  • This is part 4 of Julie's home where my daughter Kaylee and I are working on the basement, sorting out boxes and bags into categories like Corelle, silverware, clothes, linens, kitchen items, pillows, bags, but especially SHOES. You won't believe how many shoes we found and how many were missing their mate.

      The part of the video that I'm missing right before that was me calling for my mom who is upstairs to come help me dig out of the mess and she wasn't responding, but after I swam over the pillows and went upstairs, I found that she was stuck behind her own wall of things. That's the part I wish I could have included in the video that I'm now missing in that corrupted file. Oh well. At least I had a portion of it still.🤷‍♀️😊

    I have a friend that has a "pillow room" in his home. Seriously!
    He probably has that many pillows in there. It is so cool, and comfy, to go there and listen to all kinds of music in candlelight. It is an immediate stress reliever.
    I'm quite sure he made it for his lady guests, like me, to cuddle up. I just got a kick out of it, and we talked for hours. We still do.
    I think there should be a program that donates large lots of pillows like that to make their own pillow rooms. I laugh younger in cheek, but honestly it would be excellent for mental health.
    Some therapist could likely benefit from such!
    I've been binging your shows and really like the organization. But. I mostly like how you talk about the hoarding being often from trauma. My home is in the worse shape ever. Listening to you, it is making sense, bc I have had a 6 surgeries in 3 years. The pain in between was terrible, as was the recovery. It has been truly traumatic. And, it is showing in my home and storage building. Just saying ... thank you for sharing your thoughts and knowledge!
    May God's blessings be upon you as continue this "ministry😊" with a true "servants heart❤" for those in need!

      @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp  5 месяцев назад +2

      Oh my goodness! A new business idea. Instead of all of the event centers that are popping up everywhere (at least here in Utah), we could have Pillow Palaces where there are just different rooms of different colored pillows and different textures of pillows where people come to spend an hour in a room with beautiful pillows. There would need to be a good way to sanitize them after each session, but I'm loving the thought of this... haha! Also, yes, I can imagine that you would be a little traumatized after that many surgeries in a row and not being able to do things the way you used to. I'm so sorry you are dealing with that!

    You are doing an excellent job. I know many people may think sorting it all but not getting rid of anything is useless, but this is huge first step in the process for the home owner. She’s letting you into her home, touching her stuff, and she’ll see the multiples of everything she has. And it’s getting everything up off the floor, consolidated, organized, making a path for fire and safety. If she were open to seeing a therapist, maybe she would eventually let you take the next step…letting go of some of the stuff. You have a heart of gold ❤🇨🇦

    • @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp
      @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp  6 месяцев назад +6

      I agree it does help to have everything in one place. I think the biggest struggle here is that she has limited time to get through all of this so that she isn't evicted (I think end of May is the deadline) and I don't think she is making progress quick enough. She kept canceling or wanting to reschedule things, so it was a struggle to get things organized enough for her to really go through and make the best decisions. I'll actually talk more about some of the sad realities of this situation on my next video. Hoarding disorder is a seriously rough thing for both the hoarder and their family. It's been eye-opening to witness it firsthand. She is getting therapy, but I'm afraid it's not the kind she really needs...more like talk therapy rather than CBT which I understand is the best treatment for hoarding disorder. So, we will see what happens. I have other jobs I'm working on, but my mom is still keeping tabs on the situation and hopefully she will be ready for me to come back in May to help with one last push to keep her from being evicted.

      @@ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wpYes, people with hoarding disorders don’t seem to do well with absolute deadlines and pressure. It took years for them to get like this and it takes years to acknowledge they have a problem and learn how to overcome it. I have a couple family members that suffer from this. For them it is because of trauma and loss. I didn’t mean to come across as judging or be critical. I only mean to say thank you for trying to help. It’s unfortunate this case has a hard deadline and eviction.

