In todays video we take it old school and take a look at a British TV Show called Tattoo Fixers. I Covered some of the controversies back when it was on air, now that the dust is settled I thought I'd take another look at just how bad the show really is..

I was fortunate enough to get a free cover-up tattoo from a friend who was training as an apprentice. I had the Chinese symbol for 'crazy' tattooed on my hip when I was 17, and had wanted to get it removed or covered for years. I'd recently lost my job, and my friend initially quoted me £50 which I was happy to pay, but halfway through tattooing me she said "by the way I'm not charging you for this". She said it was because it was her first ever cover up and she didn't feel right charging me, but I’m sure it was really because she’d heard I’d lost my job. Two years later and it still looks great. It's a little bit patchy in places, and some of the lines are slightly blown out, but you can't see the original tattoo at all. For a first ever cover up by an apprentice, it looks incredible, and far more impressive than many of the tattoos I've seen on Tattoo Fixers. Oh and the cover up was a black heart with white stars, a purple border, and a pink and purple hibiscus flower. I lived in South Korea for 5 years, and the hibiscus is the national flower of Korea, so it was a nice way to symbolise a country I love without being culturally appropriative or insensitive.

@@bittertoothig Yes she is! She co-owns a studio in Birmingham with her friend who trained her! They opened the studio whilst she was still an apprentice but she’s fully trained now. Her apprenticeship was put on hold because of Covid, but she practiced on her husband 😂 He’s an artist too and I think he only had a couple of tattoos when they got married but he was a very enthusiastic guinea pig!

I have the Japanese Kanji character for "beauty" on my ankle. It is mortifying. I've had it since I was 17 (I blame the 90s). I pretty much forgot about it until I read your comment, lol. I really need to book an appointment to get rid of it!

I live in Japan and people here make fun of foreigners with weird kanji tattoos a lot, but I feel like with "beauty" even people here wouldn't be too weirded out! Don't feel too embarrassed 🩷

Is it just me or did that "Wand" somehow just looked extra "phallic"? I mean the artist made it a point to call her princess and be gross about the inicial tatoo and then he comes up with this heart-shaped wand that honestly just looks like balls on a pencil 😖? Worst of the cover up designs by far. The bat was cute as heck!
Apparently Paisley was an actress (same with Tom the receptionist from Celebs Go Dating) with no knowledge of tattoos, yet in that last clip she was so much more empathetic and understanding than Alice, asking the woman if she was OK and offering her a sugary drink etc.
I would love to have Paisley comforting me during a painful tattoo, she seems lovely!
all TV receptionists/waiting staff are all people the casting agents find on casting websites so are all models, in acting of some sort, like all the waiting staff in First Dates (obviously Fred and Merlin(the bartender) are exceptions and are actually these roles irl) are all found on these websites
I actually don't hate the EAT ME tattoo 😈 it's rather funny, not visible for people who shouldn't see it and I kinda like that it's a shitty font 😆 a fun "fuck it" tattoo

That’s the kinda tattoo I would keep until I got a tummy tuck or a c section scar revision and then just have it cut out. Fun while it lasts and shame on anybody who made her feel bad about it
I though the same but the problem is, it's not actually non-visible. It's below the belt but above the pants line, so you always need to wear trousers to cover it up. Not so hidden when at the beach, a swimming pool or in a changing room.
Both pants' and bikini bottom's rises can be high or low though, not all bikini bottoms are low-rise@@lollertoaster

One of my favourite BTS things I learned about this show was the 'clients' don't decide what they're getting on the day between 2/3 sketches, they know what they're getting weeks in advance😅

I always assumed they consulted with the production team, one artist made a tattoo, they agreed to it before and then the other two were just random things to make it appear like a choice. It was why I assumed some of the drawers were not at all what the client wanted, or silly concepts. I thought they were either for other clients and just shown here, or they were last minute sketches
@@laynasnow8550 also the show makes it looks like the sketch something up in 5 minutes when those sketches would take at least 30 minutes😂
The princess tattoo honestly kinda impressive. The small lettering is so sharp and clean for being 9 years old on the inner arm skin.
This is one of those videos where you suddenly feel better about the tattoos you usually regret a bit. 🤔
And you're right, the snarky comments from the artists are unprofessional at best, outright offensive at worst. No professional artist should ever use shaming in any of their interactions. Just makes me feel like: why would an artist go on a show to gain visibility and then come off as a huge jerk? 🤦♂️

It’s also so disgusting that she used the word “vandalised” when it’s about someone’s body. Like we talk about vandalising public spaces or a shop or something not someone’s body!!! So objectifying and disrespectful!!

