      My aircraft mechanic was paying alimony, so he would give me a cash discount so he could hide money from his ex. I'm only a few years out of school at this point so still a little naive. One day as we're having a beer at the end of the week, he tells me, "If it flies, floats, or f***s, it's cheaper to rent than buy."

    Zebrano is the name Audi used back then for the fancy wood :). In terms of the ECU, you should see some of the mods/chips people make for the older 10vt cars. Very interesting stuff! What you dont see is the moisture trap which should be just a bit before the hose meets the ECU. Anyone who is an enthusiast but has not worked on these because they are intimidated need to watch these videos. Amazing how simple some stuff is when you break it down. I've said it before, but these things are amazing highway/road trip cars. The only thing this one is "missing" would be the front sport seats. The comfort seats are ok but the sports are extra bolsterous and more comfy. Looks like Ivan has given the green light for more older Audi's to invade his shop! :D

    Ivan: This is(different)". Saying it nicer.
    Also Ivan: It all came apart and was actually fixed fairly easily in the long run.
    Funny how that happens...
    I've ridden and raced dirt bikes all my life. I've had pretty much every brand of Japanese bike and some Euro bikes. Yes, the Euro bikes are put together somewhat differently(but the converse can be said if you went the other direction). I currently run a Vintage National cross country series and have Husqvarna bikes. Funny thing is, parts are readily available for the Huskys and they're pretty easily fixed with general 'stuff'. I have much harder time getting parts for the Suzukis, that we're much more plentiful here in the States back in the day. Fixing them can be more of a problem today.
    Also, those that own the Kawasaki KLR650 love to complain about KTMs having problems, yet they readily talk about their prowess in fixing age old problems the KLR continually had that were never addressed by Kawasaki. Seems kinda funny when you stop and think about it.
    Then the rest of the Japanese crowd complains about the cost of KTMs, then you see them putting thousands of dollars into tuners and suspension work on their 'cheaper' bikes, then 6 months to a year later they're selling them because they can't make it into a KTM.
    It all depends on your perspective when you look at things.
    Ivan was able to fix up a 32 year old vehicle that sat for quite a while. Yes, it took time and some patience working on something he was unfamiliar with and that unfamiliarity caused some frustration, but it was fixed with general mechanical know how. I'm sure it cost the guy a good bit to have Ivan do all that, but considering what new vehicles cost, especially EVs, well... It was a drop in the bucket. Good luck replacing the batteries in an EV 32 years from now(and even presently when your Hyundai Ioniq hits a minor object in the roadway 😉).

    • @reneneron2971
      @reneneron2971 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@PatricioGarcia1973 yes; I have a Megasquirt ECU I built. MAF sensors are very dependent on the size and configuration of the intake; MAP does not care. So, for an aftermarket ECU, MAP makes much more sense.

    • @MartinE63
      @MartinE63 7 месяцев назад

      While MAF was historically common on early fuel injection vehicles (Bosch etc) now it is mainly a US emissions thing. There are lots of vehicles worldwide from a multitude of manufacturers that use MAP instead. Some, for instance Mini (on the R56), use MAF for US emissions compliant vehicles and MAP everywhere else, both equipped with upstream and downstream O2 sensors (one being a wide band sensor) The end result in terms of measured tailpipe emissions is more or less the same.

To replace the heater core required a similar operation. That blower box was glued in and so hard to reach in that space it took much sweat and hours to detach. The only good part of that job was when I went to the dealer to pick up the new core I special ordered the cashier wanted only $80 instead of the HUNDREDS they told me when I ordered it. Being honest I said, "are you sure?" She confirmed the price and I was out the door with a big smile on my face, very relieved as money was tight. You rock, man!

    Let your customer know that if he's going to replace the wheel bearing or struts at some-point he may want to convert those UFO brake rotors at that time from a different year Audi / VW to get away from these parts he will have a hard time finding. I believe, if memory serves me right there are other VW/Audi options that you can convert the struts / wheel bearing / Brake system from as easy as swapping it all over. I'm sure someone online has mentioned this. I remember my dad did it some time ago for a customer (neighbour) in the mid 1990's. But as my late father is no longer with us, I can't ask him.