    Awwww, i totally get your banter together. My son is 'on the spectrum' with A.D.H.D & autism. He is probably the funniest person i know & has me in stitches all the time. Sometimes people dont get our relationship & may view him as being disrespectful. But he is anything but!
    Hes extremely loving and kind, even though he will be 30 soon, and has moved away with his girlfriend, he still calls me every day to chat & check on me. He visits often & i visit him & his lovely girlfriend.

I don't remember the show at all even though apparently it was in 1987. It must not have been on TV very long because I have no memory of it. It was just funny that I actually found a picture to go along with the dumb thought in my head.😅

    My mom is a shoe hoarder. In fact it is clothing in general. When we moved my parents out of a rental house and into another one closer to us, my niece and I found a pile of shoes almost 4ft tall. Most of them weren't in this good of shape. A lot were moldy and falling apart. When we tried to get rid of the moldy shoes she had a HUGE hissy fit, insisting they could be cleaned and worn. We had he sit down and try on about 6 pair that disintegrated before they got on her feet. My dad ended up having to take her out of the house while we got rid of them. 19 bags of nasty shoes.

      That is heartbreaking. 😞It's really sad when hoarding gets to the point where even garbage becomes valuable to a person. I was thankful that at least almost everything in this house was in pretty good condition.

      I can relate to this. Have been helping a friend who I think has difficulty with compulsive shopping and hoarding. Her apartment was very mouldy and a lot of her hoarded clothing and shoes that had never been worn were mouldy and in piles mixed with trash.
      It made the cleanup so much easier when we tried to make an agreement that if it was really mouldy we would throw it away, so we really only tried to clean and save the ones that she got upset over. Many of the mouldy items she was able to see as trash eventually - although we built up to that and skipped a lot of stuff to start with
      I didn't try to fight her on it - I just said we could try to clean things, skipped it, or even just put them away dirty and moved on. There was so much that it was about pushing on with easy decisions and coming back to anything hard another time when it might seem less hard.
      We made huge progress following Dana K White's steps about trash, easy stuff that has a home already, and donating. And I talked about the container concept a lot.... straightforward stuff like all the clothing needed to fit into the cupboards and drawers and couldn't be in extra bags on the floor (I blamed the mould, which helped). And we actually got there in the end ❤ but I think that gentle, factual/non emotional process, and skipping hard things really helped her make big changes without too many tears.
      Hopefully you found a way as well over time.. its so hard though especially when the hoarding gets so bad.
      Helping people with hoarding disorder is so hard and doesn't always seem logical I think, but can definitely feel a huge sense of victory when you start to see some floor and wall!!🎉

      Thank you for sharing that experience. I love Dana K. White's method of tackling easy stuff first to just get those decision-making muscles primed. 💪 Sadly, I'm not sure that she is making decisions quickly enough to make the deadline so that she doesn't get evicted. Every time I would think we were making some good progress, it seemed we took two steps back and had to start over again. I will talk about this in my next video, but I will basically wrap up my experience at this house because I think I've pretty much done all I can do and have turned things back over to the family. It breaks my heart, but I can't force her to get rid of things and it's sad that she can't see that she's going to lose it ALL unless she gets rid of SOME now. 😞

      That's actually really good motivation for getting rid of stuff if you live in a wildfire- prone area. It helped me get rid of a lot after we had a close call. You look at all the extra stuff as fuel for fire.

    • @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp
      @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp  6 месяцев назад

      That's kind of how this all started was her neighbor being concerned about a fire since this is a duplex, and she should absolutely be concerned because, you're right, that is a lot of flammable material. And especially where the outlets seem to have an issue with things staying plugged in, if the plug is halfway hanging out, that is a huge fire risk! It is pretty scary.

      @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp thank you for the extra insight Bonnie. It is a troubling situation. I think it must be extremely difficult to get the hoarder to see things differently...shift their long held perspective...even in the face of all the fire fuel and bad wiring. If they have been made clearly aware and continue to hang on to mega boxes of stuff, I don't know if I could go back. This is a very hard place to be, for you. My heart goes out to you. Thank you for your comments. I really hope she does get the help she needs to part with most of this stuff. The funny thing is, she used to help a lot of people in the same way that I do now and so I know there is that very compassionate side of her where she wants to help others. I'm not sure she is seeing the connection between giving some of this stuff away without selling it and blessing someone else's life because of her willingness to give up that item. It's such a hard mental illness to understand and to treat.

