Very helpful. Thanks for posting. Purchased a jumbospot that came with ver 3.4.16 - followed your video to upgrade to ver 4.1.2 ... dropped the backed-up config file into boot partition and hotspot booted up fine. - all my previous settings, my info and wifi/ethernet info back in place... thanks again.
This video really helped me finally get my mini hotspot updated. I did have trouble getting it to load my backup on first boot. It kept freezing and saying CLOSE on the screen. So I flashed it again, just made the wifi config file from the pistar website to set it to my own wifi. After it restarted properly I loaded the backup and all is well! Thanks.
After recent upgrades using Version 4, I was not holding the network. The hotspots were totally unreliable. The dashboard kept showing "not linked." This was happening with multiple hotspots (Pi Zero) using a few different networks. In desperation, I went back to version 3 and now everything works reliably again. Just getting the word out if others are having problems.
Thanks for the video, but I have a weird issue. When I backup the pi-star config, it does not download a zip file to my computer, but rather a folder containing several files. So, can't subsequently drag that to the root of the new pi-star 4 boot card. Unless of course, that's what I should do?
Hello, I have watched this video of yours many times over to see if I missed anything. Everytime I use etched it his through the whole flash process and then starts the validation process and never finishes, it always says Flash Failed I don't know why it won't do it, I am using a new SanDisk ultra 32GB card, I have wasted so much time on this, it is driving me crazy. Now I noticed that you never unzip the pi-star upgrade that you down load, you just put it right into etched, its that my problem that I unzip it first? Please help!!!
Anyone got the file name of the config file to move? It was just off the screen, ended up doing it again but it'd be nice to back up the config file to my pc, just don't know the file name
Did follow your video, now the wifi has a name pi-star setup, can't log on to nowhere. What is the ip ? It should have gone back to my original settings, right ?
Great Video i Had to reinstall pie as per your video but you say copy your config file over but I don't seem to have a config file the file you copied looked like a zip file ... what am I missing ?
Careful; If you using a Mac to save the Pi-Star config file it unpacks the zip file into a folder... Just compress them back into a zip file and Bob is your uncle ;) 73 m0wao
You can get the hat (the bit you plug in to the Pi) pretty cheap on ebay or other similar websites. I'd say that's probably your best option. Then you can install the software onto a micro SD card in the same way shown in this video
Just got the hotspot for the first time, it had v3 on so updated it to v4 using your video thanks. I used a fresh 32GB card just in case. The hotspot seems to run very slow, im talking nearly a minute to change config pages. (it was doing that on v3 as well) any ideas? thanks
That's normal, mine does the same. I usually cut it out of videos just so people don't get bored but nevertheless it does take about a minute to save changes
radiosification ok thanks for that! I think most people must edit out the screen refreshes then too! DMR has certainly been a steep learning curve but I think I’m about 98.5% there now!
@@radiosification I am using it 'just to chat'. But my hotspot cost me $200. So I don't want to make it unusable. Don't want to chance not having a perfectly good working hotspot. I am not an experimenter. I commented because looking at the title of your video I thought there was a new fully tested version. I don't do beta anything.
These things are quite slowly updated. I don't think it'll be released as a full version for a while still. It's only done by volunteers. But don't worry, you can't break your hotspot by doing this. If it's not working well then you can just put the old software back on. It's only on an SD card. You could even get a new SD card and then if you wanted to change back then you could just put the old one back in. I've been using it for ages now with this new software and it's working perfectly.
Just found this and updated my Commander Spot just fine. Thanks for taking the time to create the video it was very helpful.
Glad it helped
I just upgraded to Pi-Star 4.1.4, using your excellent video as a guide. I was up and running in about 5 or 6 minutes. Many thanks for posting this!

Fantastic update video, Best by far on RUclips. 👍
Thanks for all. This video was very usefull for me, as I just received my jumbospot on ver 3. :)
So there is no need to un-zip the config file before you drag it into boot sector ?
Thank you for the very informative video. Couldn't have done this without you!
Glad to help
Thank you for this. You made it easy.
Great video. I just wish I could update mine this easily. My pi doesn't like any sd other than the one that came with it for some odd reason.

Yeah that's probably the issue. Did you try it?
a bit impossible when the boot etc are not shown in windows 10 here
Well, its 4 days short of a year from when this video was uploaded and STILL the 4.x.x's are in beta?
Seems to be, yes. When software is made by hobbyists they don't have much incentive to keep working on it once they get bored

You have to actually save the config file from your old installation first otherwise yes you won't have the file
Careful; If you using a Mac to save the Pi-Star config file it unpacks the zip file into a folder... Just compress them back into a zip file and Bob is your uncle ;) 73 m0wao
@@radiosification No you don't. the config file is the one created when you set up wifi
@@allengower669 no it isn't, that's a different config
Very intuitive, thank you so much.
I already have a raspberry pi 3B + and I wonder what is the best hotspot for DMR and where to buy it. Thank you

I had a PI zero W and just got the cheapest one i could find on ebay £25 and it works fine. ebay.us/PLuJae

I used your video to update my hot spot. Nice and easy to follow, however now my hot spot no longer shows up on aprs.fi.
Not sure about installing a beta. Taking too many chances.
Are you using your hotspot for something mission critical, or just to chat?
