One of my favorite memories is being a kid and buying Earthbound, and seeing the game box size on the shelf because it was enormous against the regular SNES games.
I really enjoy how you did this episode, I know 19 minutes of Derek isn’t long enough for us. You can really tell with all 4 different games that they would truly make or break the experience for someone. Your recommendations should really be taken into consideration. I actually paid a guy in Canada whom I found online to turn another NES game with a battery pack for save games into Mother for the NES for me. I shipped him the dummy game, paid a fee and provided the translated rom etc and he was able to turn , I believe it was Tecmo Football into Mother for the NES. Printed the red label etc, it was the realest looking fake you ever see and it worked. Played like a charm but ended up losing it in a flood years later. The whole series has a special place in my heart.
It's interesting how names are localised for US releases, usually to represent more individuality and competitiveness over ideals of collective progression

I appreciate that you promote that and make such great shutouts to the dedicated fans, who go out of there way to make a fan hack or quality translation. :)
Yeah! Not sure when, but I do plan to tackle 6, 7 and 8 next time I have the chance. But for my 100th episode special I'm going to be covering Earthbound and Mother 3 next. :)
@@SuperDerek when you said that soundtrack had a direct line on your heartstrings I felt that. Some of my earliest memories are of playing earthbound in the 90s, when I was just learning to read. I listened to home sweet home the other day just thinking about that. Super excited for your reviews of the other two, and the DQ games as well 💖😁
I'm lucky enough to have a Wii U, so you can bet I grabbed both Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings day one when they were available, and honestly, Nintendo is basically throwing away money not making them available on the Switch in some form or another. Still, I urge anyone with even a mild interest to give the games a try. Forget about the fanbase, the tumultuous localization history, the bizarre internet legacy, and just let the quirky charm of the games take you on their playful, emotional journey
My cousins had earthbound back in the day but they would never let me play it. Well that ends today!!! I'm loving it so far. I'm gonna play it on my breaks at work tonight.
I have a nostalgic attraction to the official translation even though they are less accurate because they reflect the values and attitudes of the time. Its part of the nostalgia trip for me. Also the music in mother is very special.

It is so awesome that you started this. I am currently in the middle of my Earthbound Beginnings Playthrough. I am playing on a Repro on the Original Nes that I got a few years ago. I believe it was from Timewalk Games. Came complete with a Box and Manual. It is Grind heavy but I am happy to play the game in its purest and original fashion. Playing with Nes Advantage controller has made it really easy and relaxing as well with there being diagonal movement and all. Plus the other little nuances that it makes playing the game easier and more satisfying with. I just got to Yucca desert tonight and wow is it big.
This was a fantastic episode! Earthbound is one of my favorite games and to see you tackle the original is just wonderful! Always keep up the great work!
I hope after you do the Mother games you'll talk about Legend of Mana, I've loved this game back when first came out and playing again with the remaster has been a blast.
I hate the original's grindiness, so knowing the 35th anniversary edition exists is very, veeeeery useful I also will try out the Easy Mode hack for the original because I like the og artstyle

I may just have to try to get the 25th Anniversary edition, but I'm curious if you know if it will play on a retron 5, so I can play in HD? Maybe i missed it but which console did you play it on? Have you heard of the Mother Encore project? Looks like a promising reimagining of the first Mother and I feel that it could become the definitive way to play the game, you should check it out one day (have no idea when it'll be released lol).
@@SuperDerek so since last month, Sony has been copyright claiming Earthbound music from the first 2 mother games. The reason is due to sony releasing a Vinyl record for the game last year to celebrate the series 30th anniversary. Sadly, I can’t think of a way to stop this, it’s affected a lot of people, especially Chuggaaconroy. Thankfully, they don’t own the rights to Mother 3’s soundtrack. That was done by another company, so thankfully if you do Mother 3, you’d be fine with that one
No joke about the ending mobs at the end of the regular version 😹 I got stuck with enemies way too strong and not enough healing items. Looked the ending online. Still a fun game 👍

Excellent review. It is a very difficult game; I barely got through by the seat of my pants thanks to Teddy-everyone else in the party got creamed haha. You are right about the bare-bone visuals, though. The game feels very bleak compared to Earthbound. Love the channel

I just finished Mother 25th anniversary, and its terrible. I couldn't find anything I loved about it. The story was weak, I felt no connection with any of the characters. My whole point in playing through it was to prep myself for Earthbound, which I also have never played. Some of the tunes were ok, but for being a 1989, it didn't even look good. Welp, hope Earthbound is better. To be fair, I never heard anyone say a good thing about Mother, so I didn't have any sort of expectation.

I played the cartridge on a RetroAVS, it's a lot better than a Retron 5 (mine broke early one sadly,) it's an FPGA clone console with HDMI output. :)

I haven't actually played mother. Earthbound was my only foray into the series.
I revisit the mother series every couple years. I love them all but at the same time I can’t recommend mother/earthbound zero to anyone I know.

I enjoyed Earthbound and Mother 3. Skipped the 1st one since I heard it was grindy.
The 25th Anniversary edition makes it not grindy at all. Definitely would recommend checking it out :)
