You might want to invest in more "laser glasses." It's not how dark the glass are, it's about the frequency of the beam. You need glasses tuned to notch out the laser light to protect your eyes. Do not play with this matter. A 2kW laser will take your eye from a bounced as well as straight on beam. 😎
I had already planned on buying welding screens when I get going on this. I don't need a 'rando' walking into my shop and getting their eyes hurt that's for sure.
Best glasses for such work are probably some VR glasses with a see through mode. It is funny with people spending a couple thousand on these but rely on the 10$ glasses that come with it. 😂
IR light bounces very well on any metallic surface, it's not your eyes alone you want to protect, your body and your colleagues as well! I know someone who lost feeling in the tip of his finger after IR laser "did its work"... Don't underestimate this piece of technology!
I highly reccomend investing in proper eye protection designed for the frequency of your laser, and I'd designate an area for laser use where nobody else will accidentally walk through. Even bounced beams can badly damage an eye when they're this powerful! Welding helmets are not sufficient! Be safe guys, i'm super jealous

I bought a Varibend version of what you have @ 2000watts as both a cleaner and a welder. I do not believe there is much difference between yours and mine except for the gun. It also came with a wire feed which I do not use very often. The water pump is the only thing that has given me an issue due to non-use for five months but an easy fix. The pump is very cheaply made. The welding control of these machines is phenomenal with the ability to weld sheet metal as thin as .005" and as thick as 1/4". As easy as a glue gun. Have a blast!

I work in a powder coating/ motorcycle shop and we bought a 3000 watt laser. We use it to clean our hooks and other parts that comes in the shop. Works good on greasy oily motorcycle frames. The only downside that I have had with it is anything with white powder coating it takes forever to get clean because for some reason the white reflects the laser also doesn't work very well on chrome
Using one of those lasers is an art, you got to practice finding the right power level but once you get good, it works amazing. It didn't seem to heat the metal up too much, 110 is warm but I wouldn't say it's dangerously hot.
Yeah he'd do better if he learned a bit more control, he's rushing it a lot which is why he leaves so many lines so causing more heat having to go back and forth so many times to get all the spots he missed.
You might be able to mitigate the heat buildup if you set up a large shop fan aimed at the work area... That would also help clear the smoke and fumes created by the LASER too...
Thanks for showing on the heavier stuff. On parts for paint stripping or where you shouldn't damage the material underneath a pulsed laser is a better option, a 300-500W system. I'd like to see you clean some concrete outside with yours!
you should look into a dry ice blaster. From what Ive seen they will way out preform the laser with not metal distortion. They use them on air plane parts a lot.
Dry ice has its place, but isn’t as effective with paint removal, rust to an extent. Also requires one hell of a compressor to run and even in a chest dry ice breaks down really fast so you will be constantly purchasing more or have to make your own pellets which will double your startup cost. Also the laser equipment is so often not set up optimally there are a lot of parameters to adjust and very few people who know how to well. Even most selling the equipment have zero idea how to really use it. When its dialed it works very well. I have both CW and Pulse lasers
Def work with a curtain and remind everyone as a guy mentioned below bounced beams, yep need a enclosure maybe even alert everyone when the lazer is in use. Great Vid 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I've seen them working, really good and so much less messier than blasting and grinding, ideal for using on pieces that have lots of angles and areas that are difficult to get into. Would be a great addition to any workshop. 👍
It makes sense that your chief painter would be the person who gets the most time on the machine. Just make sure that he doesn't get paranoid about job security and hoard the password.

That's quite the tool. I've been following a guy up here in Canada. He's in Manitoba. He bought one a while back and he uses it on restoring old cars and it works pretty good but they're not cheap. That's the one thing. I seen the price on that one and that's American so I can imagine what it is Canadian but no, that'll be interesting. Looking forward to it. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
Would you make the laser more efficient by having a fan blow the 'smoke' away from the job surface? I can see a lot of the beam's energy being lost as it reflects off the smoke, shown as sparks in the beam and if you blow the smoke away you will get more of the light energy to the surface being cleaned. I know it blows air out of the end of the lance, but that is bouncing back into your pathway, so if you blow it from 90 degrees it may help.
Very handy tool.👌 You will want to have batter boards to contain your work area. Review your videos and you will see the laser passing through the holes as well as working around open corners, especially with people walking around the shop. I don't know what the range of affect is, but probably a bit of information to know to keep everyone safe. Definitely a time saver for quite a few different types of materials. As Kevin so aptly diplayed, a fantastic fire starter also!😂🤣🤙

