    Totally agree, great message. Too many railfans don’t financially support these organisations/services, then get disappointed or even angry when they go under. So spreading the message of supporting these organisations is great!

      Too many railfans are a complete pain in the arse on trips, and ruin it for families and friends who want to be left in peace and quiet to enjoy the trips, without some of these clowns, (not all), up and down the train continually.. Sorry but it is true.

    There's still a chance we could get this line going again to Leongatha.
    Leongatha and the towns up to Cranbourne deserve to have a rail passenger service.
    The state govt should be securing the land all the way to Leongatha and the infrastructure and re-open the line.
    Walking trails are just bullshit.

    Great message. Spot on. Effectively it's "put your money where your mouth is". Especially relevant for those of us who are older and have disposable income.
    I used to catch the South Gippsland train to and from Melbourne every week - I loved it and appreciated it every journey. I was livid when the new government at the time closed it, especially as the new transport minister was the local member, Alan Brown, and his first decision was to close his own electorate's railway. I'm glad they alignment is being used as a rail trail rather than sitting useless, but I hope a railway can come back one day as the area inevitably grows in population.

    Awesome message .. My mother was station mistress of Alberton Railway Station for 19 years -- Right up the the closure of the passenger services in 1981.
    As a young boy I had the passenger and freight train running metres from my front door, I saw many special trains; Stock Trains, The Royal Melbourne Show train (attached to the morning and evening services). The house that my family lived in was nearly 100 years old at the time of the pass being cancelled. I miss those years greatly.
    Thank for rekindling some great old memories.

      I remember your mother. I used to work for the old VR in..well let's say a revenue role, (if you get my drift), and sometimes we would get sent out on the Yarram train way back in the day, not that often, but when something with a couple of passengers on a train was "sus" and occurring more than it should. I liked Alberton station and she always had it neat and tidy, and from what I knew, the locals loved her. Unfortunately we didn't get to know her, as the train just stopped for a short time and went on it's merry way. Remember when they actually put an air conditioned carriage on the Yarram train? Old BE red car repainted VR blue with air con. That was a novelty, but needed.

    Thanks for your message. Many people don't realise the costs associated with running a railway. Weed control, sleeper replacement, station maintenance, insurance and then you get into the really expensive stuff like carriage restoration and locomotive overhaul. It'd easy to understand why so many tourist railways fail. If you add the lack of volunteers and the ever present internal political issues it's a wonder they survive at all.

    I haven't trekked along that railway track. But I trekked along others in Gippsland. My father worked for the railways and I was exposed to trains and tracks from a very young age, often going with him on the job, which would illegal in this age but I had a great time back then and learned much just from watching the men at work and hearing them talking about what needed to be fixed, how etc. I learned all the various Train routes etc. By age 11, I knew enough to be able to jump on the train to Melbourne for a holiday I had no permission to be on ie I had run away, on my adventure trip to see the city. Very dangerous for a young child to be doing... But I had this romantic fascination with trains and railway lines. Still do... Just sitting back in a train seat music on, a beer or wine or cider glass in hand, watching the scenery fly by your window, wondering about what goes on there, what folks do etc. There is nothing like it....Only now you are not allowed to smoke or Dr NK alcohol on train journeys in Victoria, like we used to. The Old Gippsland diesal train that rattled all the ways to Melbourne from way out woop woop, in the remote East would stop at every one of the hundred or so tin pot country stations to Melbourne. It was quite an experience. The elaborate Victorian art work on the old red rattler trains, the leather seats, the people all dressed up to "go to town" etc. I really miss those old days from an era where there was a bit of class and style, even among Country people. Could ntry class and style. A certain way of behaving, dressing etc to travel. Manners etc. In other words, high standards of public behaviour. Travellin on the same line is now an absolute nightmare. Awful seats. Awful people everywhere on the train. Crowding. Nowhere to put your luggage. Crap service. And you can end up baking in searing summer sun for hours on the long journey, if you are assigned a window seat on the side the sun glares in through. Because there are no longer even any sun shading curtains you can block the sun out with. So you need to wear a hot large brimmed hat and sunnies or put up a parasol umbrella. To travel on a train, for God's sake! How insane is that! Also, all the Melbourne metro trains on short journeys are all air conditioned. But, on very long country V line journeys in rural heat or freezing cold, there is no air conditioning or if there is, it might as well not be there because it's suffocatingly hot in summer and you freeze in winter cold. But you cannot even open doors or windows for cooler air in summer heat. So, if travelling from remote Victoria to the city, you need to practically bring the kitchen sink to avoid freezing or dying of heat exhaustion, starving, dying of thirst etc. Pack blanket, personal battery powered fan, thermos flasks, food boxes etc. Because there is no longer even a snack bar or a place the train stops to get some food on this long tortuous journey, though it used to stop at Warragul where you could buy a hot pie to eat and the Gippsland train used to have two dining cars that even had proper silver dining service, white table cloths, beautiful polite city and country shifts of girls to serve you nice home style cooking as well as liquor. It was truly a great way to travel. Unlike now. And, even if you pack all your own basic journey needs, you are greatly restricted in the size and weight of your luggage and where you can Stowe it. (You'd think it was a plane trip!). Your luggage must be put up on the roof rack but many short women can't reach up there, let alone lift luggage to put up there. Standards are so bad now.

    Hi Will,
    In the 1960s the old Deisel powered Train departed Flinders Street Station at 6:13 pm.
    Route was through Dandenong, Cranbourne, Buffalo and on to Leongatha (Cafe Stop 15 minutes) the Korumburra, Koonwarra, Meniyan, Fish Creek, Foster..where I would get off at 10:00 pm.
    The line went on to Yarram.
    Sad that V Line shut it all down.