I was such a fan of this show when I was 12 😭😭 actually this show gave me the idea to cover up a scar that I didn’t like bcs before then I didn’t knew that you could tattoo on scars. I learned so much about all the range and styles of tattoos possibles thanks to the show. It’s so sad to learn that it wasn’t like it seemed. My child self was let down lol :( Thank you treacle tats, I got my first tattoo 4 months ago and before my appointment I spent 2 months watching compulsively all your videos and thanks to you I did the right research and changed the Pinterest tattoo for a more special/personalized one. I learned so much truly useful information from you and that definitely made me make the right decision in regards to my tattoo 🥹🫶🏻
There's a relatively new show called "Tattoo Redo" on netflix, with basically the same concept, but higher quality as far as I can judge. Just in case you want some of the nostalgia with better tattoos haha

There is a French version of this show called « Tattoo Cover » and I looove it! The artists are really sweet and super talented! I watched both and yeah… a whole different vibe !!
This year started so badly for me. I got my tattoo fixed and added some elements on it. A few days later I got a huge allergic reaction to it and my whole left body was red and itchi. I went to see a doctor because the medication I took against allergies didn't work. He told me that it could be possible that it is a bad skin illness which I got through the process of tattooing. He gave me really heavy medications to see if it's really that illness or just an allergic reaction against the ink. This was one week and a few days ago and it came out it is just an allergic reaction but I still have marks on my side. I am still taking the medications and I am just happy that it was just that and nothing more concerning

my back piece is the same with ink allergy. i know over the counter ointments like hydrocortisone works for me, depending on the percentage your doctor recommends a little goes a long way, it's a temporary solution for the flare ups. 💖
I'd love more videos like this!! there was one guy in an early season of this show whose tattoo was just one that said "I'm on me holidays" on his arm and every time his wife asked him to do work round the house he'd show her his arm and go "I'm on me holidays ha ha" and I was FUMING watching the episode!!

I have my own & if she's into symbolism at all, they're actually really good; other than the normal darkness & death people normally associate, bats also represent intuition, vision, dreams, communication, seeing different/new perspectives, facing inner demons, illusion/mystery, longevity, prosperity, & happiness! 🦇💜🤓

I wonder why they took it off Netflix. I will admit to watching it just to see how bad tattoos could be a couple of summers ago after I had just had my first tattoos done.

knowing reality tv shows, I would bet money that a lot of the “weird” comments that the tattoo artists made were scripted for them to say that. especially the “vandalised her body”. was probably the non tattoo having producers writing
the 'eat me' one isn't that bad honestly lol it's small and can be hidden literally all the time. must've been awkward at the gynecologist tho
The cover-up is giving womb tattoo which I honestly think is worse, she really should've lasered it off instead
It's so interesting to me to revisit this show now that I know a bit more (mostly thanks to you Lauren!) Now I am more aware of the problems but at the time I was so ignorant and I just thought all the tattoos were amazing 😂
I will say one thing though; the show did get me thinking about getting a tattoo seriously for the first time so I suppose in a funny kind of way it was part of my tattoo adventure that I'm grateful for if that makes sense!
I personally would have leaned into the Eat Me tattoo and made it look like an Alice in Wonderland Cookie, add the drink me bottle to add the flair, but I understand the choice to get it covered as well

Jesus no wonder that last one was in so much pain! The red marks either side looks like they've had key hole surgery and they're still healing 😢 after a month of both of mine (surgeries) I couldn't even move without hurting let alone get a tattoo on my stomach 😭

Wow yeah I see what you mean and I’ve also had that surgery and you are so right, that area is SO sensitive for so long, and her marks are quite red. Hope she’s doing ok poor girl

I don’t think those are surgery marks, it looks more like another self made tattoo ➗➗ Doctors wouldn’t close “little cuts” with one single huge staple, they would sew it up…

When they were talking about the “eat me” tattoo, before we knew it it was, I was real curious & concerned! But then when they showed it, and I rolled my eyes so hard they fell out of my damn skull because that is NOTHING🤦🏻♀️ I feel like that’s such a common and silly tattoo, and the way they reacting is so overdramatic.

