    "Set in the Viking age, a broken Celtic warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover."
    Can we take one look at this description, one look at the game, and all agree that, in addition to being thought-provoking and intriguing, it's also *metal as fuck*?

    As someone who has suffered with psychosis for the past 11 years i have to say they have done a great job, mine is nowhere near as crazy as the character's is (as in sheer number of voices she hears) but i can still relate to how it feels and that self doubt that shows itself in this game

    Having had some mental issues before (not voices, just the regular kind) this certainly reminds me of those periods. Not in terms of voices, but the notion of never being sure what to do, never being able to trust your 'inner voice'... very familiar. In fact, just watching it makes me feel weird. Very well done, incredibly impressive!

    • @jazy921
      @jazy921 7 лет назад +10

      In terms of voices though, the voices blend in to most of the background noise from all around you, like when you hear people talking around you it sounds like those people are talking about you(just like the voices in this video do). And when you hear sounds in the background like from a construction area nearby, for example, instead of "clang! clang!" or drilling sound effects, you hear people saying things to you during those moments when they're supposed to sound like the hammer/drill/etc.
      It certainly can be distracting and makes it difficult to function normally, having these voices overwhelm you most of the time.

    I appreciate that you're not trying to turn this into a joke, but rather keep your commentary in line with the tone of the game. Outright horror like Layers of Fear or even Observer can lend itself to that since after the jump scares you get the relief of remembering you're actually safe and can laugh about your reaction, but this feels heavier and I'm glad you can work within that tone.

    I knew a bit about runes already but not too much, and I was curious about how the game devs added them for meaning in the story, so I thought you might find this interesting, Odd. :)
    The "M" with the extra cross through it is called Mannuz (pronounced mawn-nawz), and is associated with augmentation and support. (Which sounds like one of the two gods you'll go up against first.) It seems to represent mankind as a whole as far as I can tell? Which makes sense, since you can hear in its name. But yeah, humans and the nature of humanity.
    Then after crossing the beam way high up we hear about Hela and her family, there's the rune that looks like a normal "M". This one is Ehwaz (pronounced ay-wawz), which means horse, and is most heavily associated with trust and companionship. It also has to do with balance and stability, with having the tools you need to move forward.
    Hopefully this can bring a little bit of insight and further thought while playing! I'm really interested in seeing how they use them and any secret/deeper meanings they might bring out.

    Being someone who suffers from depression, paranoia, and anxiety I immediately recognize the voices Senua hears as the numerous thoughts a person can have At the same time. The voices to me seem like they are her pessimism, anxiety, fear, self doubt, fight or flight, and paranoia.
    In the beginning while she paddled past the corpses on spikes the voices say, 'their looking at you', 'their watching you', 'they can see you' that's paranoia for sure; I know it all too well.
    Later after she gets off her boat and hops over a log into waist deep water the voices say, 'run!' 'You need to go faster' 'you need to move faster' that's fear and fight or flight.
    Right before Senua hops down into the cave the voices say, 'you don't know where you're going' that's pessimism, self doubt, and maybe anxiety. (Sorry if any of my quotes are miss-quotes, my internet sucks at the moment so it's difficult for me to go back and verify each one)
    Not sure what the right choice is in the game, but going off of my own experiences you don't want to give any of the voices any credence. They will always steer you wrong. Best thing you can do is maintain your rational mind the best you can, and dispell the voices (thoughts) with what is more logically the reality of the situation.

    • @munky342
      @munky342 7 лет назад +9

      Mr. Beefy
      I have suffered (and sometimes still do) from depression brought on from PTSD, and can very clearly remember the self doubt that spirals into depression (at least for me, it's obviously different for others).
      This game portrays that feeling very well. I've played it for around 3 hours and those whispers become very real for me.
      Perhaps I should play it without my headset, but I feel like I'd be missing out on the excellent sound design.

    been waiting for this game a long time. Also chris, just for this game, could you consider speaking in a softer voice? As you noticed the audio of this game is fantastic and i think that if you complemented it instead of covering it, it would make for a better experience. great job anyway, thanks for playing this.

      you misunderstand me. I don't wish for CHris to stop talking outright, just to speak a bit softer, to complement the game mood and feel. I like hearing odd talk, otherwise i wouldn't be here.

      Rotscrek Ahh. Thought you meant you just overall wanted to hear the voices. But I enjoy Chris as well. 10/10 I used headphones and it sounded great. Still a bit chilling because it feels like they're right in your ears.

      Usually Chris doesn't talk over in-game voices, but I don't know how to solve it in this game. The voices are talking basically non-stop.

