Peter was the first musician to raise awareness of the Aparthied state in South Africa. He wrote the song Biko in 1980, no-one in the west was even aware of the atrocities being carried out against South Africans back then. Steven Biko galvanized the people to stand up against an occupying regime and it was thanks to his steadfast courage that a massive groundswell of resistance took hold and the world finally noticed and the governing regime was deposed. Stephen Biko was arrested and beaten to death by Police before he was even incarcerated. Official cause of death: 'he had fallen out of a window'
Peter Gabriel's political activism inspired many other artists to use concert venues as a means of raising awareness and support regarding Human Rights Abuses and freeing those who have been tortured and imprisoned for daring to speak out against violent atrocities..

The poetic genius of Biko is incredible. Peter put an entire story and movement into 12 lines of verse. The fact the the drums never move from the initial pattern is brilliant. Still brings me to tears. Thank you, Lee.

The Sledgehammer video is ALL stop motion.... every frame separately shot. And he even had to keep his mouth in the right place for the words... Can you imagine what this was like when it came out..!! And the suit at the end was a litteral light suit of tiny light bulbs.....
The world music come from PETER.... He was one of the promoters of WOMAD... the wolrd music and dance festive in the UK... In fact... Genesis got back together with him to get him money because he poured so much into it.....!!
Peter was the first artist with a name to highlight the injustices of apartheid. And Biko was something else when bought that album. Peter always teaches me something. He is the best kind of human being.
And I was lucky enough to get to see that basic band on the anniversary SO tour.... It was awesome.

Peter had been involved and was attracted to the percussive uniqueness of African music as can be heard in the album Security. I don't think he's ever come back.
Martin Scorsese got Peter to do the soundtrack for Last Temptation of Christ. He used only instruments available in North Africa and the MIddle East at the time that Christ was walking the Earth, and created a symphonic masterpiece. There's an album called Passion which combines the soundtrack of that movie with other compilations he gathered at the time that might be worth a listen.

Come talk To Me still gives me chills. It was so intensely dramatic in concert in the video The Secret Worlds Live, it was mind blowing when I saw it live on that tour. Saw him on the last tour, also fantastic. Peter's solo work is very different from Genesis, but no less progressive. The sledgehammer video is definitely stop motion. Pepper's in five years) or Joni (from The Circle Game to The Jungle Line in five years) did grow reaaaalllly quick. Peter G. presented Joni with an award back in the early 90's right after they collaborated on My Secret Place, and talked about her influence, notably her foray into african and brazilian percussions in the mid-70's.

There is also a movie about Biko with Denzel Washington and Kevin Kline. At first sight I thought it was a good idea to make a movie like that about Biko's actions and death. But when I saw it a second time I was disappointed because I then found out that half of the movie is not about that topic but turns into a heroic epic about a white journalist bringing his book about Biko out of South Africa.
"Come talk to me" is about communication difficulties between him and one of his daughters.

It’s called Stop Motion Animation and it’s one of the OLDEST methods- at least 5 decades before 1986 - if you knew, why did you have to look it up?
No one had done this on MTV before:
I assume you know creative people are always looking for new and/or different ways to do things - NO drugs required.

You're dead on when you say this video looks like pictures strung together since a lot of it is stop motion animation. I can't imagine how much time it took to film!

@L33Reacts Great reaction as usual, Lee.
Peter Gabriel has always been my favourite artist of all time. Interesting fact if you haven't been told already is Come Talk to Me, he wrote about his daughter, Melanie. He felt they were growing apart.
Interesting though is many years later Melanie started touring with her dad and they sing that song together and you can see it in Peter Gabriel's Growing up tour, I think. You should give it a watch.
Keep up the great work 👍

@L33Reacts just to make you jealous lol, I saw Peter's Secret World live tour here in Australia back in 94. And on a side note I saw Steve Hackett a couple of years back. He was doing Genesis Revisted tour and he did the entire Selling England by the Pound album plus all of Three Sides Live.

Props to Paula for not breaking out in laughter when he's hanging off the line practically in her face. Brilliant staging.
The Slegehammer video is brilliant, but it's almost a shame to react to because it would be great to hear more reaction to the music.
Biko is, of course, one of the few songs that seriously made a difference in making the world a better place. You picked a great version to react to. He always end his show with Biko, and the line - the rest is up to you - then leaving the stage - Peter first, then the band, drummer last - leaving the audience to continue the song.

'Good singer' is a very subjective opinion! Curious who you DO find is a good singer? What is your criteria? Tone, pitch, clarity?
To many, PG is an excellent singer. Rougher tone, but his pitch is excellent. I liken him to Bryan Adams - more of a gravelly tone, but still quality pitch & dynamics.

He doesn't have the greatest voice, but he is a great artist and his song writing makes up for not having a perfect voice. Compared to, for example, Greg Lake, I love Lake's voice but would prefer to listen to Peter's songs.
