  • This rare film shows Lockheed California Co.'s tests of the NASARR radar system, in preparation for installation in the new F-104 Starfighter. The family of radars termed NASARR (North American Search And Ranging Radar) were built by Autonetics, a division of North American Aviation that produced various avionics. The F-104S received a NASARR R21-G with a moving target indication and a continuous-wave radar illuminator for semi-active radar homing missiles, including the AIM-7 Sparrow and Selenia Aspide.
The R-14 system was installed in the USAF F-105 Thunderchief and the more advanced F-15 system with Terrain Following capabilities was developed for the USAF F-104 Starfighter which were also used by NATO, MAP, and the Canadian Air Force. Both radar systems allowed Time On Target (ToT) impact control capability with a high degree of accuracy. The R-14 and F-15 systems used (pre-solid state) electronic vacuum tubes in their designs. Both systems were developed, built and tested at the Downey (Slauson Avenue), and Anaheim facilities.
The film shows various demonstrations of the radar system including flights over Palos Verdes in Southern California and the Mojave Desert.

Very nice. I worked on an example of the modified DC-3 in Cold Lake Alberta in the late 1970's. Our aircraft was named Pinocchio and the nickname was painted on the nose. There were at least 2 other NASARR DC-3s with the RCAF/CAF, Dolly's Folly & Woody Woodpecker.

I am VERY impressed. This is 1960s tech, and it IDs ships and terrain features! Stunning! And a range of 20mi air to air?! WOW! And an 80mi navigation range! 😲

Impressive system...anyone know if this is what was in the rack of “jerry cans” behind the pilot in late 104s?

the jeep cans contained all the avionics and electronic systems, they were in these containers so they could easily be checked and serviced. ruclips.net/video/fChqJY9VzTU/видео.html this video contains info on that as well as the development of the F-104 itself, very interesting stuff.
