- Big Tom McBride the King of Country music in Ireland is revered in his home town Castleblaney.
Ten years at the top of the Irish showband scene has made Big Tom a legend in his own lifetime.
Big Tom’s careers began in 1960 with a performance in a rusty tin shed in the village of Oram, four miles from Castleblayney, where an audience of around sixty witnessed the birth of a country music star. Caretaker of that rusty shed Paddy McKeogh recalls that very night when a nervous Big Tom and his band took to the stage for the first time.
They played some hillybilly stuff.
Years on, Big Tom now has his own recording studio in Castleblayney where he records his songs for his recording company Denver Records.
The pains of love, the broken marriage vows, the widow’s black, the lonesome whistles, and the inevitable mother’s tears, are now balanced, backtracked, mixed and taped on the latest top class equipment.
Big Tom’s manager Robert Irwin explains the reasons for Big Tom’s unique success.
He’s a people singer. He sings songs that they can understand and that they themselves can sing.
In defence of Big Tom from some critics who believe his music is outdated Robert Irwin says,
He’s the biggest thing in the country and the biggest thing that ever will be in this country.
Songwriter Johnny McCauley also replies to criticism that the songs he writes for Big Tom are overly sentimental by saying that this is what the people want.
Tom McGurk also chats to some locals about what they like and admire about Big Tom, before meeting members of Big Tom’s family, including his mother, at the family home.

Watched Big Tom at the Grafton in Liverpool. He had the place rockin.
Times were tough make no mistake.. but it was a brilliant time for music. And what’s more, music brought us together in a way I fear we may never see again, and that’s the real shame of it.

I was never a country music fan but I thought that comment was sweet and really showed how B/Tom gave people enjoyment and nice memories. I stopped B/Tom at a random check point once at around 4am when I was a Garda in Kerry. Nothing wrong but I was surprised to see him driving himself alone I assume from some gig. It struck me that being on the road like that was a tough and even perhaps a lonely life.
Noel was a part time history lecturer in trinity college Dublin. Very cool guy, very passionate about music. He used to be the figure skating champion too, very talented humble guy.

I would have loved to watch more of that video. An absolute legend in 1970's rural Ireland. He drew massive crowds at carnivals and dances. Hillman Hunters and Avengers, Ford Cortinas and Capris all with Big Tom stickers parked outside, along with Honda 50s and 175s. Good times for many. Rest easy big fella.

The best of memories. Robert Irwin spoke so well in this interview with Tom McGurk. There can never be another Big Tom. He was unique, a one-off, he touched the hearts of countless thousands of people. I miss him every day. We loved Big Tom, Monaghan's greatest ever ambassador. He will always be Ireland's country king in the hearts of all of us who were privileged to call him a friend.
Nice to see Robert again. We were pals back in 1968 when Tom was in his prime.
Big tom and the mainliners best band i ever heard always loved them and still do now more than ever and even my grand children love them too the may head to heven but the will never die there music will live fore ever

I remember a story from back then - whether true or not, I couldn't say - that Big Tom and his band, The Mainliners, once made an appearance in an American city where the entire audience was composed of long-haired hippies, the air blue with marihuana smoke, expecting to hear a hard rock band espousing the use of heavy drugs - a mainliner back then, of course, being a heroin addict who injected - only to be regaled with Four Country Roads, Broken Marriage Vows, et al. Perhaps they perked up a bit when he launched into Smoke Along The Tracks. I hope it's a true story, it still makes me chuckle.
I have to confess that i greatly disliked this type of music in my early days I am a Phil Lynott/ Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, Van Morrison,The Doors, Bob Dylan CCR Etc Man through and though, by sheer bad/good luck I good roped in to seeing Big Tom, Joe Dolan and a few other Irish bands and for several years I would not admit that I liked them more then I wanted to, they were great, Life is strange, how we can change our minds as time goes by and we are no longer afraid to admit the truth, They say that the truth will sets you free, so I am as free as a bird sailing over the highest mountain and the deepest blue sea
Well, you do have an excuse. Being a Thin Lizzy fan does take up a lot of time in regards to listening to music. Hell... practically consumes my whole day sometimes.

The guy (whoever he is) presenting this is dressed in a thoroughly un-style of clothing. It's ridiculous. To think we once thought it looked "cool." I used to dress this way, too. Ridiculous! He is like a clown. It takes away from what he has to say. It shows the virtue of traditional styling.
I have to admit that I have detested Irish country music all my musical life ! Absolute garbage. And guess what ? It's still garbage. Still I don't want to be disrespectful to Tom McBride or his family god be good to him .
Well, to each his(her) own. As a very young person and still not educated in various types of music, I noticed how Big Tom got people up and moving with his music. For some reason, people took to the floor. He was gifted. I didn't particularly care for Opera until I discovered Pavoratti(others). Hope whatever kind of music you like brings you joy. To me music is the world language - breaks down all barriers. Slainte and blessings galore.
