My 1GR on LPG costs $13 per 100km on the highway. Had it since new, 260k, silky smooth, has never missed a beat and doesn't burn any oil. I run fully synth and change oil every 10k, no leaks. Only problem was a starter motor change at 150k.
Thought about upgrading to the new Prado, but I can't stand the lack of power.
Is it gas injection? If so like to know more...
I had an LPG vehicle years ago, best of both worlds. Petrol for power, gas for economy. I think lpg burns better/cleaner and doesn’t contaminate the oil, so engines last longer. Mine was well over 400k when sold and all good
Good info mate. Got a 3.4 and has served me well , looking to update in the next year or two and you have got me sold on the 1kd .
Great fireside chat conversation with rare no bs common sense advice - after nine Subarus I’ve now joined the Toyota community due to the intro of the CVT in Subarus and despite being in SA I managed to get a much-loved 2010 Auto Hilux diesel in Melbourne - I have total confidence in this vehicle’s ability and will build a tourer with Aluminium canopy etc - your technical updates and servicing advice will be great to follow - John in SA
I am a diesel mechanic and worked on hundreds of these vehicles. I agree with you 100 percent. I do want to add, iKZ, injectors need to be done every 70-80 000km. Don't chip or modify them. They will crack pistons if you neglect injectors or chip them or crack heads because of the higher exhaust gas temperatures. The 1GR, is more sensitive to overheating. Watch the bottom corners of the radiator, A slight leak, causes pressure loss and slightly higher engine temps that won't always reflect on the temperature gauge. Because everything is aluminium, the heads and blocks can warp more so than the diesel which are a bit hardier in this regards. Oil changes... oil changes and more oil changes like you said.
You have covered everything else and I can just go and repeat all you said....
Great video man. Thanks for the info. I have a 2004 tundra 3.4 l manual trans 4x4 here in the States and I've been looking at swapping a 1KZ into it. Seems from what you say the 1KD is the way to go. The only diesel I'm used to working on is my 12 valve Cummins in my 1996 ram. I love that engine to death. I like the idea that the 1KZ doesn't have common rail. Guess I have some more research to do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Good info, own kzj78 with 1kz-te engine for 6 years (350km)with no problem, except ecu need to be refresh.
Nas, greetings from Malaysia 🇲🇾
Awesome a lot of knowledge & learnt a lot as well. Keep up the great work Anthony.
Hi from Russia! I had 4Runner 2000year
1KZ-Т 125hp. with mechanical fuel pump, 312Kkm, fuel consumption 10-12l/100km; Now i have Hilux 2013 230kKm. 1KD chip tuned egr off 213hp/490nm., fuel consumption from 9 up to 13 l per100km when towing 2Ton. My father have Prado120 2008. 1GR 212kkm. Consumption 12-17l per 100. All cars not have problem! Toyota the best! I dreaming buy Land Cruiser GRJ76!
Love my 1kz manual prado 90 series, i'm getting 9-10L/100km, and around 12L/100km for 1-2 days of hardcore beach driving
I have a 1KZ-T in a LN 106 hilux and I changed the thermostat to73 degrees to help prevent cracked head issue
Hi, do you use the same trani or you had to use the train that came with the kz, I'm thinking about swapping engines
I've been told that most 1kzte crackheads because over fueling bad injectors in Diesel engines over fueling create heat
Love the 1KD acceleration sound! 💯😍 the 1GD is okkk.. but it’s too silent. Toyota definitely needs to offer the 1KD again in the Prado, Hilux and the Fortuner! Pakistan used to give the 2kd and the 1KD in the hilux but they’ve changed it to 1GD. Really need the 1KD back
they had to change things up due to carbon emission laws in 2016 i think?, that's why they made the 1GD, which came with a DPF which silences the exhaust a bit
Why would you want a 1KD over a 1GD? The 1GD is superior, and much better to drive with
@@erfederizo
1. No DPF
2. No DEF
3. Been sold in Australia for 20 years, so there's enough history on the engine (Avg. 20,000 Prado's sold in Aus every year)
4. Simple-ish EGR system that can be mostly blocked or even completely removed
He has rebuilt many many engines, and isn't just a single 1GD owner.
