The state of piston engine development at the end of ww2 is amazing. The next generation of engines had awesome horsepower. Many didn't make into production aircraft due to the war ending and jet engines coming on line. The torque was so high in these engines that counter rotating propellers were added so that if a pilot hit the throttle to fast the aircraft wouldn't flip over on it's back. I suspect engine development was outrunning what a propeller could handle.

Is all the smoke customary on these types of engines?

With the radial engines, yes. It's residual oil that seeped down into the lower cylinders.

Yes it is. The radial engines in particular, because oil leaks into the bottom cylinde rs when it isn't running. When it fires up, this oil is burned off. They run much cleaner after warming up a little. Large displacement engines of any type are going to smoke at startup... rich mixtures, priming and loose tolerances that tighten up as the machine warms up.

These are all simply magnificent machines! The technology that really intrigues me are the contra-rotating props. This is simply fascinating!

The guy with the Ag plane is brave.
First rule about engine runs. Make sure there is nothing behind you.
Second rule about engine runs.. make sure there is nothing in front of you.
I had a plane jump the chocks one day and thankfully I got it stopped and the engines shut down before it went into the hangar door.

I think the first airplane was a scratch built renotype racing aircraft

It think it was a sea fury with some parts missing, but I don't know much about racing planes.

@@ibcoull no, gear is way too short. The wasp major it's sporting wasn't mounted in any of the major fighters so clearly a retrofit and it really feels like it's a P47 body or something, the gear looks similar, but the wing doesn't look right. If it's a P47 they did a lot of body work cuz the wings meet the body differently (and obviously different cowl with the retrofitted motor. I am utterly lost
