Brother, I first heard this version of, “How Great Thou Art”, several years after his passing, on radio, during an Elvis remembrance special. At that time, there weren’t any concert videos to look at, but when I listened to this performance, I cried. I felt he was vocally, and spiritually calling out to God. Never has any other singer moved me like him.

He was so sick at this concert. It was just 6 weeks before his death and he gave it his all. He did it for the love of his fans and for his art. All of us Elvis fans are grateful that God blessed us with such an amazing and beautiful soul. And I am grateful for you Ray, for something to look forward to everyday. Thank you so much. May God bless you and your family.

@@tonbruins7335 everyone is entitled to their own opinion. That is what makes this country a wonderful place to live. I respect your opinion. Of course he worked for the money, but I think his love for his fans helped him push himself so hard. I found out the other day from an Elvis researcher that Elvis didn't take any tax write offs for the houses, cars jewelry and anything else he gave away. He felt like it wouldn't come from the heart,it would be for the write off. And he also didn't cash any checks when he was in the army because he said he didn't need it.

    • @tonbruins7335
      @tonbruins7335 Год назад +2

@@candiehamilton9943 He pushed himself because, again, he needed the money. He had so many people around him on the payroll. And Elvis himself did spend too much money. When Elvis died he had to pay 6.000.000 dollar on taxes. There was only 2.000.000 dollar left when he died. His father, Vernon took care of the taxes and bussines according money that Elvis earned. That was bad news I can tell you. Vernon had no clue how to arrange things in a proper way money whise.

It had a lot to do with his weight.
Extra weight supports the lungs. It holds them "in place" and makes singing easier.
That`s actually why so many great opera singers are overweight.

      Hi, Susan :)
I am not an expert in this field, but some decades ago, I watched a documentary on opera singers and they pointed out that overweight singers have to put less effort into their singing. If such singers were to lose weight, it would be extremely difficult for them to achieve their former level of vocal range, capacity, and volume.
Thanks for your kind reply :)

No singer has ever moved me like Elvis. You have fantastic performers, great singers, creative artists, and then there is Elvis. He is inexplainable, a force of nature that comes along one every 10,000 years. We are lucky to have these clips of him, he is part of history, simple as that. Loved from Iceland to Timbuktu, never again will we see someone like him. He ticked all the boxes, a giant, the Godfather of music.

Elvis Presley and Jackie Wilson were very good friends. In 1975 Jackie Wilson had a heart attack on stage. he fell and hit his head and went into a coma , Elvis Presley paid for all his medical expences for his time in the hospital. Jackie Wilson had to go in a nursing home after leaving the hospital.Elvis Presley passed away on August 16th 1977. In his will he wanted to keep paying for his friends expences up until Jackie wilson passed away in 1984. Elvis Presley was a very giving and caring man.

"Well the image is one thing and the man is another!" May not have that quote exactly right, but he knew his image at that time was different and was humble enough to get out there in front of thousands to give it his all! His voice never failed him and in fact was even stronger! The media had the nerve to criticize how he looked...so disgusting of them! They would have been in bed hiding from the world, but Elvis truly loved his fans and sacrificed himself for his fans! His autopsy revealed his heart was 3 times the size it should be and had 3 previous heart attacks he was unaware of! God gave him the strength to give us these last amazing performances! May he RIP! Thanks Ray for your awesome commentaries! You're the best! Feel better!

here's a few links of adorable moments Incase you haven't heard them..sorry no video but im sure they will give you clear visuals of what it probably looked like..when i listen to them i can see them play out in my mind.
my favorite thing is when the fans would say something to him and it would remind him of song and he would go off script and just belt out some obscure song that he'd never done on stage and the band would just have to hang on pull something outta there butts and follow him
things he only did that one time because the fans brought a memory of something to him.
after yrs of listening to the fans behind the stage scream TURN AROUND TURN AROUND
one night in asheville this happened
      "turn around look at me"
      ruclips.net/video/5ZPTxTBKx7k/видео.html
and on stage in vegas when a fan was screaming COME HERE he reassured her with a few lines from "I'll be there"
then tells the band to give him a d cord and launches into "Your The Reason I'm Living" and it so sweet and beautiful...also never done again another once in a lifetime treat
      ruclips.net/video/iAOZYGnYGNs/видео.html
And when he spur of the moment decided to do his only live performance of Rags to Riches during his legendary 1976 new years eve show in Pittsburgh that is so completely stunning and beautiful

I know you know of Leon's channel & I am in LOVE with his From First Take To Master series.
I also remember seeing a 1975 Las Vegas performance of "Fever" that was phenomenal. You know I've heard some put Elvis down, saying that the 1973 Aloha concert was his last best concert.
But after digging into post 1973 Elvis I have to say I don't agree with that.
His 1974 Memphis, TN concert just sounds amazing plus it was for his live rendition of "How Great Thou Art" at that concert that earned Elvis his third Grammy.
So how can anyone dismiss that?

