- Today I want to show you how you can create breathtaking depth in your paintings by using my simple approach for layering. This video will remove the confusion and simplify the layering process for you, giving you confidence in your painting process next time you approach the easel.
The tools I use in the video are a Princeton brand Silicone wedge, and a #10 filbert brush. A little glazing liquid is mixed into my paint when I work on the sky.

@@eunicekimber7141 Thanks so much.
You are extremely talented! A couple of questions…where did you use the paynes gray? How do achieve the foggy look when you apply the white flowers on top of the other flowers?
@@carriewall5431 Thank you. I use Payne's gray to tone my greenery and deepen other colors, such as creating a deep, dark purple by mixing it into quinacridone magenta. I give my painting a misty look by adding in glazes to soften my edges.
Very beautiful, thank you so much!💕🙏
Hi artists! Let me know if you find this video helpful!

Hi there from the Pacific Northwest. I just ordered the Princeton size 6 silicone white catalyst and a KingArt 6500 size 10 filbert, and I already have glazing liquid for my skies. I tend to paint landscapes but when I happened upon your video here I loved your paintings! I've been wanting to try flowers and botanicals anyway but I wasn't thinking impressionist! Gorgeous work you do! Thank you for inspiring others to try this style!

Thanks so much, Matthew! I hope you'll give it a try, and enjoy your new art supplies. The wedge is not an easy tool at first, put so much fun once you get the hang of it. I'll check out your channel...I love landscapes and just posted a watercolor wildflower landscape video.

Thanks! I am happy my work inspires you.
@kathleen_rietz_artist I just started painting last December because I wanted to make my daughter's and Granddaughter's something for Christmas. I paint bottles and wrap the tops and put lights in them. And have sold quite a few. I have purchased some canvases with the thought of branching out. Seriously I didn't even know I could paint. And I'm 69. Your's are stunning. Have a great day.
@@LindaBeaver-s7i That's fantastic! Art is such as wonderful practice, such a gift. I have online art courses for beginners, if you are interested. Here's the link: kathleenrietzartist.thinkific.com/

Thank you!
What a beautiful painting Kathleen❤
I’ve been trying your technique but seem to over work it. I’ve been using a filbert more, I know the wedge is amazing but I find it harder to work with. Going to try using the corner or a silicone brush instead.
Thank you for sharing your technique here on RUclips.
The wedge is not an easy tool to master. I always believe artists should have fun experimenting and trying new tools and techniques, but always seek to find their own style and what works for them, not copy others. When it feels natural to you, you will know you have found your style.
wow......chapeau for your awesome fantastic work !

Es ist nicht einfach wie es aussieht 😂. Vielen lieben Dank für das wertvolle Video ❤🙏
You are very welcome! Yes, not necessarily easy...but I have been painting for most of my life. Maybe you will try it, too?
❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great video! I have a question- do you plan out your composition ahead of time, and if so, how? Do you use reference photos?
I usually have an idea in mind regarding composition, but I also give myself permission to change it if I want to. I use a mix of planning and intuition. I don’t use references except on occasion when I paint a more specific flower such as hydrangeas.
❤❤❤❤
Your art work is so Beautiful and Dreamy looking, I love it!
Maybe you have answered this question before, but where do you get your plastic wedges that you paint with at?
Thank you for the compliment. You can find Princeton brand Catalyst silicone wedges at art supply stores and Amazon.

@@teresadouglas6308 Very welcome!
From Spain. Ms. Kathleen, I would like to know if you are painting with acrilic paint or oil. Thank you. Please, excuse my english. Glad to come across with your web.
Hello! This is acrylic paint. Thanks!
Very beautiful, could look at this painting all day! Question: what brand and type of glazing liquid do you use and what is the consistency or viscosity of it before you mix it with paint?
Thank you. I've used both Golden and Liquitex. I do tend to like Golden brand glazing liquid a little more. It's hard to compare the consistency to anything...it's sort of like retarder, but dries a little more quickly. Hope that helps. Thanks!!
This is so beautifully ethereal and lush. Would you mind sharing all the paint colours you used? Thanks
Thanks! Yes, I used: quinacridone magenta, titanium white, unbleached titanium, lemon yellow, pthalo blue, Payne's grey, Hooker's green and/or sap green.
I purchased your hydrangea video saturday.. please update the video with all the colors you used.. I learned a lot watching.. I used to do oil portraits and this is my first time using acrylics.. because this video lists the colors I’m going to jump ahead and attempt this painting.. I hate facebook..too many notifications and you can not shut them off.. so I’m going to either post my comments on here or send you an email.. God Bless.. dorothy smith😊
Hi there! If you are asking what colors I use in the "Hydrangeas Gardens" course, there are downloadable PDFs of the supply lists included with each demo, and also they are mentioned in the subtitles on the screen.
The Facebook group is a FREE bonus I offer to my students, something many course creators do not offer, and something most students appreciate and respect. That is where to go to ask questions, find support and post your art. I am sure you can imagine how much time I would spend and how clogged my email inbox would be if everyone tried sending files and questions outside of the group. You can silence you Facebook notifications in your Settings...I have done so myself with all of my social media apps. Otherwise I would never get anything done.🙂 Hope that helps, and thanks!
@@kathleen_rietz_artist thank you for your rapid response.. I’ll check out the pdf supply list.. May God Bless You and Yours.. Dorothy

How do you keep your paints wet while you work? I like that misty look.
I use glazing liquid.
Did you add anything to the paint when you created the background for this painting? Some kind of medium for example!
Yes, a little fluid medium to extend the paint and make it easier to spread.
😊😊😊ㅡ👏👏👏
Admiro muito o seu talento na pintura. É pena não ser traduzido em português. Bem haja por partilhar suas maravilhas. ❤
Gostaria de saber o que é que está a utilizar para pintar, é uma esponja, ou é outro material?
I believe if you turn on your closed captions, there will be subtitles in your language you can choose. Thank you.

Yes, all of my paintings and courses are done with acrylics.
