome to hear a new Foreigner (w/Lou Gramm) live album from the 80s. 'Say You Will' does it for me.

As a fan I have all the respect in the world for Lou G. But also as a fan, I saw Foreigner a year ago. I have to say when I went, I expected to hear what made their great music wildly popular.
While I “get” what Lou is saying, he’s always going to have a different perspective on the current band and their singer than the fans.
If I were Lou, I would take the current singer’s take on the songs as a sign of respect to him.
If I had gone and heard the songs done differently that how they payed on the radio, I would’ve been really mad.
I wish Lou the best. He obviously is bitter, and rightfully so, but the bar he set in the band is high. The current singer did him proud, whether he realizes it or not.

Yeah, but it just wasn't Lou's "perspective" about joining Kelly and band on stage and talking about how hyper Kelly was and dominated the banter with the audience amd wouldn't shut up. That was factual. Not perspective!!

I remember a few years after it came out I read a comment from Vivian Campbell saying that he disliked the album and thought the songs were second rate. It appeared he wanted to distance himself from the project. Personally I think his playing on that album is better than anything he achieved with Def Leppard.

I saw Foreigner with Lou once and a handful of times with Kelly. I love Lou's vocals and I also think Kelly does a great job of emulating Lou. I can see Lou's point but I think most people going to see Foreigner want the Foreigner sound and experience vs some reintepretations and Kelly gives them that. So I appreciate Mick for honoring that though I also wish he didn't lead to the circumstances that caused Lou to leave in the first place.

I have to admit this is the 1st time I have heard of Shadow King. It's a shame they only lasted one album and didn't get a tour.
I guess I can understand Lou's bitterness. But while I think it's flattering the "new guy" has been trained to sound like Lou (& the fact that it shows Mick Jones has a great ear), Lou Gramm is right. Keep with the spirit of the original and add a little of your own personality.
Finally, I think it's sad Mick Jones only comes out for one song. That shows he's in bad health. So pray for Mick Jones if you pray and be thankful Lou Gramm had a great recovery.

The Shadow King album really is killer and should’ve been HUGE!!! I always wondered if it came down to industry politics and now we know. It’s the only logical explanation for how such a great record came and went without a trace. I’m going to fire it up right now and raise a toast to Lou. Lou, if you happen to read this, I saw your first show after your return to Foreigner in ‘92 at Toad’s Place in New Haven, which was incredible! Kevin Jones allowed my brother and I into the dressing room post-show to say hello and you couldn’t have been more gracious and kind. I really made an effort not to be starstruck and fanboy out on you, but I did thank you for teaching me, along with Steve Walsh from Kansas, how to sing. You reacted very humbly and complimented Steve. I started singing in rock bands when I was sixteen in 1979 and I’m still at it today. You’ve played such a huge part in my musical life and inspiration. I just want to say thank you for being as incredible a human being as you are a singer and songwriter, which is saying an awful lot! Btw, Russia is an incredible song and one of your most soulful vocal performances. I do a solo acoustic version of it when I play out and I always get asked about it afterwards. People say, “It sounds like it could be a Foreigner song.” When I tell them it’s your band Shadow King, most are unaware. I’ve sent many a fan to Ebay to find that CD! It really is an undiscovered gem, sadly. It should’ve put Foreigner in your rear view mirror, IMO. ✌🏼

I admire Lou’s candor here immensely. The man has more integrity in his little finger than Mick Jones has in his whole family tree. He’s also one of the greatest rock singers of all time and any serious rock fan would not dispute that for a second.

Any true loyal fan of foreigner/lou could agree with a majority of the vote that I would not have any interest in the new foreigner line~up because it would be like seeing led Zeppelin without Robert plant and frankly I 💯 think that lou is what made foreigner so successful. Mick is riding the wave of knowing people will come see the new line~up knowing that alot of people are unaware and personally the kelly guy is in no way close to filling lou's shoes!!❤

Hey John. Love the channel. I’m a frequent watcher of your work. I thought of myself as a fairly big foreigner fan but I was surprised that I never heard of shadow King. I just listen to their album in its entirety and it is a fantastic full blown rock ‘n’ roll masterpiece that should have gotten so much more recognition and attention . Terrific interview with Lou. Thanks for all you do.