    I very much enjoyed your bantering with your daughter. 😂 Its my kind of humor, too. 😊
    I don't comment often, because I mostly watch on my TV, but I kind of relate to how challenging it is to "get rid" of stuff. I don't really have an issue with hoarding exactly, except I used to have well over a thousand books and I've slowly dwindled it down to less than 200. I also used to have about 6 of those 18 gallon sterelite totes full of school supplies, for some reason. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Lol. I did end up donating it to a local church for their school program, but I don't have any children and its been a couple of decades since I was in college, but for some reason I had a thing for school supplies. 🤦🏻‍♀️😆
    Anyway, after my mom passed away, it took me about 7 years to finally finish sorting through and letting go of most of her stuff. She didn't have nearly the hoard this lady does, but it was a lot. Very overwhelming for me, so I just think you're amazing for helping people with this and I hope you give yourself lots of grace in those moments when it starts to feel like a lot for you. 🙏🏻💐
    Take care and thank you for sharing your family with us. Many blessings! 🙏🏻💜

      Thank you for sharing your experience. I think there are very few people who don't struggle with getting rid of at least a couple of different types of things, whether that's paperwork, pillows, clothes, boxes, or school supplies. And it doesn't always make sense why we have attachment to certain things. So, you are definitely not alone in the struggle. Good boxes really are hard for me to get rid of even though I know I have plenty of them and should just use the ones I have before I start collecting anymore. The Human Experience can be really baffling sometimes. I just love that we all have our struggles. Even if it's not with the same thing, just knowing that everyone does struggle with something is unifying and makes you feel connected to other people. Good for you for being able to get rid of some of that stuff you were hanging on to for so long. It's not easy, but it does feel good once you have managed to do it.👏❤️

      Yeah, it has been a long road for the poor family. I will talk more about this in my next video, but, sadly, I had to call it quits last week after she canceled on me again. It was supposed to be my last day there before we took a break until May while I worked on other houses and I couldn't get the final footage that I wanted. She wanted to see if I could come a different day, but I only have certain days that I can work on it and can't be adjusting my schedule all the time. I have talked to the family so that they know I'm turning things back over to them and I'm also turning the Pod over to her brother who will be in charge of it. This reminds me a lot of an analogy that I often use. Let's say your pickup truck can carry 2500 lb. You can carry 1000 lb pretty easy most of the time. 2000 lb? Sure. 3000 lb? Mmmmaybe. 5000, 10,000. Ok, now that truck will not move. If you try to move, you're likely to just break down completely. When someone is overloaded, like that room, it's just too much. Luckily, Bonnie, the Big Rig, is here to save the day!
    Also, kudos for your daughter wanting to use that draft dodger as a weapon. I've always thought it would be so satisfying to swing that thing around and hit, no, not a person 😏. She'll do well in a second-rate prison movie. Of course, she'll have to change her name to Gerta or or Bertha.

    Hi. I just started watching your channel and truly enjoy all so far. But if I may, your teenage daughter?, she's a teen, right? Even kidding, she should use other words when kidding w you. Nowadays its too weird what social media teaches young adults and parents need to be more parents than friends. Just a thought, but you can always tell me to mind my own business. Either way, I love how you help people and go the extra mile. ❤

      Hahaha...yeah, I get it. I knew some people wouldn't understand our relationship, but I actually love our interactions. We are both on the spectrum, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I love hanging out with her (she's 21 BTW, but could still pass as 16). She's quirky and weird and understands me better than almost anyone. So, yes, I'm sure it looks disrespectful at times, but I love every minute I spend with her. 😊❤️

      I've done that with my own plugs in my home. I tried that here and it still would fall out. I don't know what is wrong with some of the outlets in her house. I was happy when I found a couple of outlets that actually allowed me to plug in my phone to charge without it falling right out.😄

    Wow there is enough shoes for a large homeless shelter and pillows for 20 houses. There has to be a purge

    Any electricians feel free to correct me, but I seem to remember hearing that plugs should not be really loose in outlets. They might want to get that checked. I think plugs are supposed to fit tightly (so they don't hang out halfway causing a fire hazard).