Please do a video of the 1KD startup and smooth accelerations while in Park.
I have a V6, Tows 2 tons all day, idles for hours while I sleep in it with AC on, when I'm fatigued on the road. drive it like a race car, abuse it, service it myself after every 10k. Its on 270,000km MY2006. Still going strong.
After building many diesels, I can say that all 4 valve per cylinder direct injection diesels have glow plug issues over 200,000km. Unlike old diesel glow plugs which have thick tips, new glow plugs have thin tips which erode and/or break off. I often find them hammered into piston crowns
To suggest that the V6 is bullet proof or doesn't have issues is just simply not true, but they're also a very good engine and a lot less hassle for the owner should they do their own servicing etc.
Mine has done nearly 360k with no major issues. I purchased my V6 with 180k on the clock, at the time ANY diesel was about $15 - $20k more expensive in the car yards, and probably more so now with the pandemic. People often forget to include the higher initial purchase price with their calculations of economy. I previously had a 1kz Hilux, and it was absolutely shocking in terms of fuel economy or performance. It was a slug that drank the fuel with absolutely lousy performance should I tow anything or want to overtake on the highway. Getting back into a petrol with the 120 V6 was such a breath of fresh air. Would I buy another V6 - yes, would I consider a newer diesel - yes. Would I buy anything other than Toyota? NO WAY!
i have a 1GR 120 Grande with 50mm lift, standard size AT tyres, fridge with DCDC charger and drawers- in town doing very short trips (less than 3kms) start and stop traffic - fuel consumption as measured properly everytime at fill up time (not reading what computer says) is between 17L-19L/100km or more; towing 1.3 ton loaded trailer on 60km/hr to 110km/hr touring over backroad and easy dirt road is 19-22l/100km. Best runs on 80-110km/hr unloaded or 4 people in it gets consumption down to 11.5-13l/100kms. its the stop/start, speed variation that kills fuel consumption on a petrol;
i would choose a 1GR if you are mainly city based, only do mostly hi-way touring, only tow occassionaly and/or you are buying a second hand with unknown or less than stellar history - that 1GR engine can endure some serious neglet, but you pay it on fuel cost. 1KD is great if buy it from new or low km or with a well looked after history and you have experty to keep it run properly. If keeping long term some of the additional maintenance cost will reduce some of the fuel saving when choosing a diesel.
oh yes 1GR does have great power on overtaking even full loaded with family and 1.3 ton trailer
🙏🏻💪🏻
Having had both 1KZ & 1KD, in terms of driveability the 1KD is far superior.
The 1KZ is not too bad offroad. It has a lot of torque & it is down low in the rpm range. Although torque is purposely limited when in 1st gear which can show on steep slope starting in rough country. However the 1KZ will not happily rev to red-line, in fact you will get more acceleration if you back off a tad on the throttle & allow the gearbox to change up a gear & this puts the engine back into the peak torque range. The 1KZ also came with just a 4 speed auto, which meant acceleration struggled as it had to rev more, before it could change gear to come back down to peak torque around 2000rpm.
Towing anything with any sort of weight or wind resistance basically means you are stuck in 3rd (1:1) & reving quite a bit at 100km/h.
In saying that the 90 series 1KZ auto being a fair bit lighter than the 150 series 1KD off the mark was a fair bit quicker, reaching 60km/h quicker & in a shorter distance, but the 150 would soon catch it & then pass it.
The 1KD on the other hand, will rev to redline & still be pulling all the way, it doesn't run out of breath, it's not a petrol but it keeps trying. In addition it has a lot more torque & power which improves driveability & the 5 speed auto gearbox also helps a lot to keep the engine in it's torque band.
