I have IBS and severe social anxiety. I had absolutely no idea that since I have IBS it could be the thing causing all/most of my anxiety. I was always told it was the other way around by doctors and therapists. I watch these videos for fun and learned something that could actually help me, I’m speechless.
I love that Hank is so passionate about digestive health and regular poops. Everybody poops! Previous generations were ashamed and dismayed by talking about such subjects and now it's commonplace and I LOVE IT! Please don't ever change Hank, the world is a better place with you in it. 😃
After having health issues some years ago I began fermenting almost everything to have a strong surplus of bacteria in the stomach strengthening the microbiome and microbiota and I've had a consistantly stable good health since, so from my own anecdotal evidence I definitely support gut health.
I used to have really bad digestive issues, my doctor diagnosed me with IBS. Then I went vegan and now I digest perfectly :-) No need for fiber supplements when I'm eating a whole food vegan diet. Cutting out dairy helped so much too because I'm lactose intolerant -- or what should actually be called "lactose normal," since 75% of the world's population cant digest dairy without problems. I used to take those lactase supplements, but they didn't really work. If only I had known that going vegan would feel so amazing, I would have done it sooner!
This! :) Many friends that have gone vegan have a much better digestive health and habits. I don't understand why Hank only shows one side of this story? (oh wait, I actually do..) Eating plants instead of beings will logically reduce cholesterol ánd increase your intake of fiber. And less animal products means a different microbiome with healthier bacteria :) I actually might want to specialise into the microbiome during my Biology master!
This is so right! I have anxiety and take Rx for it. But when I got bronchitis I had to take a strong antibiotic. Well that kills EVERYTHING in your gut, including my good bacteria. When the infection started to improve I started to have UNBELIEVABLY HORRIBLE ANXIETY! I mean it was the worst I have ever had, for DAYS!! It was the worst week ever. I felt better after the antibiotics were getting out of my system and I started taking a high quality probiotic. But man, it PROVED that your gut controls your brain!! Great video, thanks hank. Didn’t know you were such a Metamucil fan, but congrats on the endorsement. 😊
The Metamucil plug is literally the only sponsor plug I have watched all the way through xD Personally, I'm just glad I have an answer for why stressing out so much at one point in my life affected my gut so much I gave myself IBS for a couple days. Gosh darn enteric nervous system.
We love the channel(s) and we love Hank and we want him to be happy and successful. We know Hank has a special relationship with Fiber. The relationship between sponsorship ($) and content is a serious thing. By the standards of professional journalism, for reported content to be considered impartial, sponsors can have no influence on it. I think in this case, we can say there was influence by Metamucil. It’s humorous. It’s well meaning, but it’s still influence. I really like and respect SciShow and I hope this is a one time thing.
So interesting that point about gut and mental health. Kurt Cobain was a manic depressive and he suffered severe stomach pains. He claimed that this was the source of his poor mental and physical which he used to drive his anger fuelled songwriting. He 'medicated' his stomach pain with heroin long before becoming a rockstar, but it shows the implications of a poor gut health. In his autopsy it was confirmed that he had poor gut health with ulcers bordering a twisted stomach.
But you know what? Da man got a point. Even if you don't go in for the Metamucil brand, taking a teaspoon of psyllium stirred up in water once a day will make yer gut a LOT happier--which I learned from my grandfather, a Metamucil user from the 1940s on. It sure as the dickens helps _my_ gut, even though I'm taking an off-brand generic. Psyllium is pretty much psyllium, fortunately.
I am so happy Metamucil supported this episode! YAY! :D Hooray for productive and thoughtful corporate relationships that aim to improve the lives of everyone!
I've been coeliac for eight years now, and I'm also finding I have mental health issues around food. I'm going to therapy for it but amazing to see you guys here mentioning the direct correlation between disorders that upset your stomach and mental health.
I've suffered from IBS for quite a few years now and my mental health (most notably depression) has been strongly linked to the IBS by my doctor. A better diet that didn't trigger my symptoms has genuinely helped me feel better, even though I still get quite sick from time to time, my mind has been clearer for some time now
Thank you for such a wonderful video! By the way, there is a specific molecule that is cholesterol that serves many services including being the molecular precursor of bile acids, steroid hormones and keep lipid membranes fluid. But in our popular culture uses the term cholesterol generically to describe the particles that are made up of lots of molecules including fats (lipids) and proteins such as low density lipoproteins.
I’m so happy for you Hank! A Metamucil sponsorship! Congrats! (I feel like this comes off as sarcastic, but I promise I am genuinely excited for you 😊)
Ok, I expect to see a Hank happy dance about this on Hank's Channel or the Vlogbrothers. It is great to see a RUclips personality sponsered by a product they love.
I had horrible gut issues for months and they were undiagnosed and unexplained. I got so depressed and seriously down hill once I got on the right medicines for my stomach my depression started to resolve ! It's true!
Never knew how useful my digestion was until the mid 30's. Kidney stones and epilepsy caused extreme changed to diet, me resisting, having seizures on the same consistency and new stones, changing to a different kind of diet, then literally watching stones drop off and seizures be managed better without adding more medications
I love that he's able to say that he's become happier because of his improved poop. That's the taboo-free mindset I'd love to see us all adopt, as it would help with many problems.
Thank you so much for this video.. I am living proof that if your digestive system isn't working right, it harms everything! I was 85% impacted and its not joke or fun.. Not sweaty, constantly waking up dripping sweats soaking my bed.. I had no idea why.. I would turn my air, I live in Florida, down to 65 because I just couldn't get comfortable.. I ALWAYS got a cold, the flu, I live in FLORIDA FOR GOODNESS SAKE, HOW!? Finally learned.. You need pro and prebiotics.. Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar, 2tbsp a day really really helped!!