Shadow King suffered the same fate as a lot of good 80s-sounding music did in the early 90s. The Seattle sound became king (seemingly) overnight about the same time that 80s kids were getting married, having kids of their own, and focusing less on buying CDs and concert tickets.

Salty is a good word to describe his insecurity towards the now superior singer Kelly. When a singers instrument no longer performs with age youre done.

Tell Kelly to write some new songs with Mick Jones and if it matches anything Lou and Mick wrote then you can say that it’s not a cover band. God bless Lou you don’t owe those guys a thing but they everything to you.

Lou tells it like it is! Kelly is a great singer and put in the right place on his own with his own material he could have been great, but Lou is spot on with his assessment, some of the reunion videos I saw Kelly was “hogging” the microphone and singing over Lou. The fans want to hear Lou Gramm Foreigner and Kelly is as close as they can get, that’s why he mimic’s Lou’s style because that’s what the fans want to hear. Overall Kelly does a good job, but he is not Lou Gramm just like Arnel is not Steve Perry. Both Kelly and Arnel sing their butts off keeping the bands alive.

Absolutely right now let me rephrase that absolutely correct you have to know the ends and the outs of the music business learn how to read the contracts do not sign until you read it first or have someone tell you what it is because if you sign it that's when they screw you over if you don't know how to beat it.

    • @andrerone8208
      @andrerone8208 Год назад

@@starmc26 of course Mick Jones is a snake in the grass he took advantage of him from the beginning from songwriting credits possibly publishing and royalties not to mention probably a whole host of other things but he probably robbed him $1,000 if not Millions but what pisses me off the most is Mick Jones lives in a very nice house on an estate property while Lou lives in a small house in Rochester New York in a small house and when Lou said his because makes my house look like a shack that's what really made me mad so that tells me right there Mick had never cared about Lou from the beginning he's just a greedy Pig well now you know what he's probably in such bad Health right now it's called karma.

I loved how lou comment about current lead singer Kelly Hansen he's trying to sing like me he's mimicking me but don't hang your coat on my hook well said and spot on there's only one original singer of Foreigner and that is Lou Gramm.

      @pgnandt Год назад +1

The fact that Kelly is hanging his coat on Lou's hook means we still get to see (hear actually) Foreigner live. As an old musician I think Kelly sings Lou songs better than Lou.

    • @StreetTruckinTitan

Shadow King defined, for anyone who doesn’t know that small moment in Lou’s career.
This was the era where Sting’s Soul Cages had come out. And strange LA Musicians institute and Berklee powerhouses were in the guitar, songwriting, discipline music era.
And, in LA and other specific pockets, there were young male musicians who were not glam, but were exceptionally disciplined in health, practice and appearance.
Pretty dark brooding highly capable musicians who would be seen or defined later by Buckley or Cornell’s aesthetic
    Any who
One group of well groomed dark haired lads were very focused on prog but also pop, and they understood Lou, specifically the keyboardist and prominent writer of the Shadow King album.
    ruclips.net/video/azkiDAtEYFY/видео.html
And for Lou, this was a young army devoted behind him and aware he needed some time with a hitter type of focus after his first solo stuff that was still, too liked in Foreigner’s effect on his writing.
Therefore it would have been very dangerous for Atlantic to chose a side to promote or make money. MJ had always delivered up until 1990

I got and listened to the Shadow King album, which I knew nothing about previously, after watching this. I can, for a change, see the record companies point on this one. It's a solid, well done record, and it may grow on me, but grunge was emerging and where the buzz was as it time and the SK album wouldn't bring in any new people so I would promote it enough to make Lou Gramm fans aware of CV it but put most of my resources toward "hotter" bands at the time. Sorry for the run on sentence.

I would like to share something with you great comment regarding about Kelly needs to find his own voice I meant Steve Perry of Journey back in 1995 he was very nice to me when I met him and he says what do you do and I told him it says I sing and I sing a couple of his songs to him but I did it in my style of voice he says you have a beautiful voice with that being said you have to find your own niche and create your own and I agree with you 100% the best part about it was is when I was talking with him I told myself I was coming over to get something and then I'm going to go back to the family restaurant to get cooking on some things and it was my birthday and I'm going to go celebrate well he was kind enough to give me a CD call For the Love of strange medicine autographed this signature on it and let me tell you I still have that thing to this very day but yes he was very nice but not obnoxious like Kelly well said and spot on🤣👍💯