IKZ 3L Indirect injection 93Kw 343Nm 4 speed auto (4th overdrive)
1KD 3L Direct injection 127Kw 410Nm 5 speed auto (5th overdrive)
old comment but 1kz did not only come with 4 speed auto, i have a 5 speed factory manual 1kz prado and it goes super hard, outperforms safaris on the beach
Good unbiased advice really! I rate all 3 engines highly but I went the 1GR 150 series as the Mrs scoots around town in it and runs up and down the highway most of the time. I use all 202kw when I want to tow big things at the speed limit and my diesel Patrol is used for 4wding and camping.
Different tools for different tasks.
"Prado" means "field of grass"! and Australia is a desert of yellow clay 😛only agree with you-different tasks for different tools 😝
Good information, thanks.
1GR-FE V6 4.0 front timing cover oil leak. What a huge job. Also had to replace the two stuck VVTi solenoids that broke. Also replaced waterpump and 3 O-rings in timing cover. Permatex ultra grey is good stuff.
Damn that sounds $$, I’ve noticed a slight leak coming from the valve cover on my Ute recently
My 3.4L V6 uses 14.5 L/100km, doesn't burn a drop of oil, doesn't crack pistons and still use the original factory injector at 320,000km.
Hi mate, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am about to buy 2007 prado 170k 1KD engine. Is there anything I should have a look while inspection? Cheers
Do you have any experience with VQ40’s? Nissan’s 4.0 V6. I assume it’s similar to the 1GR FE.
Mate I do that drive down Plumpton every day, AND NOW I HAVE TO WATCH IT ON RUclips!!! HAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!! Great vids....
1KZs are also famous for turbo failures, oil ending up in the intercoolers!
I am using 1kz for about 14 year. This engine never disappoint me❤
Where do you work mate, id love to take my 1kd hilux in for a full service bye what sounds like a highly experienced professional
which is better engine 1kz or 1kd,thank you, from philippines
Much appreciated for the info you have provided, I have a Prado j95 with a 1KZ-TE A/T, I've always suffered bad fuel economy, any suggestions on what I can do?
Maybe air filter and injectors
Will a 2007 Hilux 1KD be able to be trasnplanted into a 2011 Prado 150?
Hey Anthony, do you work on 1gr?
Is the 1kd hilux with 4 speed auto any good?
So which is better 1kd vs 1gd
Diesel quality is low here. In pakistan. 1kd failed miserbly and 1kz also have problems.. plus 1gd cant stand 2.3,years or more. .due to very very low quality.. so most of us shifted on Petrol. . The 2.7 n 3.4
The diesel quality is bad yes but depends area wise as well. But these engines are tough and reliable especially if you see the 1kd that came in 2017 revo. The 1kz was actually good and many old landcruisers use it. 1 GD that was introduced in 2018 still running great even now in 2023. So I have to disagree with you
Same thing in Saudi Arabia! Is 1GD sensitive for fuel quality?
@@mohnnadmercedes8246 I personally suspect the denso injectors toyota use are sensitive to fuel quality. Most toyota engine failures on diesels are caused by faulty injectors, which cause cracked heads or cracked pistons. Most of the stories you find on the Internet about toyota engine failures are from Australian's from what I've notuced.
Which makes me wonder if its the diesel in Australia causing the problem?
@@flatoot Yeah we dont have the greatest fuel quality in Australia. You should change fuel filters more often
@@flatootthat’s absolutely correct. Most of the 1kd injector issues are reported in Australia. These motors are sold in big numbers in India in the Fortuner and maybe some Innovas, I know most Innovas have the 2kd (2.5 lt) motor. But no reported issues on Indian forums, FB groups etc.
What I found out was that India was using BS3 (euro3) diesel till 2017, when they switch to BS4 (euro4) which was in use till 2020, and then they switched to BS6 (euro6), skipping BS5 altogether.
Now, as we know euro6 diesel is limited to 10ppm Sulfur count, and it has been in use in Australia since 2009, while the same time India was using euro 3 diesel with 300ppm Sulfur count.
Reducing Sulfur also reduces the lubricity of diesel and adversely affects the high pressure fuel system including the fuel pump and injectors.
This is the only reason why I think the majority of injector issues are reported in Australia, barely any in India.
These hardline pollution control laws are absolutely killing our cars.