In the US we had Tattoo Nightmares, which is pretty much the same concept. I don't remember everything about it, but i do think my appreciation and eventual love of tattoos started with that show!
I used to spend a lot of time in Camden and "Sketch" reminds me of the guys who would hit on my underage friend, thats all I'm going to say about that 😬🤢

I’ve got around 50 tattoos and some of them I fell asleep as the artist worked. A few weeks ago I had a tattoo that starts on my foot, up and around my ankle and up the whole of my shin. Omg the pain. I tapped out after 4 hours because myself and my artist decided to get to a certain point where the tattoo, although not the full design, looked finished. I’m going back on Friday and booked a day sit so that I can take breaks and we can take our time. Love your reactions Lauren, you make me laugh so much! 😂

I think the “eat me” tattoo would have been so adorable if they’d made it into an Alice in Wonderland candy or cookie with the script left in place (or not).
We had our tattoos (my first but not my partners but this is the time we needed a cover up) done September 21. We had gone in and spoken to an artist. Basically I'm a glitter tattoo artist, I had used my partner as a model during a gig and they loved it so much they wanted to get it done for real and I was going to get the same. The artist loved it and was really excited, she even wanted to use my stencil for it. So day comes around and for some reason she isn't there but another artist is going to do it. First thing, we were told we didn't need masks in there (I'm a wheelchair user so I'm obviously careful with my health). Secondly he wouldn't talk to us before, he obviously wasn't happy about it and she'd given us a discount because it was two fairly small matching designs so didn't charge us as two people. He was sending someone out with messages for us, for example, we have the ND infinity and he sent pictures saying did we want it as a spectrum or stripes. I wanted to talk to her on the day about how we were going to do it and suggestions on where because I didn't want to affect my chair use. He got angry with me and said "if you're not sure you're going to have it on your body forever" that wasn't my issue. So during the tattoo he's going on a rant about not being vaccinated (remember we were told we didn't need masks) because it's all fake but when he had it he thought he was going to be left with brain damage from the pain in his skull. I kept trying to shut him up by saying "my dad is currently in the covid ward and we're not sure he's going to make it" (he died a week later) but he didn't take the hint. So my partner had sort of slapped their arm and said about there, he took them literal and put it on radial side of their arm just below the elbow so it changes shape as they move. It was done what we've called colouring book style, an outline and badly coloured in. The black section looked marbled it was so badly coloured in (on both of us) and the coloured part was not good. It was supposed to be woven but the corners didn't match and were rounded. Being the ND infinity it was supposed to be a spectrum but he gave us lines.
We had it tidied up. Mine now looks more like a glitter tattoo and more blended but it needed thick black lines to fix it which I never wanted. My partner's is so bad that there wasn't much to make it work so it's been made bigger and kind of sketchy. It's pretty cool though! We won't be going back to that first one again.

I think of the people with very small tattoos just go on to get a tattoo for free cos laser is by far the better option for those tiny tattoos cos then you can pretty much get whatever you want after
The American version of this show was called Tattoo Nightmares and I just went back and looked at the three artists instagrams and uhh…….. it ain’t good sis
I remember that show! Some of the stories of how people got their tattoos were wild. Maybe they were embellished for the show, but having been someone with a somewhat colourful past, sometimes the truth is wild!
The minute he said "please the princess" I yelled ew😂 How awful!
What I enjoyed about this show was the original tattoos and the stories or how the clients got them. Some of the stories were hilarious.😂
I used to watch tattoo fixers all the time, stopped watching because of the attitude of the artists and how sometimes they would criticise clients and make comments about them or the tattoo. Like yes it’s a bad tattoo but most of the time the tattoos are done when the person was young or drunk, like common I’m sure most tattooed people had/have a “bad” tattoo. They just want help to cover it and leave feeling worse or degraded by them. sad to see 😢
Not only was the artist who drew the wand being super gross but he didn't even listen to what the client wanted. Also I fail to see how that design would even work as a cover up...