It needs a 40 or 50 Amp circuit, so it's like using a welder. If you used it for small spots it would not use much electricity. Run it for a full day on a large job and it would be spinning your meter pretty fast
Clint, some crazy ideas: mount the laser-gun in the tool-post on a lathe to clean; and if you have a plasma table, maybe an adapter allows to mount the laser-gun and a program can clean flat steel. Cool tool to see used! Thanks for the videos. Have a great day.

I messaged you guys when you posted the short a while back, but I also have a 2,000 watt 4-in-1 machine, It's a double wobble, so it can create a grid pattern for cleaning which helps reduce the heat on sheet metal, along with some interesting patterns when welding. I think the one you guys have is only single wobble, but I could be wrong. Playing around with the duty cycle, scan rate, scan width, laser frequency, and power level can have drastic effects on how it cleans and how much heat it puts into the base material. I laughed when you guys said trying to turn it on was a chore, and I had the same issues. I was like WTF?!? Matter of fact mine wouldn't accept 245 volts single phase, and I had to put a buck/boost transformer on mine to step the power down to 221 volts, so voltage safety interlock would let the power pass through to the contactor. Different control system and vendor, but mine is same with passwords, and such. Every video I watch I wish I was right along side you guys working. Good people, good business, good quality of work, and good entertainment. Quite the combo. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see you lasering Kevin's RC car. :)
CLINT and a big thanks to Kevin for the demo. As you said Clint it excels at those hard to get to spots and especially for removing paint before welding. Sand blasting with grit or almond shells only does so much and cannot clean those areas where you encounter bounce back. Paint strippers also can only do so much as Im sure you both know, plus there messy and like blasting leave the surface susceptible to immediate corrosion damage. I think you will keep this machine as you go along you will see more benefits of it. I have been researching laser welders and cleaners for some time and this one is very good and the price seems good too. Must check what it sells for here in AUSTRALIA.
I have had my laser for almost a year now, I use it all the time. The manuals are definitely lacking with all sorts of things lost in translation. The laser isn't good for everything but it definitely serves a purpose.
Might make sense to do your normal for large areas that are not obstructed and then final finish anything that those methods have issues with to detail out the final bits. Bolts, corners, welds, etc.
That was fun to watch. Not as much fun as watching Kevin at Christmas but, fun nonetheles 😂 If Kevin had an Australian or British accent, you’d see him on TV at 2am doing the infomercial for this laser.😎
Watching you all work on machines using sledge hammers, giant wrenches, oxy-acetylene torches and crowbars is always entertaining. And now the [air quotesl laser. Technology sure has come a long way.
Once you get past the learning curve and figure out settings to tweak for each material, I could see this being useful. It doesn't really seem to work any better than a good sandblaster but it's so much less messy. I'm wondering how frequently you guys will use it.
It would be interesting to see it used on rusty threads and nuts such as exhaust and manifold fasteners before attempting to remove them. I would like to know if that made the task any easier.
ive been watching half ass kustoms he got the 1500 size with the welder an smaller lens get junk in the lens an it will POOF but it really does some great work on detailed surfaces and it cuts time in refinishing its weak on scaly rust it cleans the rust scale the welder part is excellent on sheetlmetal it doesnt heat soak the panel he welded up an entire roof for his current project using it.
curious to see if you had a heavily corroded bolt/nut like a exhaust manifold on the engine and went over it with the laser would it clean and heat it enough to help in releasing? Also how good would it be to clean surfaces with old gaskets stuck on?
Dad had a powdercoat shop, when parts didn't go well the only real remedy was to put them back in the oven at +800dF and burn it off. Sandbast was no use because its pretty thick and it gives (absorbs the sandblast). Looks like the laser could be the answer, but I can still remember the nasty fumes from burnt powdercoat.
Vapor blast is effective. Lot of expense to bring an oven up to those temps. Hopefully it is a small oven. Many municipalities require extensive exhaust scrubbers... so vapor blasting is where it is at.