My old man had a 05 hilux. Sold after 480,000km hardly serviced but still kept going 😂
Hey mate im looking to buy my first car and i was wondering if you could give me any information about the Hilux Surfs/4Runners. I heard that the 2000 - 2002 versions have the 1kd but I havent seen any for sale so far so I might just be looking at a completely different market. On the other hand, if the 1KZ is more than fine do you reckon I just go for that?
Get a 1KD.
I love rhe 1GD economy: 12.5l/100kms towing 1600kg across Australia. 5th gear @ 1900 rpm.
Towing a van buy a LandCruiser with a 1hdfte in my opinion from someone that owns a diesel 120 and a 79 with the 1hdfte there's no replacement for displacement in the predicament of if I should be selling the 120 and converting a 105 over to a 1hdfte
Recently saw an article of a 1 million km 1KD 2012 hiace in new zealand allegedly only replacing the alternator and starter, serviced every 10k kms. Impressive stuff considering all the bad stuff ive heard.
Quite good as long as you service them
What these articles often miss is how diligent the owner has been with oil changes and maintenance.
The 1KD manual oil grade spec states:
G-DLD-1, API CF-4, CF or ACEA B1. You may also use API CE or CD.
Think about that for a minute, API CD was introduced in 1950!
Cheap but 6 monthly oil changes are the sweet spot for this engine.
The reason the prados go more often is the use of the vehicle, towing huge 5t caravans. Off roading and doing chips and tunes
Hi Mate, Need your help in a matter concerning 1Kz, have a prado 1994:KZ78. Now i recently changed the engine & auto, well everything was working wonderful until i took her to hills & a highway! As soon as i crossed 80km the temperature gauge started to rise. I had to drive it at 80km, at that speed all things are ok. P.S i have changed all the oils with genuine replacements along with Aisin red coolant! Checked the fan it had no oil in it, got it filled but even then the outcome is the same, need your help desperately
also the radiator was flushed before the engine swap! I had no such problems with my Pajero D456, which although was under powered but never gave such problems!
Too hard to remote diagnose
300,000 km almost , i change the engine oil every 5000 km without fail, Never touched injectors never failed... yet. I do 1100km a week, every week in my manual 2011, The wife has a 2010. I want to put Hydrogen injection in both Hilux cars. I did that in my LN167 Hilux and that engine did 740,000 km before the 5 speed manual gearbox failed and at $2500 for a 2nd hand one i sold the car for parts . I did notice that the KUN26 Hilux cars are very light in the rear and handle alot better if you put about 100 kg in the rear tray.....
Allen
14L/100kms daily driving is pretty average for a 1GR, I'd probably be more around 15-16. Lowest I've seen is 10L/100kms going 100km/h with an unloaded car. Fully loaded at 100km/h saw about 13L/100kms. All awesome engines just buy the one that suits you better 👍
Highway yes, it's great, but that's not the average. My LC200 V6 also get 1/6 in the mountains and sometimes offroad(1/8.3) when fully loaded and RTT.
diesel needs a lot of maintenance. that's y I went with petrol.
Disagree
@@Fourby4Diesel more frequent oil changes 2 filters at a time
there goes the difference of fuel saving.
you cant park it for more than 2 or 3 days especially in cold weather or you will risk gunk problems.
the rest or the problems you mentioned in the video is hit or miss
Wrong
Nah maintenance for diesel engine is less, the only expensive is the oil,you need to buy 2-3(4l engine oil) because of high displacement(cc)
2kd (vnt version) is even better than the 1kz
Luv ya mate. Would you be interested in voicing a mechinc character in a funny NZ cartoon?
Maybe but it sounds complicated ha ha Ha send me a text message and let me know more thanks
this is the reason i left all the prado forums mate, so much b@llshit spread about the 1KD from people who do not own one and have no idea
Old Toyota L engines are better than this all electronic engines. I mean standard 3L and 5L engines.
Prado are the best car ever made - You should have released this video on 1st April.
all the diesel have cambelts
Incorrect
Four years on and we now know it was a complete con