I only have a few small tattoos but recently got a Tiger Shark jaw band around my left thigh. The back of the thigh was SPICYY AFFFF. My artist said “when I was tattooing the back of my daughter’s thigh, I thought I heard her laugh, but she was crying” & I was like “I don’t blame her bro” in one breath as I’m holding back tears 😂 my rib tattoo hurt less 💀
Literally watched a snap chat story thing while in a waiting room of this the other day and I thought it was weird, they made some rude comments to the lady getting a cover up on her neck. Now seeing this it's crazy that one clip showed how weird this show was.

My mum’s friend, who is a tattooist, got asked if he wanted to do Tattoo Fixers. He said no because he had the “self respect.” to not go on it.
I used to love Tattoo Fixers, in my teens, but i look at them now and just think they’re bloody awful
When I was about 13/14 I was obsessed with this show! Now I'm almost 21 I can see all the red flags in Alice but I can't lie when I was younger I found her hilarious 🤣 I think I just liked the pure honesty 🤣
But now I 100% see the red flags, wouldn't wanna be tattooed by her now I can tell you that! 🤣🤣

My dad, who is pretty heavily tattooed, tapped out early and had to get numbing cream for his next session for the first time in his life getting the back of his thigh done recently 😬 I just know that’s a spicy spot to get done
i have one im getting finished soon on the back of my thigh and the first round wasnt too bad (just line work) but im d r e a d i n g getting it filled in 😭 especially the spot thats in my knee pit 🤢

I remember watching videos or clips of this show a few years ago now. I think you’re the person I originally saw it from, actually 😂 I guess I liked this to see people’s tattoo regrets (mostly tattoos done on a whim were my favorites). Not many people will go on national TV and show bad tattoo choices! I didn’t pay much attention to details (like sizing of the coverups, darkness, and artists being a bit sketchy), but it made for some interesting things to watch when bored.
i just got the side of my knee tattooed and needed this (didn't think it'd go up at that high and he saw me dying and was like we're tapping)

You can tell it’s cold in there from the girl that got the bat. When they show her bat up close after being tattooed she has extreme chill bumps! 🥶
I used to watch it, enjoyed watching it too but back then i wasn't critical or picky when it came to my own tattoo's so i never really picked up on just how bad that show was from a tattoo enthusiast's perspective. Now however i am very critical about tattoo's as I'm learning how to tattoo and seeing these again makes me feel so bad for the people that went in for a cover

Omg I had no idea there were so many seasons lol. Holy crap I need to see them all - I must find the whole collection lol. I'm in America and I was only ever able to watch I believe the last two maybe three seasons via streaming - I remember there was a brother situation, possibly twin artists. I found the show extremely entertaining but then I'm bit partial to British reality tv - y'all have a way of delivering insults that is truy chef's kiss 😂😂😂😂😂

I have to admit that I watched the whole series and liked it. BUT I had no knowledge about tattoos back then! After diving into the real world of tattoos, I realize how bad these tattoos and the show were.

I had two tattoos that i did 3 laser sessions a piece on. One was a design i didnt love. It was ~fine~ but not what i wanted and the artist guilted me into it by saying "well ive already drawn it and everyone in the shop loves it" so i got it anyway. The other was a tattoo that i got with a group of friends that later caused me a lot of trauma.
After three sessions, i got them both covered by two different artists. The other artists in the shop when i got the big one covered were commending me on doing laser first to ensure they could do the best job possible. They also made me feel super tough for sitting like a rock on an inner bicep cover up with laser and scarring. It was a great experience (incredibly painful though lol)

At the time this was on I would discuss it with my tattoo artist friends, and 'apparently' Sketch was also known as 'Scratch'. Says a lot about his skill.

I think it seems the one cover-up everyone chooses is the only properly designed drawing, and the others just make a silly doodle on the spot. The difference in quality between the bat sketch and the others is huge, and I think the simple flower with the swirls in the last one was more of a joke than anything to be taken seriously. Btw, the princess tattoo was surely somethng a friend made for free at a party or something like that. It was so poorly made I highly doubt anyone would make that at a professional setting.