  • @SmartK8
    @SmartK8 7 лет назад +7

    This is so great and mental at the same time (in a good way). It's for PC so I'll play it myself and will watch let's play later (to see how Chris handled it). The graphics is incredible! Especially the Druth facial animation (I'm still not convinced it's not a real life video of some actor blurred to look like it's rendered). The voices are so creepy with headphones. I'm glad it's about 10AM here.

    As a healthcare professional, this is super interesting. It brings in a lot of small details that aren't spoken of but follow mental illness (primarily schizophrenia). Tacticle, auditory, and visual hallucinations. Memory loss (forgetting the name of the bridge even though it was just spoken) is a common feature.

    This is amazing. I mean, really.
    I hope that games like this can give "healthy" people a visual and auditory idea of what mental illnesses feel like. I do not suffer from schizophrenia or psychoses but depression and only very few people have an idea what this all even is. I do not blame them, because people who never suffered mentally simply cannot know better.
    Can't wait to see more of this game and read what all people have to say about it. It's super interesting and I hope the developers and everyone else involved with this game get well rewarded for this project :>

    Schizophrenia is a hell of a condition; voices like this but sometimes in massive numbers all at once; usually negative, with one or two positive projections to keep you going sometimes. Hallucinations and delusions; feeling as if the people on your screens are looking and talking directly at or to you. I went through a few years of therapy and recovery after some traumatic events in my life, and while I can be grateful I pretty much made it through with very few residual effects, it's scary to think some people never do. Definitely watching this whole playthrough.
    I hate the asmr effects already though lol freaking scary-close to the real thing other than the voices aren't being created by my own subconscious (thank gawd).

    :::::PLEASE NOTE REGARDING HEADPHONES:::::
    This game uses bineural sound (sometimes called holophonic sound) for some effects like the whispering "mind voices".
    In order to experience this you MUST use headphones (or even better - earplugs, but headphones work fine). Speakers completely ruin the illusion (it has to do with where the speakers are physically located in relation to your eardrum).
    I highly highly recommend you don't watch this on speakers or you will lose out on an amazing audio experience.
    FINALLY a game uses bineural sound! I've been calling for this for ages! :D

    Like many other’s, never got to finish hellblade ( Life + Time & Super Clean ) upgraded from win 7 to Windows 10 Pro build 1903 & dicided not to keep documents : kinda Regret it because of all the games that we’re 85% Complete 🤨 at least most of them feel New again. Today i Revisited Hellblade & wanted to see if Chris played it 🎮 This is an incredible game & you’re perfect for this type of Genre. Thanx for Posting 🇵🇹

    Hello Mr. Odd, I know this is an old video, but I found your channel by searching for a playthrough of Hellblade. I currently played through the game myself and was looking for another perspective of it. Just wanted to say, that I really appreciate your play-style and am glad to have found your channel.

    Graphics and facial animations are really impressive. Very unique game overall. Will be interesting to see how it carries on, and what Odd'll do if he gets beaten to many times and has to start all over again. haha

    I honestly feel like this game is 2017's Shadow Of The Colossus. It's been a long time since I felt so fulfilled by just an opening of a game, so immersed in the world. It just feels like it managed to close the gap between story telling and the readers/spectators fantasy to a point where it's in absolute balance. You get totaly immersed in the atmosphere, while still asking yourself all those questions like how, what and why, to a point where I, so to speak of, can at the same time totally comprehend it while not understanding a single thing.
    I'm really enjoying it so far. Only negative thing I'd have to say is that your audio doesn't fit in with the game, since it's heavy audio reliant itself. Maybe you should just lower it and try to speak softer/gentler, it would propably really benefit immersion. Nevertheless, great let's play chris, keep it up and I'll totally follow this series.

    As someone with a Mental illness myself this is very cool and nice to see in a game. I hope they don't have the option to turn off the voices.. Its a part and plot of the game. I'm excited to see you play this Chris 😁

    I was having doubts about buying this game and thought: 'I will wait for a video from Mr. Odd to check out if this is worth a buy'. 5 minutes in and I truly think this is a masterpiece and bought it.

    10:05 yeah, that's the detail you get by scanning a real person (face, body) and animating all of them via motion capture (both body and face, both at the same time, with voice, all of it visualized in realtime in-engine so the actor can see it immediately, also explained in the dev diaries, very much recommended)
    btw I love how observant and appreciative you are, I have no idea why I didn't look right away if u have hellblade lp, instead of blindly looking for some people with facecams (btw this is the first game where facecam not only doesn't annoy me, but it even seems to be required, when you watch these LPs to see how people react)