I was in the ER Sunday morning with diverticulitis. I thought it was a recurring kidney stone attack; I’ve dealt with kidney stones in the past even to the point of lithotripsy. But I have been mistaking diverticulitis for kidney stones for years. I have become a fan of probiotics and fiber. I’ve started taking Metamucil; and then, you upload this video! 😀
Yay, at last! I've ploughed through so many comments congratulating Hank on getting sponsorship. Friendly, but strange. The recommended dose of this supplement may be 10 grams per day. It's highly concentrated. But when I make chicken dhansak, I'll be eating more than 100 grams of lentils. So even if they are 10 times less effective per gram, the dosage is the same. They are also tasty, filling and a heck of a lot cheaper!
Lentils are good. Oatmeal is also an excellent source of insoluble fiber that I can easily eat every day. Chugging a glass of psyllium husks in water is a disgusting alternative to eating actual food with adequate fiber. Metamucil and its generic equivalents are just psyllium husks with artificial sweeteners and artificial colors which only make them extra revolting IMHO.
people are congratulating him b/c he has spoken about how it really helped him in the past and that his video about them wasn't a sponsorship, just him finding something that really helped, but he'd love to be sponsored by them. He's had a lot of bowl issues, mostly ulcerative colitis, so he's had a shitty time of lots of things, so metamucil helping a lot and now sponsoring him def seems like something to be happy about. Cholesterol attaching to artery walls is a natural process, but again too much is bad. Reason it, arteries are hard... hard means brittle for the most part. So that means they crack (high blood pressure), plaque is suppose to fill those cracks temporarily until it can be repaired. High blood pressure can be both a symptom and/or a cause of clogged arteries. Exercise causes high blood pressure during, but there is rest after. Having high blood pressure all the time, doesn't give time for the arteries to heal.
Having lived very happily without a colon (like many thousands of others) at all for nearly 30 years, I really do not buy much of this idea that the gut flora is “important” in the way some seem to think. These observations may be real but as far as I can see are quite incidental, considering that during life a few bouts of diarrhea can clear out the intestine leaving ir free to be colonised by new organisms. Furthermore it doesn’t seem advantageous for evolution to make us highly dependent on anything that could vary in such a way. At the MOST any effect of gut flora is fine tuning. So really those who sell stuff to make our guts “healthy” by probiotic and prebiotic supplements should cut the crap (pun intended). People without colons do not live less long than average and any who do then generally it is a result of surgical complications.
Dear Lynton, I can recommend the fun to read book 'I Contain Multitudes' by Ed Long. It shows the science behind this 'idea' without trying to sell you any supplements ;) Glad to hear you're doing ok without a colon. But this is anecdotal evidence, not telling much about the benefits of a healthy microbiome. That's not how science works :) Take care!
Dear Veganbackpacker, As a PhD Microbiologist with 40y working in the areas of food and nutrition science and who, among other things led an EU funded project on probiotics in animal feeds until I got ill and retired. I really need nothing to teach me any of the Science behind this. It is very interesting to look at the interactions of the human and our microbiome but the facts I mention should really make those working in the field understand that although a culturally valid and scientifically interesting field of research, the relative importance of findings is VERY limited as far as significant effects on human health. In animals such as ruminants that depend entirely on microbial breakdown of cellulose and other nutrients into absorbable fatty acids for their nutrition there is probably more scope for pre and probiotics as food additives for health but remember what we want with animals is to increase weight gain- quite the opposite to aims in humans. The microbiome and its contribution to human obesity on the other hand is something that has borne fruit since microbial transplants seem to affect this. Faecal transplants in infections by Clostridium dificile too have helped recovery of patients from an otherwise very difficult and sometimes fatal infection particularly in geriatric patients an others who have underlying illnesses. So any young enthusiastic microbiologists out their doing research- do not get carried away- use your common sense and get things into perspective.

I agree that intestinal health is is imperative for over-all health but in addition to having regular "movements" probiotics are just as important for "regularity" and of the utmost importance for a healthy immune system. I'm a paraplegic with special needs as far as bowel care is concerned and must use a bulk forming supplement to stay "regular", but I find that psyllium based products have a nasty habit of causing gas and cramping and since I cannot "pass gas" in the normal fashion this causes extreme pain and unpredictable and uncontrollable flatulence that I find intolerable. Instead, I use a product called Citrucel, which is not gritty and readily dissolves in water with a smooth orange flavor that is not at all disagreeable and doesn't have the unpleasant side effects that came along with the metamucil. Well, that's my two cents worth, your results may vary, but for me, the Citrucel is a far better product with the same basic results and none of the unpleasant side effects.
Considering that my husband is in the hospital right now, waiting for a multiple-bypass surgery...the subject of cholesterol and plaques and all this is of interest. Especially since I'm eager to NOT do the same thing hubby is doing, and I'm just as at-risk as he is :( I have books to write, I can't die yet.

HANK! You finally did it!!!
Psyllium recipe. Mix two spoons of psyllium, yoghurt and summer fruit in machine. Leave sitting for a couple of hours. Serve.
Well, that’s awesome. Hank, you deserve to be sponsored by Metamucil.
My digestive system is garbage rn so this came at a great time
Thank you for making these videos!
Come collaborate in Detroit!
Hank got that Metamucil spon!!!