For starters, Elvis was a damn TANK! That never changed nor did he. Thank You for not turning a blind eye on his final years. There has been so much bullshit written and misconceptions over the years. Why? Ignorance and personal agendas, ie $$$. It is complicated, but the things I could tell you regarding '74-'77 alone would definitely make your jaw drop. It would also frame things into a perspective that finally makes sense. Just remember, Elvis was/is on a completely different level. And if 'they' finally released the entire truth to the Elvis story, it would no longer be drip fed to the ignorant public, would have no longer have a long lasting effect, meaning no long term residual $$$ for the bottom feeders and those in power of his legacy. Business as usual. Smh

@Phoenix7878. Bro, I couldn't agree with you more. I say ELVIS had more talent till his last breath, than every one including some so-called "fans" that always want to spotlight his health, being experts on medical issues, rather than his talent. No one knows anything for sure, except he's no longer performing, since 1977. Nearly all these commentors say the usual crap, and I for one will stop reading them. THANK YOU.

Aww Ray....I am so grateful that you are giving your time and effort to discover who Elvis was and share it with us. I hope when you see the doctor on Monday you get
answers and relief from your back pain.
For me and many Elvis fans by 1977 the love for him was so strong that nothing could change that love......not problems....sickness....how much he weighed etc. This gospel song was sung at his funeral and at Lisa Marie s funeral. My eyes fill with tears watching him sing this beautiful song... knowing he
is so sick and won't be with us for much longer...but as always he is magnificent and gives us all he has left to give.
We love you Elvis and we won't forget you...❤️ Sending love to you too Ray for all you give to his memory and for just being you....💕🌻

I believe the colonel put him on a treadmill to earn money and didn't care what it did to him. Like others have said, check out the 1972 live version, stunning! Love your reactions Ray, brilliant!!

This is my favorite song by Elvis. I’m 78 years old and recently became obsessed with him after seeing the Elvis movie. I was only about 12 when I saw him on the Ed Sullivan Show to young to appreciate him and didn’t know the story. I read that he’s the only artist in all 4 music hall’s of fame , country, blue’s, gospel and of course rock and roll. In my day if just mentioned Elvis’s name my dad went off like a rocket\. He believed all the bad things that were said about him in the beginning. I wish we could have talked about it.

2:04 Wow, brother. Powerful and poignant words they're describing his situation and what it was like for him to do what he did even in that state. That is probably the most beautiful expression of that that I have heard yet. I feel exactly the same, and as a musician and a singer I totally get how good this is. I have maintained that even though his asthma was really starting to show plus with his other health problems, his Mastery over his voice continued to grow right up until the day he died basically. I mean he is so operatic here it's insane, and while most people will say that the 1972 version is the best one, and it is absolutely fantastic, for some reason, once I get used to watching him in this state, I prefer this performance. Not only is it more ambitious than the earlier version, he sings the earlier slower Parts with so much nuance and feeling, it's astounding. And then when he goes operatic at the end, wow. And also, he is asking the vacuum choir to do a lot more than they did in the earlier version. They do the longest rotating sustained. I think it's like 35 seconds in total. Just tremendous all the way around.

At around 3:50 I'm tearing up. Elvis' voice literally reaches into your heart and wrenches out your soul at 8:00. Seriously, sometimes it hurts to listen and to watch him. I always avoided the 70s footage, because he didn't look like Elvis, but he sounded like Elvis and his voice has grown and magnified as he got older. What am I saying, older? He was never older... just evolved. I'd gladly trade all of the stars and "greats" of the last 30 years to have Elvis back for one hour. What a talent, naturally gifted and a powerful presence.

He wasn't just sick here, He died 2 months later. I can't watch this concert without tears, knowing the pain he was in, and how soon he would be gone, and still he poured his heart and soul into every word and that beautiful, magical voice never let him or his fans down. I got to see him in concert 4 times and I had tickets to the Omaha show in this video, and I didn't go, if I had known there would never be another chance, nothing could have stopped me. I love seeing people discover Elvis, feeling and telling people what I've experienced and been feeling since I first laid eyes on that face and heard that voice 60 years ago when I was 5 years old.
