What a great moment for Kevin Lepage, I’m sure that’s what he’s remembered for
I remember him winning the 98 Busch Bristol night race because I was there. Oh and something else that happened a decade later in the same series.
It'd only take an incredibly stupid event to erase his great legacy
For sure
@@P8ndahe is even better at Talladega. He kills it there
DJ Kennington making it in 2017 in a photo finish with Elliott Sadler is a good forgotten one here, also the 2020 Suarez DNQ for an upset. Man GBR has been a part of these moments time and time again lol
Missing Kirk Shelmerdine from 2006 Duals. It took five tries to finally make it. It remains the only one he qualified for in seven tries
Even though he missed it, some of us would have liked to have seen 2007 when 72 year old James Hylton, in a car that ran a top 15 speed in qualifying, was in a transfer spot with ten laps to go when a caution flag flew. On the restart, his clutch failed and he fell back and out of a position to qualify for the race. in the last quarter of the race, he was the main center of commentary by the race broadcasters.
Hylton missing it after that last caution was the biggest heartbreaker.
This is a trip down my childhood! I remember all of the ones after 2003. Thanks Nascarman. RIP John Andretti.
18:26: "What does ( Michael McDowell) have say about all this?" I am going to win this race eleven years from now!
I was kind of hoping to see Cole Whitt making it in on the final lap in 2014. Especially since he caught damage in practice, only to have to race the repaired car because Parker Kligerman got ground to pieces against the catchfence a few minutes later and Swan Racing had a combined total of one backup car that week.
The Intro of this video is a masterpiece. Great use of montage and sound track
The Charter System has destroyed the magic of Speedweeks.
I want to know more about that Lepage #37 car. That thing was fast. Top 10 in the race
As confusing as it was the pre-2005 and 2013-2015 style of Daytona 500 duel qualifying (non-locked in spots) provided the best system. We may never get it back bc of the charter system.
That John Andretti one hits different now. Miss that guy
The Top 35 Rule was the dumbest rule at that time. A knee jerk reaction to a bunch of big money sponsors missing a race the year before.
And the charter rule was that on steroids
Yep. That and the charter system completely ruined these races. At this point they should just have regular qualifying and set the field that way. The duels are an unnecessary risk for 95% of the drivers.
@@insightworld422 Charter System (Race Team Alliance) was started by the team owners to protect their interests. They forced NASCAR into a box. Ironically stuff like the top 35 rules contributed to it with big teams and sponsor being bumped out and the 500 being the biggest payday. No teams = no NASCAR so they did what they wanted.
Look, you are gonna kill me, but in the first 3 years of the Top 35 rule, from 2005 to 2007, the entry list improves from 45 in 04, to 57 in 05, to 58 in 06 and 61 in 07
Love that you included Scott Riggs in '09. That was such a feel good race for me.
Also, John Andretti. ❤️
Forgot 2000: Dave Marcis' 30 year streak of making the 500 ends
And 2012: Joe Nemechek and Dave Blaney race their way in during duel 2
Starting in 2001 these duels were televised live for the first time. In the CBS/USA eras they were tape delayed then aired on Saturday after the now called Xinfity Series race.
The year Bowyer flipped coming to the line when Johnson ran out of fuel, Bobby Labonte came around and made it into the show because of all the cars too damaged to make it back to the line
I miss when Daytona was a handling track as well, not just who had the fastest car but you needed a long run car
Thank the repave for the lack of this
@@edgedj1012 The Next Gen cars though seem like they are going to be more about Handling at Daytona now.
Give it time, my man. The track surface is 11 years-old.
It will start to get back there. Dega is about 16 years-old, and it’s starting to show some signs of bumpiness again.
A car from 06 made the 500 in 2011. That's crazy
And then 7 years later Kaz Grala drove another old Evernham car in the July Xfinity race.
Always look forward to the qualifiers and just in time for Daytona 500 Pole Qualifying night.
you gotta give us some 80s daytona 500 related content! i’m dying to see those!