If not, they are fairly inexpensive. There is no easy way to salvage a rusty tank. But you could help it along until a replacement if found. Once it's drained out, you could use some blue shop towels to wipe it down and use compressed air to completely dry it out. Use a stiff plastic or brass brush to loosen up the rusty bits and vacuum the rust out.

    Thinking about it for a bit now I believe the only way to insure there will no longer be problems with the fuel tank would be to replace it. Probably unobtainium. God luck sir. Looking forward to see what you come up with.

    Blower wheels rotate so the vanes “cut” the air like a salad shredder blade. Even though it looks like the air would be deflected inward toward the center of the wheel, instead it’s flung “forward” and follows the curved blower housing around and out the discharge. It will work a little if you reverse the wheel so the vanes don’t cut the air as it rotates, but output is about 1/3 to 1/2 of normal.

    A washer in the new fan motor, how unlucky is that, but you fished it out :-D
    I expected the wash/wiper motor to be stone dead.
    Hopefully the mileometer and fuel gauge will behave. Perhaps the road vibration will keep them moving.

    Amazing car! Weird car! Not sure what to say. My brother had about a 1982 Audi 5000 here in Canada. At the time, an inline 5 cyl was not common. The average garage would open the hood, look at that 5 cyl, and close it up and say go somewhere else.

    After you get this to 100% it will still be a car I would never want to own or drive. I wonder how much a foreign car shop or dealer would charge for all these repairs. Several thousand for sure.

    Why would anyone want to go through this trouble to fix this junk car? Why would you want to go through all the hassle to do it? There is no way that you can charge the customer for your time. For RUclips videos? You have more patience than anyone I have ever seen. You must enjoy the challenge of problem solving. I own two wonderful Toyota hybrid vehicles that are 6 and 11 years old. They look and run like new but if I have undiagnosed problems, I am coming to your shop! I greatly admire your persistence and patience!

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I’m a retired teacher so I completely understand the value of the learning opportunity. I have owned many vehicles in my life but the three Toyota hybrids have been the most reliable and satisfying vehicles to maintain and drive. And of course, they get wonderful mileage. The multiple engines complement each other to reduce maintenance. I have never done anything but routine maintenance. I have never had to replace the brakes or the hybrid battery. I am very happy with the reliability, economy and performance. There must be a lot of people like me because it’s very difficult to purchase them, new or used. My dealer begs to buy the 2018 RAV4 hybrid limited at least once a week. Not happening!

      @@rogerrocco5211 hard to beat a Toyota in the maintenance and reliability department for sure! However they are on the opposite side of the "fun to drive scale"... as most "appliance" cars are nowadays haha

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics It’s a joy to drive! Unless you own one, it’s impossible to know the potential for power. When I merge onto an expressway, all the motors engage and it takes off like rocket. But most hybrid owners drive conservatively to get better mileage. And there’s another element of pleasure. Non hybrid drivers hate to be around us and pass at every opportunity. We love pissing them off! Actually, I drive with the flow of traffic but it’s enough for them to see Prius to be annoyed. Love it!

I have it on FSO Polonez with 1.4L english engine supplied by Rover company. So I belive that all Rovers from 90s had that feature😊 It just had MAP sensor bulit in it.

    Fuel tank clean proposition. Drain, remove pump for access. partially fill with soapy water and then try to brush inside somehow. Shop vac to remove soapy water, then rinse just water, shop vac. Clean rag then compressed air to dry. Just a suggestion. Obviously a new tank new tank would be best. Thanks for the videos!

  • @bassboat1

    You probably already finished the tank... I work on some old atvs and snow machines that always seem to have water condensed in the tanks. I clean them with a cheap electric fuel pump and a WIF filter - pull off the bottom and dump the output right in the tank.
