  • Improvisation king at his finest. Jazz star Miles Davis could not understand how Keith played something from nothing., live on-the-spot composing! Very rare ability which in my opinion was strongest in his youth as can be seen in this video.

Jarrett's rhythmic sense is beyond this world. I can't even comprehend it. So much love in his music. Thanks for sharing.

Io c'ero!

What Keith plays is not "something", it's the pinnacle of musical thinking and if Miles hadn't been jealous, he'd have commented honestly: "He can make everything from nothing".

Beautifully stated RussB--in addition, I think being in that "space" sometimes involves being young too...Keith the genius is sitting there for the first time in the first great era of his life (in the wild and crazy late 1960s and '70s) with complete freedom to play anything...and millions of people are loving it! Poor Wynton Marsalis arrived in the mid-1980s with his young fogey attitude and Kenny G won the day! Maybe Wynton just needed to be young...dude was born 25 years too late!

It's so cool that you posted this...I've had trouble convincing even seasoned jazz fans and players to listen to this exact era (the Bremen/Lausaunne and "Facing You" years)....they've never heard of it...the standards trio has occupied many people's attention.

Actually the Bremen Lausaunne piece that I spoke of was originally created during a live improvisation around 1972 in Europe that Keith refined and did as an encore in the triple album set. He later did the same piece a few years later but it was not as practiced and technically refined, as the Bremen Lausaunne version. Practice makes perfect! lol

Ok, thanks for the correction, it was at Piazza Maggiore. As I have mentioned on youtube before I was at the 1974 Commodore Ballroom concert in Vancouver, that was described by veteran jazz critic from the Vancouver Sun newspaper as being mind-blowing, which is how I felt, again it was like a spiritual experience, almost like Keith was tuned into a greater consciousness than himself.
For those who don't know Italian as I don't... use google translate for diedoc56's comment

It's not a piece but different cuts of the 47-minute concert "Piazza Fontana Maggiore, Perugia, Italy - 1974.07.29" (which you can listen to in full on the hardtofindthismusic channel unfortunately much poorer quality).

yes, the moment only happens once and can't be duplicated. Recordings allow for a re-experience only.
My definition of Art requires this uniqueness of effort, without cloning, and oftentimes without success at all - or merely create as well as once before.
A good tenet, I think, is that no one or no thing should be compared to any different other or any different time. Foolish to make the effort. But artists often look for shortcuts. Mustn't try to cheat the Muse.

@JamieTurner7777 you watched the art of improvisation :P
beauty is beautiful coz it's beautiful you know, nothing in beauty has got anything to do with art, the way to attempt something doesn't matter at all. and anything can be beautiful actually and that's the danger.
but I'm also essentially an improviser, pathetic but still, it's the unique way I found to create simple beauties and I absolutely understand Keith Jarrett and consequently what you're saying.

Glad you like it. Other than the Bremen Lausanne Concerts this one comes the closest to the 1974 concert I attended in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom where long time jazz critic Bob Smith of the Vancouver Sun wrote the Keith Jarrett's concert then was "Mindblowing" , this is how I felt, it was like a religious experience, Keith moved the room into another dimension that night.
