    Rules point: overdrive and unstable are completely separate. You don't need to be in overdrive to use an unstable action, and you don't end overdrive with unstable actions. The thing they have in common is unstable (if you fail the flat check) and overdrive (if you crit fail the crafting check) both go offline and need time to reset.

    To be fair I really don't like the inventor, due to what I can only consider forced flavor, in the form of unwanted features, such as with the explode ability.
    Sure you could just ignore half the abilities, but at that point why are you playing the inventor in the first place?...
    And why are you forced to handicap yourself instead of picking a different feature, if you don't want to play some sort of crazed lunatic?...

      I do have a bit of an issue with the flavor of the two Guns and Gears classes at times. They still a bit tough to fit into very traditional fantasy settings.

    Hmm I think the Investigator would be more appropriate for this video instead of the Inventor, because like the Swashbuckler, Investigator can just deal a big damage once per turn, Investigators when using Devise a Stratagem and Swashbucklers when using Finishers. Both of their damages are pretty mediocre when not using their special ability.

      I almost did that, especially since the Investigator and Swashbuckler are both precision damage builds, but I really like that both Panache and Overdrive are a state that requires a skill check to enter, which enhances both static damage and has a few other benefits. I thought that was a pretty compelling reason to compare these two.

    I've think saying swashbuckler have a harder time getting panache due to there not always being enough room is a little disingenuous. I get what you mean, but tumble through doesn't require you going all the way through the enemy. You can stumble through into the enemy square and move back to where you were.

      You know I never thought about that. I suppose you can just tumble into a square and back out of it. Though I definitely have seen times where the swashbuckler can't tumble through due to movement speed and the distance to the enemy, especially with that pesky rule that the enemy's square counts as difficult terrain.

      It's one of his least favorite classes, alongside with Oracles, which are funnily enough my two favorite classes in the game since they were first released 😅
      I imagine he's gonna leave it to the very end and I can't think of another class to compare Alchies with.. they're so unique, aren't they? 🤔

    One big advantage for the Swashbuckler is, that they can regain panache as many times as they want, they just have to do any of the required actions again, whilst the Inventor will be offline for the rest of the encounter once they lose out on their overdrive and/or fail the unstable flat check.

      Oh that's a great point I should have added. In my swashbuckler video I talked about how a good swashbuckler build can lead to chains of great rounds where you use a finisher, regain panache (like using the You're Next reaction) and then use a finisher again.