    I completely agree, I’ve become a member of Steamrail Victoria, have bought the puffing billy railway local pass many times in the past, and I’m working on becoming a volenteer for the Mornington tourist railway, and is allready a member. Us rail fans really need to show our support to the railways in a way that helps the railways themselves. Instead of just relying on them.

I think every enthusiast feels it when we hear the words 'rail trail'. Very well done....some of the pictures brought back very fond memories of my days as a young Trainee Engineman in the mid sixties. I worked on a number of occasions on the Korumburra and operated that very turn table you displayed on one of the photos. The hardest thing to do on the engine was trying to prepare a cup of tea for the Driver and myself....very rough lines. I remember a collision with a live stock sitting next to the the line, in the dark and deciding to cross just as we approached....very unpleasant outcome. Saddened to see the condition of the stations...it really brought a lump to my throat......Can anyone do something about that? I am sure the younger generation would be interested in touring the old line if there was something interesting to see.

    Everything you say is valid. From what I understand it was a lack of volunteers that killed the SGR. There are several clubs I volunteer for and each one has had a decline in the number of willing workers. Even if they have adequate money unless there is someone left to actually run things they cannot continue. PS you left out the Yarram to Woodside branch line from your description. Oh and even the narrow gauge Welshpool to Port Welshpool line. There was a reason for it being considered the GREAT Southern Rail Line.

      I did unfortunately, thank you for letting me know, I'll be honest as this was my first video of this type, i might have rushed it a little bit. Id love to know more about the narrow gauge line. Victoria certainly has had a very interesting history regarding narrow gauge railways!

    • @smitajky
      @smitajky 2 года назад

      @@WillJamesRailways The narrow gauge line was about 6 km long from Welshpool to the shorter port welshpool jetty. ( not the long curved one). It was hauled by horse. Which was part of the reason for the narrow gauge. It was a reasonable weight for the horse to pull. You can still trace the route via google Earth if you are careful.
      I think it closed in the mid 1940s as the worst of the WW2 problems receded

    I agree, I feel that local council & community didn't really get behind the great tourist attraction they had.
    I myself never got to ride the SGR which saddens me, as it was something I really wanted to do & never got the opportunity.
    I feel also an issue with getting people to the region is the roads, which are quite honestly terrible. They are like a goat track at times, and public transport. It's pretty much non-existent down that way which limits the accessibility.
    I've also seen the plans for Leongatha station and that theyve already removed the rails and smoothed the existing crossing, it's a real disgrace & going to be such a shame, I hope the SGR get some sort of kickback from local community & council to be able to freshen up their buildings with historical pieces and images, perhaps even turn the shed @ Korumburra into a museum building of sorts, run tours through etc.
    Anyways rant over

    • @WillJamesRailways

      A very justified rant, it's something that since making this video has really got me angry about what has happened. I don't think the greater community understand just how busy tourist railways could have been for Victoria. There are benefits for so many. i don't think people understood what trucks would do and cause to the road systems. The whole things a mess and my heart is full of anger that not one section of track is being preserved from Korrumburra station for future re-reinstatement as a Tourist Railway. A big killer was the lack of steam that could be used due to fire restrictions and concerns. Just sad now-adays when I view old classic footage. The problem was and always will be the Government. Lack of funds, misappropriated funds, local and Federal Government should be codwollaped

    • @WillJamesRailways
      @WillJamesRailways  3 года назад +1

      Yeah its a real loss to that side of Victoria, I mean it would have been advantageous to re instate the railway to help get traffic off the roads but no! Ah well ,maybe they'll bring it back in the future as they're not removing the alignment.

    • @AussieChic968
      @AussieChic968 3 года назад

      Yes, railways were so important to Victoria eg to carry huge volumes of freight, logs, animal stock etc. I recall how they used to load pigs etc from farms onto trains at a local remote railway station to take off to the slaughter houses... Trains could still play a valuable freighting and people transportation role and relieve congestion on roads, reduce road accidents, reduce pollution etc. I wonder how much more costly is it to run trains and keep tracks etc in good order, compared with the massive amount spent on maintaining and building roads, tunnels, overpasses, bridges, underpasses etc? Not to mention all the accidents compensation payments and we won't even start on all the massive pollution cars and trucks cause....It might prove more economical for the government to build more rail infrastructure etc than more roads that only cause more congestion, more hazards, more pollution, massive social type problems eg road rage, busy noisy roads near residential areas that drive residents insane with stress from no sleep. Until people can't handle any more of this and just go beserk eg throw rocks at cars etc. A well run good, reliable, safe, secure train system for people transport and freight trains could probably solve many problems and might be worth the investment. But only if it is run properly. The current V lousey me and Met services in Victoria simply do not make the grade. They need to be got rid of and replaced with a far better operation. I mean, how crazy is it that you are required to have a valid ticket to travel on the V line in regional Victoria but you simply cannot buy a ticket for the love of money because V line stations are often closed, there is no ticket vending machine and, if you are lucky enough to find a railway station that's open to try and buy a ticket, some rude little turf, probably from Melbourne who fancies "country life" will cut ly inform you that they won't accept cash... And you need a card to pay. What if you have none? And then you try to catch a bus and obviously, honest people want to pay the fare and you need a valid fare to ride. But they tell you you need to get a ticket from the station, typically miles away, that is probably not even open. Because the buses have not even an automatic card payments machine for fares. And, hey, yeah, we're in a Covid pandemic and we don't accept cash. But you still must have a valid ticket to travel, with hefty fines applicable of caught without one. No wonder so many hate public transport and buy more cars. But if the public transport industry got its act together, more people would use it.
