Biggest, Best, and WORST Class Changes in Player Core 2 - The Most Important Player Core 2 Updates

Alright adventurers, today we're looking at the biggest, the best, and some of the worst changes to the eight classes which were updated as part of Player Core 2. Which of these pf2e classes came out ahead, and which maybe took a bit of a backslide? Can alchemists continually contribute? Does the barbarian hit even harder somehow? How does a champion function without alignment? What does an inv...
Investigators Get Some Huge Upgrades in Player Core 2!
Просмотров 520Месяц назад
The Investigator has been one of the more popular Pathfinder 2e classes over the years, but it did suffer some mechanical problems and left a bit of room for improvement. Thankfully Player Core 2 has come around and offered up some relatively minor changes that actually have a big impact, and of course one HUGE change that drastically improves the few weak spots this class had.

It's time to look at the biggest, best, and most impactful changes to the Sorcerer in Player Core 2. The Sorcerer is a class that has always been simple and reliable, but some of its abilities were a bit tough to use and often fell by the wayside. Let's take a look at how Blood Magic has been improved and also see what other tricks the Sorcerer has picked up in the latest rulebook from Paizo! 0...

Alchemists in Player Core 2 Still Need Fixing - Proposed Errata Changes

What's Wrong with Pathfinder 2e Alchemists? Looking at the Alchemist with Sample Builds (pre PC2)

Though I do love the flavor of the alchemist class, there's no denying that it has some very problematic mechanics, at least as of now. However, this is a class that is due to be updated in Player Core 2 and, fingers crossed, should come out WAY ahead of where it is now. prepared spells is a big limitation; the sorcerer should be balanced with less spells per day but isn't. It is instead limited by less spells known, which to a careful planner is less of a limitation than it sounds. In Dnd 5e 2024 they removed even this limitation making wizard basically a worse sorcerer in most situations.

I was wondering, if I have a Kineticist of Metal and Wood, and I use Metal Carapace and Timber Sentinel. When the tree dies, let's suppose it takes 15 damage (it has 10 life), the remaining 5 damage would hit me. Can I use the Shield Block action to avoid taking that damage? The steel shield has a hardness of 5. What do you guys think?

    • @RebelThenKing
      @RebelThenKing 2 дня назад

The tree produced by Timber Sentinel does not require using a reaction, so it could be used in conjunction with shield block. However, RAW, Timbers Sentinel doesn't protect you - only allies. That's because the corresponding spell, Protector Tree, states "Whenever an ally adjacent to the tree is hit by a Strike", and you do not count as your own ally (see the How It's Played video on this). Were I GMing though, I'd probably allow it to protect yourself.

@@RebelThenKing I forgot that part, so I think it's not possible unless the GM allows it. Shame. =( I would like to take the opportunity to ask a question that I forgot to include in the post. The metal carapace shatters if I take critical damage, right? One thing that I would definitely add would be someone with a Tower Shield, using Raise Shield consistently. Perhaps the champion Perhaps the barbarian. The benefits of the tower shield, just raised, Alone grant the rest of the party improved COVER AC (+2 circumstance) Free, if the that ally gains cover from that tower shield. Automatic and free upgrade. But if the ally spends an action to take cover, behind the Tower Shield ally... They gain a +4 cover. @@RebelThenKing I might be a bit of a broken record, on the tower Shield front. And I realize it's a burden in its own right. But a speed boost to compensate. There is even a nice cheap long duration speed boost spell. If the feat or ancestry are out of reach. Our party didn't have a tower Shield for several levels, and recently they upgraded... And its made a remarkable difference. Quite a bit more challenging as the DM to ignore or bypass that tower Shield.

What Ancestry would I add. I think your barbarian would do well with the Hold Scarred Ork. The option to just ignore one time that they would get dropped to Dying. Add in the increased Dying level 5, and the improved stability recovery checks (lower DC) Ork and Barbarian also both have good or great HP right? Add in. Is it Toughness? And it just might be a fairly resilient start for the Barb. Hood Scarred Ork also seems like a great starting narrative for the Spirit Barb... As they clearly have some ancient trauma to channel. For ancestries: Sorcerer human, because of natural ambition and level 1 reach or widen spell, champion and swashbuckler elf, because of the speed bonus, and to ensure that champion will not slow down they should go to live with dwarfs to learn their ways with armors (so that they can take adopt ancestry [dwarf] at level 3 and then learn unburdened iron at level 5, so that their full plate does not slow them and they get deduct 5 from all the other effects that would give them movement penalties, like removing -5 feet penalty from tower shield or halving -10 penalty from fortress shield). For Babarian , human (natural ambition -> two barbarian feats at level 1 without needed to pick fury barbarian), orc (orc ferocity -> continuing fight after going to 0 hp is just perfect fit for the barbarian) and minotaur (large -> being large makes barbarian even better front line smasher) are all good options. For alchemist, either human (natural ambition -> soothing vials and alchemist familiar at level 1) or halfling (Distracting Shadows - hide behind team mates and halfling luck free reroll every day for skill checks and saving throws is always good option)

