I’ve been to the Fair Day in Crossmaglen, must have been in the year of 1965 and it was a sight to behold, for a NY ‘er it was medieval to me, but I loved it all the same.
Just take a look at this video, you will see young kids in pubs drinking beer, Guinness and short whiskeys, smoking pipes and cigarettes, gambling, dealing cards and betting big, discussing world affairs and planning ahead for when they grow up and have to leave school, this was also how I spend my younger days, Life was tough but we coped and did not complain.\ You tell this to young people those days and they will not believe a word, very different times
Lol. the guys riding the horses remind me of the town called san miguel in the spaghetti western ' a fistful of dollars' starring clint eastwood! The square named after the late great Cardinal O Fiach seen in this film rip
Fascinating. Especially at 2.08 when the 'Culdees' are mentioned. The Culdees were heavily centred around a wee village here in Perthshire called Muthill. A lovely estate and old castle now popular for 'Glamping.' Muthill incidentally has a good proportion of Irish descendants. I have played St Patrick's day gigs there, and enjoyed sessions in the Commercial bar! A popular woman in South Armagh and friend of mine, Maggie Fearon was born and raised in Muthill. Many thanks for posting this, a real treasure!

I was stationed there in 1986 for 4 months. Amazing countryside but deadly for British Soldiers. Great history though
