Ms.Rietz, Your eye for color is AMAZING!!!! I paint just to please myself, not professional just barely amateur. This video has inspired me to not be so ridged and to “let loose” !!!! Millions of Thanks to you for sharing such valuable trick of the trade. Bless You!
Oh my! Unbleached Titanium is MAGIC! I'm so glad i found this video, ive been struggling with the "paint straight out of the tube" habit... i love the colors but couldnt figure out why my paintings just weren't working... this is definitely what's been wrong!!!
@kathleen_rietz_artist because I tend to be lazy with color mixing, I'm going to premix alot of these colors into pots so they're ready to go. That, and I tend to just dip straight into the pot of paint lol 😅
This is so beautiful Kathleen! I have taken several of your classes, but have not painted in quite awhile. You've inspired me to pick it back up again! Love your work so much!
I have never used unbleached titanium before. Thank you for sharing, I need to try. I use the opposite colour to reduce the vibrancy+white. Is it the same effect as unbleached titanium? Is it the way to create such white? Maybe mixing all primaries + white will create the same effect?
Hi Anastasia! Mixing a little of a color's complimentary color will certainly tone it down, and there are some beautiful, rich grays that can be made using complimentary colors. To harmonize a palette I this way, you could mix a color that is made from equal parts of all of your colors together, and then mix a little of that color into each color on your palette. That will harmonize your colors. This video is really just about the quickest and simplest way to harmonize a palette, made for beginners or people who have never attempted to harmonize their colors before and are new to the concept. I may film a demo eventually that shows the more complex way of doing it, but I use this method the most because it is quick and easy. I use titanium white as a separate color on my palette, as you see in the video. There is a white paint called transparent mixing white that will lighten colors without changing their temperature, but again this video is more about harmonizing colors in simplest terms. Just a fun hack to introduce newer artists to understanding colors and how they work together....or anyone who wants to try it. I love how it makes my colors look.
@@kathleen_rietz_artist I definitely going to try this quick way with unbleached titanium. Thank you for sharing! I really love the painting and thank you for sharing your process!
No, I rarely use water. I prefer to use the paint either straight, or mix in a little retarder of glazing liquid if I want the paint to be a bit looser. Hope that helps. Happy painting!

Hi Kathleen, do we always have to mix acrylic with water? Before mixing it with titanium or unbleached titanium?