I painted a couple of pick up trucks with etching primer. Beds. It realy works. Paint sticks and will not come off. Etches the metal. Bare metal.... be careful where you leave paint overdotst . Rags etc. We had it burn spontaneously in a barrel n the building. Smoked up the place. Thought it was a cogsrettr butt. Nope it happened again. Sdo we started emptying in dumpster. Out side. Then dumpster caught fire in middle of the nite. We gsve up and went to powder coat. No more fires.
It would be interesting to see how well the laser would clean up rough, scaly surfaces if you went over it with a needle scaler first. The needle scaler would get the heavy crusty stuff and the laser would get the rest. Also, I would think on painted cast surfaces the little nicks the needle scaler would leave would let the laser burn through to bare metal better. Neat tool!
Most laser cleaners have the option to choose different laser patterns circles figure eights or back and forth and they all clean a little differently you need to check to see if yours can do that
That is one heck of a cigar lighter! Just kidding! A small part of me says that would be one heck of an anti burglar tool. Break in and get de-rusted! I am sure NOT a recommended use! Corrosion and oxidation doesn't stand a chance now at C&C! I love the sound of it working! It just sounds mean! Have fun using it!
Definitely a game changer in the application it's designed for. This is the best video I've seen of in in action with excellent explanations of how to use it and how it works. Randy should be happy as it's going to save him lots of time getting things ready for Kevin to paint. Thanks Clint and Sausage Fingers Kevin I've no doubt the manufacturer is going to be seeing a spike in sales of that model. They should give it to C & C equipment. I could have used one when I was stripping metal coin doors and other metal parts on Arcade and pinball games to orep them to be painted again.
Recently I saw a demo with a dry-ice cleaning machine. It degreases without any damage, you can even clean dirty cirquit boards and electrical cabinets with this technique. Might be interesting to look at.
It’s new technology and probably in 5 years they will refine the process so it will have a broader range of application, faster, broader sweep, so it has limited uses at the moment, one thing I would say is that I think I would be completely covering myself with clothing and PPE when using it because who knows what impact it will have on the human body in years to come. Thanks for testing it out, I had a Quick Look on sites here in Australia and way out of price range of most smaller workshops

Just a heads up the safety glasses they sent aren’t necessarily for the flash but for the wavelength of the laser. A welding helmet protects against a totally different wavelength. So be careful.
I can definitely see that being something that you could use in your line of work. It’s for sure something that you have to treat with the upmost caution or it could bite ya. But I liked it.👍👍👍

It looks like a welding fume extractor might come in handy in your shop
A welding mask with an air pump and purifier. 3M makes a great one. Maybe they have a laser glass for it.

We've used some that are WAY higher power, mounted to a robot, that will remove anti-skid coating from an aircraft carrier deck.

Impressive little machine. I know when it was used on the blade before welding it appeared pretty damn nice. Certainly getting into tight areas.

More efficient and safer because you don't want to be breathing in all that vaporized paint and other material.

I laughed when you guys said trying to turn it on was a chore, and I had the same issues. I was like WTF?!? Matter of fact mine wouldn't accept 245 volts single phase, and I had to put a buck/boost transformer on mine to step the power down to 221 volts, so voltage safety interlock would let the power pass through to the contactor. Different control system and vendor, but mine is same with passwords, and such. Every video I watch I wish I was right along side you guys working. Good people, good business, good quality of work, and good entertainment. Quite the combo. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see you lasering Kevin's RC car. :)
CLINT and a big thanks to Kevin for the demo. As you said Clint it excels at those hard to get to spots and especially for removing paint before welding. Sand blasting with grit or almond shells only does so much and cannot clean those areas where you encounter bounce back. Paint strippers also can only do so much as Im sure you both know, plus there messy and like blasting leave the surface susceptible to immediate corrosion damage.
I think you will keep this machine as you go along you will see more benefits of it.
I have been researching laser welders and cleaners for some time and this one is very good and the price seems good too.
Must check what it sells for here in AUSTRALIA.
I have had my laser for almost a year now, I use it all the time. The manuals are definitely lacking with all sorts of things lost in translation.
The laser isn't good for everything but it definitely serves a purpose.