17:04 Hmmm... I think Alchemist, actually had the biggest improvement. And, perhaps, moved from one of the 'worst classes' (struggled the most) To a very respectable balanced class in the system. I'm not certain, if they moved up to top 3. But they certainly are not bottom, anymore. Swashbuckler, was middle and unremarkable, A mediocre Rogue alternative which, did not function well, despite some cool narratives trying to distract us from mediocre mechanics. Now, swashbuckler seems to function. But again, they weren't really a worst class, just a mediocre middle. So you wanted to try something different from, the Fighter or the Rogue. So you got excited by the narrative salespitch for the Swashbuckler. Then, you ordered it, opened the box, and found that the Swashbuckler may not function exactly as described in the infomercial. And it just kinda did almost everything less effectively. Now, I suspect we'll see more Swashbucklers, perhaps we'll hear... "Do I want to play a Monk, or a Swashbuckler?" Is it THAT GOOD now? But. Alchemist. We might hear, do I want to play a Ranger? Or an Alchemist? Not certain we'll hear. Do I want to play an alchemist instead of a Rogue , quite as often, but. All told, quite exciting changes.

17:00 I... Think that one thing might be the best part of the adjustment to Panache. Look at maybe Demoralize. Its still a one time thing versus a specific enemy. We generally cannot Demoralize an enemy, more than once, (per PC) But. Can the swashbuckler use Demoralize on them again, even though they have temp immunity? And gain temp panache, for a turn? Allowing you to use repeated, non stop, JibberJabber, griefing the enemy in a stream of Yo Mama jokes... To sustain your panache basically non stop. Excellent.

I'm less familiar with it premaster, so Remaster and Player Core changes, I'm consuming advice and experience from others. It is an interesting dynamic. +/- 1... Just should not make THAT much difference... In the grand scheme of things. And I think that quite often they don't. Except for those clutch moments when it's the - 1 Debuff curse that deflect the boss kills trike... , or the +1 buff, that made that turns an ally miss into a hit or Crit... Those clutch moments when we notice the +1 that mattered. I think those clutch moments might outweigh the majority of times when it's actually the overwhelming advantage that swung the tide...

i never understood why people didnt like the alchemist. right from the start of 2e, the damage it did was on par with casters but you had to have the right bomb to hit weaknesses, which means lore rolls and preparation. if your party was co-operative for example the fighter did things like group up enemies, the alchemist was likely to be the top damage dealer. On top of all this, it could hand out buffs. Mathermatically the numbers seemed right but i guyess this one of the cases where it has to be mathematically overpowered to make up for random parties.

I once ran a short campaign for some friends that was a riff on the storm kings thunder campaign. A friend came with a sorcerer who was supposed to be a reincarnation of a long dead lesser deity of winter so all their spells were cold and weather themed. In the first session this wasn't a problem but since the rest of the campaign was about fighting Ice Giants on frozen tundra and mountain peaks we came up with a (character) lore friendly work around which has become a staple magic item in my campaigns. Spontaneous casters can find a magic spell tome that allows them to; once per day, replace a spell in their repertoire with one from the spell book as well as store their previously known spell in the book. The book can only store 10 spells and can only store spells up to 5th level. Over the next 3 sessions that player had replaced almost every spell they initial had and sometimes swapped back and forth for some utility during exploration and was happy to return to theme when the next campaign moved south for some island hopping Piracy. They still have the book but I'm pretty sure they don't have a single spell it originally contained in it anymore.

I think you kind of missed talking about the way that Pursue A Lead now being based around answering a question rather than pursuing one specific creature makes it MASSIVELY easier to use Devise A Strategem as a free action. For example, I'm playing one in my current game and our group is fighting our way through a thieves' den right now. Old investigator would have been pursuing a lead related to the crime boss we're trying to stop, but now my investigation questions are "who is leading this thieves' guild?" and "why have they suddenly started attacking city watch patrols?" So now it's much easier to use the free action version of DaS in encounters throughout the den as we explore it because we're fighting thugs that I believe will get me closer to solving my investigations. It's a subtle but very significant improvement to the class.

2:43 Quite an improvement. Not gamebreaking. But. Good. Playable. Functional. Good.

Why would I skip panache when it's so easy to get? I call my enemy a smelly poopoohead, get panache, stab them for extra damage. Run away.

I'm pretty excited with what they did to strategic assessment. I'm tempted to make a ranged investigator for my next character!

Ran a fire/metal kineticist in an epic level three-shot. Skill junctions are definitely no joke, especially fire. I was adding +38 to intimidate checks. Scare to death was getting kills. Never underestimate the power of adding a status bonus to skills. It often puts you above and beyond skill thresholds of your level.

+38 to intimidation at Level 3? Or do you mean a 3 session game at like level 18-20? Otherwise, can you explain how? I can't picture getting higher than around a +10 with Expert in intimidation, an item that grants +1, and perhaps a Critical Success on an Aid check? Maybe a little higher with status bonuses from something like a Bard or appropriate spells

11:03 Also similar to a Kineticist picking up a splash of a different element.
