Some of these chests coast 450 gem it depends on from where you get it and it gives ice egg nest butterfly egg nest duck egg nest and more from those nests that you can not use coins to buy it You can find full informations about it in fandom wikia when you Google it
Is the game even fun at this point? I was feeling pretty good about my progress until I came here. How do you get that much gems without paying for them? I can't see the point in opening anything that costs that much gems if I have to pay for them with real money.

Yes and i think some of it you can get from the wonders like the butterfly one but some others like the ice eggs can only be found in the chests
The normal chest vaults are really not worthy. Only the Wise Dragons, Midas Dragons, Pegasus, Life Dragons, Butterfly Dragons and Moon Dragons

you can farm the gems
you can do Zomblin Falls for 1 chalice and hope to get dragon stars... merge 5 stars and then harvest and merge the gems