God that last one was so stupid. Dillon should’ve been in.
Screw the charter system.
It was basically the same format from 2005-2012(?) with the top 35 rule. In 2005 Robby Gordon missed it after finishing like 7th in his Duel. The spots on qualifying time are decided after the Duel transfers, Ty needed to beat Preece and he just didn't do it
I blame the FOUR RWR charters.
@@seekerblackout at least the top 35 rule still had 8 open cars making the field. And you couldn’t just hoard points.
@@quasimoto7662 Yeah having only 4 spots to be decided is the lame part of it.
My idea from the Indy 500 qualifying video comes to life! And its just as good and better as I imagined it. You do such a good job on historical content and videos!
Imagine if you told a 2010 michael mcdowell in 11 yrs he would win the 500 he wouldve told you that your crazy
14:59 I had the chance to be part of andrettis crew in 96. RIP friend.
17:00: And three months later Mayfield was suspended by NASCAR after a positive drug test and hasn't raced in NASCAR since.
Jeremy Mayfield needs another chance in nascar
As much as I agree... He's 53. I doubt anyone would full time bring back a man his age. I would love to see him run a race or two though
You missed 2002 when Jimmy Spencer and Hut Stricklin missed the 500, & 2006 when Scott Riggs missed it.
Kirk Shelmerdine made it ahead of Riggs that year as well
Another quality upload. Thank you!!
While there were some great moments with the 2005-2012 format, the duels were far more entertaining when 35-36 cars were not locked in, and everyone had to race hard in the duels to ensure they made the race. I was thrilled when they brought the old system back in 2013 and it was a real shame to see it go away only a few years later with the charter system.
I think something you should've put in was Dave Marcis failing to make the 2000 Daytona 500, ending his streak of 32 consecutive Daytona 500 starts
18:28 that's a Daytona 500 WINNER right there
HONORABLE MENTION 2006 DUELS
I miss when these races were relevant with 50-60 entries. Now it’s just a glorified practice session where the field fillers fighting to get in lose the draft. It would be completely irrelevant if nascar didn’t keep lowering the number of starting cars.
The 500 is the only race where more than even 40 cars show up.
And now mcdowell is the defending winner of the 500
Why don't we go back to a 125 mile format? I don't see any need to keep it at 150, especially since there aren't as many cars attempting to qualify anymore
I KNEW THIS WAS COMING AFTER THE BUMP DAY FILM CAME OUT!
18:21: The second time Todd Bodine lost out on the last lap.
Greatest Daytona Speed Week 60 Entries From 1990 To 1993 42 Car Field Buick Regal And Chevrolet Lumina Generation 3 Car NASCAR History In My Opinion Thanks For Uploading
Ty Dillon was completely robbed Preece was already in from qualifying and I thought it was whoever finished ahead of the open cars was in
Rest In Peace John. :(
It would be really sweet again to see that back at Daytona a full speed week instead of California Love Daytona
Now 2022 Kaz grala beating JJ yaley on the last lap to get in the 500.
Ty Dillon missed the 500 racing his heart out in 2021. Meanwhile, Derrike Cope gets in on a past winners provisional and spends the entire race on a Sunday scenic cruise.
What a shame.
No actually Cope crashed on lap 3 so he didn't even get the chance to ride around all day 5 seconds off the pace
Make it like trying to qualify for the Indy 500, anyone can go home.
Charter system (Race Team Alliance) prevents that.
2002 was a good one also.
I really miss Jeremy Mayfield
Mike Wallace made the most 👌
En 2023 Conor Daly llegó a la Daytona 500 gracias a un Big One que atrapó a Austin Hill
Earnhardt to win it 10 YEARS IN A ROW he's won the Gatorade 125s🥳🥳🥳...
18:48
13:54
And all of these guys were irrelevant once they got to sunday.
2021 was such bs
E
2014 where both Labonte neither makes the 500 being more than a half lap down due to a last lap wreck