      Thank you for bringing that up because I was quite concerned about it myself as it is a fire hazard to have plugs hanging halfway out of the outlet and, with a hoarded home, you definitely don't want any increase risk of fire.😬

      I would love that! She cracks me up. Even though I sound like I'm being stern with her, this is just the way we banter back and forth. I just love her to death!

      That's how I have always looked at our relationship. As much as I want to be the mother figure, we just have this odd way of interacting. I have said several times while joking around with her, "what is wrong with us?" It's definitely a very different mother/daughter relationship, but it works for us. I just love her to pieces and find her hilarious!😁❤️

      I try to get her there as often as I can. She's pretty busy, though. I always enjoy my time with her even with her violence. We just share that dark humor.😄

    I know I already commented, but just moving things around doesn't make any sense to me. Why not have the owner down there to sort in piles to donate or discard. I'm sorry to say this, but I feel doing things this way appears to be enabling the hoarder. This is not said to be mean. I'm an almost 76 year old lady who so enjoys your videos.

      You are spot on, actually. In my final video of this house, I will be talking a lot more about how things have ended up and if doing things the way that the owner wanted actually improved anything. This has been quite a learning experience and I am not sure if I can do another hoarder house unless I know they are actually ready to get rid of a lot of stuff.

      Absolutely! I do piles for: “Trash” “Keep” “Donate” “Sell” “Recycle”

      Toss the junk mail daily. Break down and Recycle boxes daily or as soon as they arrive. You might try a freedom filer to help you tame the paper.❤❤ regularly toss expired stuff. Best wishes. ❤❤🎉 you can do this!!

      I'm a hoarder at the beginning of my clean-up/deal with hoarding journey. Admittedly I have a small a fraction of a hoard that Julie has. But what I'm struggling with right now is the sorting. I really have to struggle past perfectionism & executive decision making to just set up containers to sort into. So this help could really assist Julie! Julie could come down, see the tower of shoes, be sick and tired of it, and say "let's just get it out of here". OR she could be petrified to get rid if it and just add boxes of new shoes. Hoarding is a complicated mental health condition (I have a few others I'm managing (depression, bpd) and for me it's the last one I don't have a handle on yet). Hoarding impulses are mystifying and incredibly frustrating for me as a hoarder. So anyway, tldr, organizing things actually could be a big help to a hoarder. ❤

      They are donating, they are having a yard sale and the owner now has a space where she can do sorting. All of those were addressed during the video.

    Clearly, I am not a shoe person. I have 5 (five) pairs in my rotation (sandals, black flats, brown ankle boots, black ankle boots, and a pair of Converse sneakers). And 2 pairs of formal heels just in case. Lol.

      That sounds pretty much like me. I have more athletic type shoes than I ever have before just because of my cleaning business and rotating through those since I wash pairs in between cleanings, but other than that, you pretty much described my shoes. I have never really understood the whole shoe obsession.🤷‍♀️😊

    Your daughter and your relationship is similar to mine and my son, joking and goofy. Next time if you have an issue with an electrical plug in just try spin kicking it😂 just kidding been watching to much Mack but seriously try pinching the plug in probes a little bit towards each other I have found it helps keep them in to the outlet

    • @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp
      @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp  6 месяцев назад

      I think I would have been better off spin-kicking it.😂 I actually did try adjusting the prongs on the cord and it didn't help. There were several outlets in the house that were like this and I don't know why.🤔 At least the ones in the bathroom I was able to keep stuff plugged into.