Kevin is having way too much fun. He's gonna want to use it for all the hard to reach places before he paints now.
Might make sense to do your normal for large areas that are not obstructed and then final finish anything that those methods have issues with to detail out the final bits. Bolts, corners, welds, etc.
that is a very useful tool and i can see in your shop you can use this all the time.

Watching you all work on machines using sledge hammers, giant wrenches, oxy-acetylene torches and crowbars is always entertaining. And now the [air quotesl laser. Technology sure has come a long way.
Once you get past the learning curve and figure out settings to tweak for each material, I could see this being useful. It doesn't really seem to work any better than a good sandblaster but it's so much less messy. I'm wondering how frequently you guys will use it.
It would be interesting to see it used on rusty threads and nuts such as exhaust and manifold fasteners before attempting to remove them. I would like to know if that made the task any easier.
That is truly amazing. Scares me the type of weapons that could be made with that technology
ive been watching half ass kustoms he got the 1500 size with the welder an smaller lens get junk in the lens an it will POOF but it really does some great work on detailed surfaces and it cuts time in refinishing its weak on scaly rust it cleans the rust scale the welder part is excellent on sheetlmetal it doesnt heat soak the panel he welded up an entire roof for his current project using it.
curious to see if you had a heavily corroded bolt/nut like a exhaust manifold on the engine and went over it with the laser would it clean and heat it enough to help in releasing? Also how good would it be to clean surfaces with old gaskets stuck on?

Dad had a powdercoat shop, when parts didn't go well the only real remedy was to put them back in the oven at +800dF and burn it off. Sandbast was no use because its pretty thick and it gives (absorbs the sandblast). Looks like the laser could be the answer, but I can still remember the nasty fumes from burnt powdercoat.
Vapor blast is effective. Lot of expense to bring an oven up to those temps. Hopefully it is a small oven. Many municipalities require extensive exhaust scrubbers... so vapor blasting is where it is at.

New Toys for big boys. Every once in a while something good comes along. Kevin's got alot of use for this new toy.

I second the testing on cleaning up a Gasket Surface.
I painted a couple of pick up trucks with etching primer. Beds. It realy works. Paint sticks and will not come off.
Etches the metal. Bare metal.... be careful where you leave paint overdotst . Rags etc. We had it burn spontaneously in a barrel n the building. Smoked up the place. Thought it was a cogsrettr butt. Nope it happened again. Sdo we started emptying in dumpster. Out side. Then dumpster caught fire in middle of the nite. We gsve up and went to powder coat. No more fires.

It would be interesting to see how well the laser would clean up rough, scaly surfaces if you went over it with a needle scaler first. The needle scaler would get the heavy crusty stuff and the laser would get the rest. Also, I would think on painted cast surfaces the little nicks the needle scaler would leave would let the laser burn through to bare metal better. Neat tool!

Most laser cleaners have the option to choose different laser patterns circles figure eights or back and forth and they all clean a little differently you need to check to see if yours can do that

I could have used one when I was stripping metal coin doors and other metal parts on Arcade and pinball games to orep them to be painted again.
It's pretty slow going, and expensive. That machine is chewing up some electrons. Certainly has its applications though.
Recently I saw a demo with a dry-ice cleaning machine. It degreases without any damage, you can even clean dirty cirquit boards and electrical cabinets with this technique.
Might be interesting to look at.
It’s new technology and probably in 5 years they will refine the process so it will have a broader range of application, faster, broader sweep, so it has limited uses at the moment, one thing I would say is that I think I would be completely covering myself with clothing and PPE when using it because who knows what impact it will have on the human body in years to come. Thanks for testing it out, I had a Quick Look on sites here in Australia and way out of price range of most smaller workshops

Just a heads up the safety glasses they sent aren’t necessarily for the flash but for the wavelength of the laser. A welding helmet protects against a totally different wavelength. So be careful.

I can definitely see that being something that you could use in your line of work. It’s for sure something that you have to treat with the upmost caution or it could bite ya. But I liked it.👍👍👍
